The first episode of The Inspector debuted in theaters alongside the James Bond adventure Thunderball in 1965, and fits perfectly with the whole secret agent craze of the 60s. And though each episode was originally released in theaters, the Inspector cartoons also appeared alongside the Pink Panther on Saturday Morning programming for several years.

The character of The Inspector – clearly based on Inspector Clouseau from the Pink Panther films though his name is never given – bumbles his way through case after case with the aid of his trusty sidekick Deux Deux (pronounced Dudu). Deux Duex is Spanish, but somehow has found his way to the French Surete, and a running gag has The Inspector instructing him that he should say “Oui” instead of “Si” all the time.

The Inspector originally faced off against a host of unique villains, including The Blotch, The Mad Bomber, Captain Clamity, and Two-Faced Harry in a grand total of 34 kid-friendly cartoon shorts. Unfortunately, this DVD will only include half of the series (the other half probably being released seperately in a few months’ time).

The slapstick shorts in this series represent to me some of the very best to come from the DePatie-Freleng studio (along with The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection).

Very highly recommended!

Just to clear up the misleading title of this set, the Pink Panther does not appear in these cartoons. It seems that MGM home video felt that nobody would know who The Inspector was, so they had to tag him as one of the Pink Panther’s friends.

This cartoon series is historically important, produced in the late 1960’s after all but two of the major studios gave up producing new cartoons for the theaters. Friz Freleng (formerly directing for Warner Brothers’ Looney Tunes & Merry Melodies) teamed with David DePatie to form a new Animation studio, Depatie-Freleng, after Warner shut its doors. In an ironic twist Warner then contracted with them to continue producing Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies for theaters!

But around that same time Depatie-Freleng produced an animated title sequence for the first Pink Panther movie. It was so popular that United Artists contracted with them to produce a series of Pink Panther Cartoons. Unlike the title sequence, the Pink Panther was no longer persued by The Inspector.

However, later that year The Inspector got his own theatrical cartoon series, based not on Peter Sellers but on the short, big-nosed character in the title sequences. He was now teamed up with a spanish assistant who joined him in persuing some stylistic villians like a mad bomber who looked like a hairy ink spot, or a three headed black shadow that can take on many forms to conceal itself.

Pat Harrington (who later went on to be the handyman Schneider in ONE DAY AT A TIME) voiced The Inspector, giving a slight impression of Peter Sellers. He was joined by veteran voice actors such as Paul Frees & Larry Storch (Agarn in F TROOP). Animation directors for the old Warner Brothers studio also joined the Depatie-Freleng studios to produce these classic 1960’s cartoons. And the quality of their work shows when comparing these to other cartoons produced at the same time from studios such as Walter Lantz.

The Inspector series was retired in 1969 and sold to NBC television as a part of the Pink Panther show. Laugh tracks were added to these theatrical cartoons which gave them a television feel, in general theatrical cartoons ran on TV without the laugh tracks. The title sections were shortened & given a new music track for the TV show.

This collection gathers the first 17 cartoons of the 34 cartoon series with their original theatrical titles & music intact.

I had heard a lot of bad things and bad reviews about this movie. I was suprised when I watched it that it was as good as it was. I thought Timothy Olyphant did a good job and that the girl who played his love interest was also good and HOT. The guy that plays T-Bag on the TV show Prison Break was also good. I have never played this game but I thought the story was pretty solid. It kind of reminded me of The Bourne Identity as he is a trained super assassin from a place that churns them out and he has flash backs of good and bad things.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hitman! Click Here

Anyway, the action rocked and it was exciting and entertaining beginning to end. It was pretty good and fun to watch.

Yet another game to movie adaptation, but this one has a major difference. It’s actually pretty damn cool.

Timothy Olyphant fits perfectly into the role of Agent 47, an orphan who is taken in and trained by an agency that trains children to be the most stealthy and deadly hitmen in the world. Agent 47 is the best of the best of all the Hitmen raised and trained by “The Organization.” He is called in to perform on a hit on the Russian President Mikhail Belicoff, however the hit is a setup and 47 finds himself on the run from Interpol & The Russian Secret Police.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hitman! Click Here

While on the run, 47 endeavours to get revenge and find the truth about who set him up and why. This unravels a tangled web of lies and deceipt as one by one he kills those who have done him wrong, including those who are also members of “The Organisation.”

During his streak he comes across an unlikely companion in Nika Boronina who we come to see gives 47 emotions and feelings that he’s never encountered before.

