The King of Pop does it again with HIStory on Film: Vol. 2! Below is a summary of each video/peformance:
TEASER- This commercial for the HIStory album is just as extravagant as one of Michael’s music videos. Featuring Michael himself amidst thousands of soldiers, you can’t go wrong with this. AWESOME!
BILLIE JEAN (Performance from Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, and Forever)- This shocking performance earned Michael Jackson an Emmy nomination and started the Moonwalking craze that lives on today. CLASSIC!
BEAT IT- This video, which was also featured on HIStory: Video Greatest Hits Vol. 1, is a classic from THRILLER. Featuring real gang members and stunning choreography, this video is a must-have!
LIBERIAN GIRL- This video from BAD is VERY rare. I did not know it even existed before I bought this tape. Features cameos from Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Dreyfuss, Danny Glover, and even Bubbles!
SMOOTH CRIMINAL- There are many versions of this music video, but the one on this tape is probably the best. Probably the best choreography of any of Michael’s videos. INDISPENSIBLE!
1995 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS PERFORMANCE- A showstopping performance! This is a 15-minute medly with Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, The Way You Make Me Feel, Scream, Beat It, Black Or White, Billie Jean, Dangerous, Smooth Criminal, and You Are Not Alone. One of the most memorable performances in MTV’s HIStory!
THRILLER- The music video of all music videos. The masterpiece. Zombies… Werewolves… Vincent Price… What more could you ask for? Directed by John Landis(An American Werewolf in London) this video is heralded by many as the greatest music video of all time!
SCREAM (Vocal duet with Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson)- The video that shocked the world in 1995. With a monstrous $7 million budget and great special effects, this video is one of my favorites. The first and only duet with Michael and Janet, this video was worth every cent.
CHILDHOOD (Theme from Free Willy 2)- One of Michael’s most earnest and honest songs. This video makes you wonder what it would be like to be a child for just one more day. GREAT!
YOU ARE NOT ALONE- Another great video, this was the first song ever to debut on the charts at number one. Featuring Lisa Marie Presley and Michael together in the video, this is an instant classic!
EARTH SONG- One of Michael Jackson’s most powerful video and song EVER! This video was actually filmed in four different continents, and the people in the video are not professional actors but actually people of that region. This video is one of my personal favorites, for it is so powerful.
THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT US- A great song and video with awesome percussion. This video was banned from MTV and VH1 because of the contreversy surrounding the lyrics. Directed by Spike Lee.
STRANGER IN MOSCOW- An awesome song with a simple yet great concept video. It is just people walking in the rain, but when you see the video, it is so much more.
BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR (Refugee Camp Mix)- This video shows Michael dancing in a club with friends. Although the video is nothing too special, the song is GREAT! AWESOME!
BRACE YOURSELF: A KALIEDESCOPE OF MICHAEL JACKSON HISTORY- Featured on the first HIStory video, this shows glimpses of Michael in concert and elsewhere.
With this video coupled with HIStory: Video Greatest Hits Vol. 1 you have just about all of Michael Jackson’s best videos and performances. ALL HAIL THE KING OF POP!

The best kept secret on television is Deadwood, a semi-true story of the lawless town in South Dakota that popped up during the gold rush days of the 1800’s. The real Deadwood boasted legendary residents like Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickock. Both figure prominently as characters in the TV series but are far from the only great characters on display.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the series, but never gave it a look. Or perhaps you were warned by others that the language was so profane as to render it unwatchable. True, the series isn’t for anyone under the age of 18, but it must be understood that this semi-historical piece was written to represent the actual dialect and social tenor of the region at that time. Deadwood was a rough place without real law, and gold was on everyone’s mind. All the elements for great drama were there. Greed, corruption, deceipt, innocence, morality (or a lack thereof), hope, hate, fear, addiction, murder, jealousy and love. Deadwood truly represents a kind of sociological study of human evolution within a laissez faire society.