This is a really good movie and something that at times keeps so close to the game that you come to think this is a game in itself. Timothy Olyphant plays 47 incredibly and although 47 is conventionally an emotionless character but within the movie we are given emotion that is being held back. That may be a bit of an oxymoron but the way in which Olyphant portrays it is amazing as it’s a character that has all this emotion built up inside but is trying to hold it back.

The action, dialogue and cinematography of this film I found to be incredibly intelligent. It has moments in it that you can identify to the game and there’s one point in particular which the game itself is given a nod. 47 breaks through the window of a hotel room and it cuts to a vision of kids playing the video game hitman.

Overall this was a very, very good film which I have to admit I didn’t really have high hopes for in the beginning. I am glad to say my preconceptions were changed within the first 5 minutes into the movie and I am sure to watch it again.

You should check it out whether you’re a fan of the game or not, it’s still a pretty special piece.

This film has aged really well; the comedy and dialogue is really sharp, the acting is believable and there’s never a dull moment. Instead of going over the story, I want to quote what screenwriting legend, Robert McKee wrote about the film which rings true; “At the crisis, Josh [Tom Hanks] faces irreconcilable goods; an adult life with a fulfilling career and the woman he loves verus a return to adolescence. He makes the mature choice to have his childhood expressing with fine irony that he at last became ‘big’. For he and we sense that the key to maturity is to have had a complete childhood. But becuase life has short-changed so many of us in youth, we live, to one degree or another, in a false sense of maturity. BIG is a very wise film.”

Sure the toys have changed and yes, Billy Idol is tied to the soundtrack but the message still remains the same. This should be required viewing for all families.

This film still contains Tom Hanks best performance in my opinion. Big is an expertly told modern fairy tale that captures perfectly the innocence and the enthusiasm of youth. This movie gets flawless performances from all the actors and actresses involved. It reminds us all of when we were young and Big is a testament to why we should always stay young at heart.

Big is among my favorite films of all-time and I honestly can’t see any reason why someone would dislike this movie. In fact I believe it is the best movie to be made in the 80’s and it’s huge heart will allow Big too stand the test of time.

Sure, there’s not much of a plot here and it’s very short(about 65 min) but it’s very well done for what it is. In my opinion this is what horror movies should be like. All horror movies are stupid, but even moreso when writers try too hard to have a good plot. Plots are not important in horror movies, especially in a b movie such as this. It’s got well done gore and is entertaining to watch. Plus stacy scowley is cute.

A sleazy producer gets an idea for a reality show, he puts five “sexy” girls in a real haunted house and offers them a potential one million dollars if they survive the night.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hell Asylum! Click Here

This is low budget and the acting isn’t always great, but it isn’t all bad. With a budget it could have been a big movie. My big complaint would be that there wasn’t enough story, and it was too fast. The whole thing is 72 minutes long, so there was no opportunity to build up any suspense. Also, it would have been nice if there was a more serious explanation as to why the house was haunted and a better attempt at trying to get rid of the ghosts. A few tweaks of the script and it would have been sweet.

Mushishi is an absolute masterpeice. It’s a fantasy/drama unlike any you’ll ever find, and it’s my favorite anime.

Each episode tells a different story. I thought I would be bothered by this, but I wasn’t. This adaptation is very faithful to the source material.

Mushishi evokes many different emotions while viewing it. Some episodes may have a really nice ending, while others can be really sad. The beautiful background music amplifies these effects.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mushi-shi, Vol. 6! Click Here

The music is very serene. Listening to the OST, something I do everyday, is the best way to relieve stress. It really works wonders for the anime, especially when considering the quality of animation maintained throughout all 26 episodes.

I have yet to see an anime series animated as beautifully as Mushishi is. Everything was so well done, you can tell they spent a lot of time translating this from the manga. The Mushi are reminiscent of the creatures you would find in a Hayao Miyazaki film, the Kodoma of Princess Mononoke perhaps. They have a certain magical aura, a mystifying presence, that makes you want to see more and more of them.

I suggest you buy the DVDs, which come in a very nice package with lots of extras. This is an anime which should be seen by anyone who enjoys anime.

This DVD, the final volume, contains episodes 23-26.

I’ve been seriously watching anime for a couple years now, and of all the series I have watched, this one has been the most gratifying of all. Its tone is almost zen-like, the animation and artwork are beautiful, the episodes are fascinating and disturbing, and I found that as I finished each DVD, I felt uplifted and simply happy to be alive. The series centers around a man who travels Japan helping people who have “mushi trouble”. Mushi are defined as the essence of life itself, which is neutral, but which can cause people all sorts of problems in various situations. Ginko, the main character, seeks to help people and mushi to co-exist peacefully wherever possible. Because the series is episodic in nature, we only slowly learn about the hero, his past, and his personality. The care which the producers put into this series is apparent in each story. I highly recommend this series.