It was clear from episode 1 that the new Deadwood series on HBO was something special. By episode 4, I was certain that Emmy nominations/awards were imminent. The show was largely ignored by the Emmys, likely sufferering from a combination of “newcomer syndrome” and overshadowing by The Sopranos. But make no mistake, it was more than worthy with the actors comprising a splendid balance of the familiar and the unfamiliar. Regardless of fame however, there isn’t an off performance to be found in the season. Nor is there a grossly derivitive one. The characters are all satisfyingly deep, nuanced and often downright quirky.

The writing, as is the case with most HBO original series, was entirley engaging with a character and rhythm all its own. It is to be savored as a fine wine or concerto. Unlike many adult drama series on the “other networks”, Deadwood never loses its momentum. There is no need to manipulate the audience with cheap antics to get them to care week to week. The story, actors and writing take care of that. Each episode flows to the next with amazing fluidity while always maintaining an anticipatory mood.

There is really no need to get into plot points as it would require a review the size of the Deadwood script and would involve spoiling much of the drama that one should experience as purely as possible. Suffice it to say if you enjoy adult themed series such as The Sopranos, you will love Deadwood. Even if you don’t like westerns, it won’t matter. The acting, writing, and plot are just that good. Give it a chance. You won’t be sorry.

This is my nominee for best new drama. This revisionist western will knock your socks off with its fascinating characters and atmosphere. It’s May 1876 former Montana marshal Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and his business partner Sol Star (John Hawkes) open a hardware business in the gold-mining town of Deadwood, South Dakota. Deadwood becomes the crossroads for the famous, infamous and the people they kill. Bullock meets Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine) and has a run in with Gem Saloon owner Al Swearengen (Ian McShane). Swearengen lives up to his name; he’s a man with the foulest mouth one can imagine and a pretty nasty fellow to cross. McShane’s portrayal of Swearengen makes him one of the most complex villans this side of Tony Soprano.

“Deadwood” becomes the nexus for some of the most important figures of the old west creating a great opportunity for storytelling from writer/creator/producer David Milch (”NYPD Blue”). A sprawling, down and dirty revisionist western, the pilot directed by Walter Hill (”Southern Comfort”, “Hard Times”, “The Warriors”) features marvelous performances from Ian McShane, Brad Dourif, Timothy Olyphant, Molly McShane, Keith Carradine and Powers Boothe. Authentic right down to the pig crap, “Deadwood” features the great dialogue, action and storytelling skills we’ve come to expect from Milch, Hill and the other collaborators on this cable TV series. A warning for viewers–you’ll hear a lot of bad words because, well, because Milch feels that folks spoke like that back then.

There may only be 12 episodes included here but they’re all high quality. My only complaint is that the series probably could have been packaged with more episodes per disc making the set less cumbersome. The price is a bit steep for what you’re getting as well but given the quality of the series, packaging and extras, makes this a worthwhile edition to pick up.

Twelve episodes spread over six discs presented in a high quality anamorphic widescreen presentation, ensures that the image quality of the show is kept sharp, clear and with nice, robust rustic colors. The 5.1 sound mix actively surrounds you in the environment of the old west. Since much of this drama is dialogue based the 5.1 atmosphere comes across most effectively when there’s action sequences.

Although this isn’t an extra per se, the designing and packaging of this series makes “Deadwood” special right away. One of the best packaged boxed sets I’ve seen, the box resembles the Star Trek: The Next Generation sets with a sturdy outer box and an accordion fold out holder for the DVDs. It’s big, bulky and personally I like the package that way. Sure, it takes up a lot of space but, hey, it’s better than some of the flimsy packaging we’ve seen lately with these expense sets. While there isn’t any booklet to tell you about the show, each episode has a brief synopsis of each one. There’s also a preview and recap for each and every episode included.

There’s a featurette on the making of the show with a generous helping of interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with Milch and the cast. Featuring vintage photographs of the actual Deadwood. Milch, the cast and crew appear in the featurette as well discussing the intersection of fiction and reality in this 25 minute glimpse into the inspiration for the show. Milch and his collaborators discuss both the attraction of the town and the mythos that it represented. Essentially a promo piece for the series it also provides a nice introduction to the series with a generous helping of clips from the show. Interviews with local historians highlight the featurette on the real Deadwood. Keith Carradine and Milch interview each other for “The Language of the Old West”. There’s a number of commentary tracks with Milch and most of the main cast. The quality of the commentary tracks vary quite a bit but all are informative and interesting.

A terrific series well packaged (but you end up paying for the packaging) with excellent extras, “Deadwood” will keep you involved in the petty dealings of saloon owner Swearengen and his conflicts with the residents and prospectors of the town.

The program on this DVD is basically a retrospective produced in the early 1990s for public television that was originally called “A Bing Crosby Christmas: Just Like the Ones You Used to Know” that was narrated by Gene Kelly and hosted by Bing’s widow, Kathryn Crosby, who since went on to star in the Broadway version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “State Fair.” The program itself features clips from fifteen of Bing’s classic television specials, concentrating on the period from the early 1960s onwards when he included Kathryn and their three children in the programs. For those of us who grew up with these specials — and they were a staple of every holiday season for Baby Boomers — Bing’s family can be seen growing up before our eyes. Yes, it does include the classic duet that Bing recorded with David Bowie of “Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy” that was taped a month before Bing’s sudden death of a heart attack while playing golf in Spain in October of 1977. But it also includes clips with guest stars such as Fred Astaire, Mary Martin, Jackie Gleason, Carol Burnett and Bernadette Peters, among others, and of course, Bing closing as he always did, singing Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas,” heard here across several performances and key changes. The only down side of these clips is that most are heavily narrated over the music itself which limits their appeal over multiple viewings/listenings. The bonus features alone are more than worth the price of the disc, however, including an extended portion of a live Bing Christmas special from the mid-1950s that included Bing and Frank Sinatra having an hilarious, full-of-inside-jokes “sing-off” against one another, including Sinatra taking the Hope role in the title song to “The Road to Morocco” only to have Hope himself show up in protest. Louis Armstrong and Rosemary Clooney also make appearances. There are also some scratchy clips from “Holiday Inn,” including Bing’s first-ever introduction of “White Christmas” by a cozy late-night fire to Marjorie Reynolds, and “Bell’s of St. Mary’s” as well. There is also an amusing early sound short and Bing’s first ever film appearance called “Blue of the Night” after his signature tune of the same name where Bing plays himself meeting a fan who claims to be engaged to him (she only knows his voice from the radio and doesn’t know what he looks like) and includes an hilarious scene where Bing sings her to sleep pretending he has a portable radio and later has to convince an Irish cop (Bud Jamison, who played similar roles in Three Stooges shorts of the 1930s) that he really is Bing. “Well, if you are,” says Jamison, “give us some of that whistling stuff to prove it.” There is also a useful Bing bio and an accurate and thorough discography of every Christmas song Bing recorded during his long and memorable career. All in all, a fun collection for Bing fans as well as fans of Christmas. Come to think of it, isn’t that just about everybody?

This DVD is not worth the money. There is only 1 Christmas song the entire 90 mins. But if you like to see the old timer actors this might be for you.