It is probably inevitable that American audiences will compare “Mibu gishi den” (”When the Last Sword is Drawn”) with “The Last Samurai,” in that both films deal the Meiji restoration. This is also a similarity between the two in that this 2003 Japanese film from director Yojiro Takita (”Komikku zasshi nanka iranai,” “Onmyoji”) also is concerned with a character learning the true meaning of being a samurai. The difference is that instead of an American mercenary played by Tom Cruise it is a city samurai, Hajime Saito (Koichi Sato), who learns much from Kanichiro Yoshimura (Kiichi Nakai), who he dismisses at first meeting as a “country” samurai.

Buy,Download, Or Stream When the Last Sword Is Drawn! Click Here

The story here is told mostly in flashback from the perspective of 1899 when Saito, now an old man, brings his ailing grandson to see a doctor. In the home of the doctor there is an old photograph of a samurai that Saito recognizes, and the memories come flooding back to both the old man in the doctor (only the viewer is privy to both). The two samurai first met during the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate, as clans were forced to choose between obedience to the Shogun, who wanted to maintain the old ways, and the Emperor, who favored opening Japan to the rest of the world and modernizing the country. The group to which Saito belong remained loyal to the Shogun, which dooms them as the troops of the Emperor take control of the country.

The civil war is creating a time of famine and poverty in Japan, so Yoshimura has left not only his clan but also his wife and children behind to find work so that he can send money home to his family. Since he is a mercenary Saito and the other samurai see Yoshimura as being dishonorable. When Yoshimura talks with love of the land from which he came, Saito, who cannot conceive of being loyal to a place rather than to a man, decides to kill Yoshimura. But the “country” samurai is too good with a sword and believes that Saito’s attack is just a test. However, the key difference between the two is clearly established: Saito is alive because no one has killed him, while Yoshimura kills because he wants to stay alive.

Buy,Download, Or Stream When the Last Sword Is Drawn! Click Here

It is clear that Yoshimura represents for Takita the personification code of Bushido. Time and time again my Western sensibilities intruded into this film because with his great love for his family and the land from which he comes, I kept expecting Yoshimura to simply go home, but eventually got it through my thick skull that the point here is that he cannot go home, for several reasons. Despite the brief battle and swordplay sequences, “Mibu gishi den” is really a character study and like Saito we come to recognize the true value of the strange samurai from the country, especially when the doctor finishes the tale and provide a sense of closure for the both old man and the viewing audience.

In the 2004 Awards of the Japanese Academy, “Mibu gishi den” won Best Picture with Nakai picking up the awards for Best Actor and Sato for Best Supporting Actor. It was nominated for eight other awards, but apparently in Japan winning the Best Picture award does not carry over into a lot of technical categories. However, I would certainly argue that it is Nakai’s performance that elevates this film above the high levels of sentimentality that take up almost the entire final act. Quite simply his performance was what made me round up in the final analysis on this decidedly different samurai film.

This was the closing film at the 2002 Tokyo International Film Festical. Yoshimura Kanichiro, “the wolf of Mibu”, who toils through the end of the Shogunate era armed only with his sense of justice.

I have owned this movie for some time now and never tire of watching it again to pick out details of the story I had missed before. I find it has a rich mixture of sights and sounds that make it a story worth repeating. The characters are believeable and full of emotion. The action is well played. I’ve found it to be a keeper.

Area 88: Complete Collection is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download Area 88: Complete Collection

Area 88 for those who have yet to experience it in any of its many incarnations is a recent remake of a three-episode 1985 series of the same name, which was itself based on an earlier manga series. Like many, you’re probably wondering what about the premise warrants so much attention. The answer, in its simplest form, is that it presents a clean, tightly focused tale about a pilot betrayed over a woman and the results of this life-changing twist of fate.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Area 88: Complete Collection! Click Here

Yes there’s enough of a story here to keep the plot moving smoothly along but at its core, Area 88 is an action show that borrows some from some of the more memorable moments in big budget films such as Top Gun and Behind Enemy Lines.