That a film as good as CLEOPATRA is was created at all under the madness and panic of it’s legendary production is indeed an amazing feat. That CLEOPATRA has been given such loving care in it’s restoration in this DVD of the “Road show” print and the attendant bonus materials is a wondrous gift to those who love this film.
The documentary, “Cleopatra: The Film That Changed Hollywood” is in on it’s own an engrossing and informative two hour movie. For anyone who knows little of the history of CLEOPATRA, or who was not around at the time, this documentary will give them the feeling of what those last days of old Hollywood were like. And therein one can find the reasons why this intimate epic is indeed the wonder that it is. Much thanks must be given to the Mankiewicz family and the producers of the documentary.
The print and the sound of CLEOPATRA seems now to surpass what I recall it to be in its first presentation nearly forty years ago. The depth of the colors and the richness of the shadows are indeed splendid. In it’s present form it is hard to believe this film is as old as it is. The commentary track is like finding the lost treasures of the long dead monarch. For there are wonderful recollections by Martin Landau, Tom and Chris Mankiewicz, and even Jack Brodsky gets to read sections from his book “The Cleopatra Papers”. But I must give special mention to Landau’s part. With his keen eye for the art direction of John DeCur one sees things in the background and along the edges of the scene that one never noticed before. Such lovingly detailed sets and interiors will never be seen again. The costs today are just too prohibitive. Also his insights into what was cut from the film, particularly his and Richard Burton’s contributions in the second act give one the idea of what Mankiewicz was intending. Poor Richard suffered the unkindest cut of all. The presentation of the DVD menus are so clever and exotic and are to be commended in their art direction. At last we now know what is behind the massive 20th Century Fox logo!
The film itself remains what it has always been, a good film that might have been great if only Zanuck had but trusted Joe Mankiewicz’ original vision. In the documentary it is stated that Fox is looking for the missing film, one can only hope that they succeed.
The performances range from excellent to good. Particular praise must go to Rex Harrison, Richard Burton, Martin Landau, Robert Stephens, Andrew Keir, and Roddy McDowall. Lastly in this department there remains Elizabeth Taylor’s performance as Cleopatra. At the films release she got the brickbats and for reasons that had nothing to do with her performance. It is always hard to separate the history of the lady from her film roles. But here in this film is where she became the ELIZABETH TAYLOR she has remained in the mind of the world to this day. In this fact alone she is perfect in the role. She is at once regal and commanding, strong and tender, soft and hard. The contradictions that have always been at the heart of Cleopatra herself, the public enigma wrapped within a mystery. In her performance as written by Mankiewicz she is probably not too far off from the historical Cleopatra.
Ever since Judith Crist gave CLEOPATRA the needle in 1963 and in the act made her name, the public, for the most part, has viewed this film a failure. But today, stripped of the scandal, hype and hysteria of its release in June of ‘63 it is now possible to view CLEOPARTA as the wonderful film that it is. Historically this is an important DVD and I recommend it highly. CLEOPATRA remains as seductive, beautiful, and intelligent as it was in Walter Wanger’s original conception.

Despite the legendary excesses and scandals that went on during the making of this unjustly maligned movie, it has three of the most critical foundation stones any work of this scope needs to succeed:

1). A unified vision or point of view, extending from the development of plot and characters to the physical look of the production itself.

2). A literate and compelling script that could play irrespective of the opulence of its surroundings.

3). Four leading actors who instinctively understand how to work their material, making the seams between performer and character invisbile to the spectator.

#s 1 & 2 were supplied by director / screenwriter Joseph L. Mankiewicz, #3 by Taylor, Burton, Harrison, and McDowell.

This is a film that easily bears repeated viewings, and, again, thanks to Mankiewicz and his actors, functions simultaneously on a variety of levels. For example, there are the love stories:

Caesar & Cleopatra / Antony & Cleopatra.

The tender scenes are written and played almost poetically, but there are also political manouverings going on as each uses the other to attain or augment their power. This is made even more fascinating in that these are obviously intelligent, witty, charming, beautiful, ruthless, and influential people whose calculations shape nations and Empires.

Given all of the above, the movie also looks like the enormous sum it cost, has a brilliant score by Alex North, an accomplished supporting cast (in particular, Martin Landau, Pamela Brown, Hume Cronan, Cesare Danova), and spectacular “set pieces” that though fully integrated into the plot, almost play as “movies within the movie” – Cleopatra’s Entry into Rome, Cleopatra’s Barge & Banquet, the Battle of Actium.