As a bit of a fighter aircraft buff myself, I was quite enthralled with the accurate aircraft specs/ renditions featured in the program but make no mistake, fighter plane knowledge isn’t a requisite for enjoying the viewing experience.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Area 88: Complete Collection! Click Here

The story is technically told through the eyes of a photographer who arrives to the mercenary Middle Eastern air base on a bit of an ulterior motive mission again involving the betrayal mentioned above. I’ll refrain from diving too deeply into the plot as most of the fun in the series is following along as the story-layers are unraveled like a proverbial onion.

If you’ve read along this far in the review, hopefully the reason for revisiting this franchise as often as has been done is becoming clearer. The core of the show involves aerial combat scenes and a near constant dose of sheer dog fighting goodness. While advances in animation technology/ computer generated imaging benefit the industry as a whole, there is certainly ample opportunity to show off just how far things have come in Area 88.

Thanks to computer rendering, a great amount of detail has gone into the planes models, their weapons, and the explosions/ crash sequences. The sounds are especially noteworthy as well, almost offsetting the slightly out of place techno score.

ADV Films deserves credit for assembling a voice cast worthy of the Japanese source material. The English dub is just about flawless in dynamics and believability.

Complaints are very few. In fact the most common seem to be the desire to continue onward with a plot that ends fairly abruptly. Twelve 23-minute episodes are all we’re given to begin, develop and conclude the tale. The concept of a full 26-episode run really boggles the mind with what could have potentially been accomplished in terms of character development. As it stands the story is short, sweet, and loaded with action. Viewers who enjoy anime for its methodic building and emphasis on human emotions first and foremost may want to skip Area 88 but everyone else should do themselves a favor by giving the show a try.

Area 88 is available in a Complete Collection (3-disc) set and sold separately across 4 volumes (each containing three episodes). Be cautious when purchasing should you decide to go for the 2008 rendition of the show as the original OVA series from 1985 (from US Manga Corps) often occupies the same shelf space and looks similar in terms of the cover art.

A great anime to see with a powerful meaning to it in a way. Here a guy has a great life meets the girl of his dreams. He ha a promiseing career with good friends.then takes a turn for da worst.really good seris well worth buying

This film stands out because, unlike most action movies, the plot drives it. It’s a portrayal of the life of mercenaries, pawns in the larger global game of power and profits, seen through the experiences of the character played by Christopher Walken. Its specific focus is a coup d’etat in Africa that must be executed by a clandestine force, necessarily commissioned outside the official channels of government. From its earliest stages, all aspects of the mission are rife with mortal danger, a typical reflection of the political forces vying to maintain their own interests. A veteran of several similar assaults, Walken’s character is contacted to organize and implement the project. For him, it should be just another assignment, but this one is different. We see a grizzled, jaded soldier of fortune who is well-trained and honed for the task, but who is nonetheless hoping that this particular job may be his last, providing just enough of a pay-off to enable him to leave the life and pursue a more normal existence. Through the course of events, we therefore get not only a story of conflict but one that is personal as well.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Dogs of War! Click Here

The other film’s strengths are its aversion to stereotypes and straw men. This is not the stuff of Chuck Norris or Sylvester Stallone. We are not subjected to distorted combat scenes where the hero wins the battle with one hand and the enemy is a stupid, sub-human dreg. Rather, we get a sense of the uncertainty of survival, of the brutal reality of life and death under unusual and exceptional circumstances. Within that context, the lines between good and evil, hero and villain, are blurred. Questions concerning loyalty and principle are posed. Who, in fact, is right? Who should win- and does it matter? Can the employer be trusted or even the other men in the unit?

This is as good a movie as there is in this genre. Walken’s performance is compelling, bolstered by an excellent supporting cast(including an unexpectedly good showing from Tom Berenger). Fine direction of vivid action scenes ensures that the tempo does not drag, but balanced against that is suprisingly cutting, insightful and sensitive dialogue. This film thus succeeds at several levels and, while disturbing in tone, still makes for great entertainment.

This is a well crafted story about the otherthrowing of a brutal West African dictatorship through a mercenary run coup d’tat. The film meticulously follows the plot from the reconesance operation to the planning stages through the actual coup. Christopher Walken plays Shannon, the leader of the mercenaries. Walken does solid, but not remarkable work here but he cannot be faulted for that. The film is more concerned with the nuts and bolts of the story and not so with characterization. Shannon’s personal life is dealt with perfunctorily, such as his failed marriage, but is quickly dropped. A major character dies in battle but the audience can’t really feel for him because we never really got to know him. Covert ops and military hardware take precedence. Gotta love them Uzis and Gats. If you are looking for good storytelling with little or no emotional attachment to the characters this is the film for you.