In sum, Mankiewicz and cast succeed in bringing off the big “world stage” themes critical to this genre of historical film. Their greatest achievement however lies in making an audience understand that these ancient archetypes were human beings trying to bear the weight of both history and their emotions.

Well, there are five reasons. The first four are found in the review of the DVD set of all five; here is the last one:

5. Gestalt. Call it what you want, but consider the conceptual continuity of these three movies. 1985 remained the “present” for all the films, right? Even this one and BTTF3, made some years later, preserved 1985 as the fulcrum. Quick quiz: of all the eras depicted, which one was the best: 1885, 1955, 1985 or 2015? Tough question, given that there were at least three distinct 1985s, etc.

But look: even the “best” 1985 was, in significant ways, not as good as 2015. Our predicates, then, are that obstacles can be overcome, the past reinvented as needed, and, most importantly, “the future is what you make it.”

I’ve found no clearer demonstration of a fundamentally optimistic philosophy in any movie I ever saw. Even though these films intentionally avoid sentimentality (all right, you could argue that), they express a relentless optimism that enables characters and, derivately, ourselves, to take charge of our situations, invent new solutions and fulfill Doc Brown’s mandate. Make mistakes, learn from them, experiment, and then move forward. The past does not have to trap you; it is only a platform for a better future.

You cannot leave the movies without feeling more empowered about your own life. And it does not get any better than that.

A film by Robert Zemeckis

“Back to the Future Part III” is the third and concluding chapter to the “Back to the Future” trilogy. For many years this was my least favorite film in the trilogy, but watching it again for the first time in years I have new appreciation for it. “Back to the Future Part III” is a satisfying and worthy end to this trilogy.

At the end of the second movie the DeLorean is struck by lightening (which we already know provides the necessary 1.21 gigawatts of energy required for time travel) and Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) is sent somewhen in time. Marty (Michael J Fox) is stuck in 1955 Hill Valley, but just after Doc and the DeLorean disappears a letter arrives for Marty. The letter is from Doc and was written in 1885. It was left as the post office with the instructions to be delivered on that particular date at that particular time. The letter says that Doc is alive and well in 1885 and under no circumstances is Marty to try to go back and rescue him.

Marty returns to the 1955 Doc Brown and enlists his help to recover the DeLorean which was left in a cave for 70 years. While recovering the DeLorean Marty discovers a tombstone with Doc’s name on it…and the date that Doc died was only a week after he wrote the letter! The tombstone reads “shot in the back by Buford Tannen (Thomas F Wilson) over a matter of $80″. There is no way Marty is going to let this happen, so he puts gas in the DeLorean and travels back in time to 1885 to help Doc. Of course, if it was that simple, we wouldn’t have much of a movie, so complications evolve. The DeLorean ruptures its gas line, so that it leaks gas and can no longer be driven under its own power. Part of the movie is Doc and Marty trying to get the DeLorean back up to 88 miles per hour, but there is also the matter of Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen who still intends to shoot Doc over that matter of eighty dollars…or will history change and will Marty’s name on that tombstone? This final installment also introduces a love interest for Doc Brown in the person of Clara Clayton (Mary Steenburgen), the new school teacher with an interest in science.

This movie is much more of a straight forward action/adventure/comedy (whatever) movie. The time travel serves to get Marty in the past and back to the present, but there isn’t as much playing around with time travel as there is in the second movie. I still think this might be the weakest of the movies, but it is a very fun ride. While this movie will never reach the “classic” status that I feel the first one will, this is a very enjoyable movie and is a fitting end to the trilogy. Good stuff.

Movie Title: Legend
Average customer review:

LEGEND never really found an audience in theatres despite Ridley Scott and Universal’s constant tinkering with the final cut. Seems many movies of this era were victims of audience test screenings, and the desire to give people a commercial product that went down easy — see BRAZIL for a prime example of how studios think (the “love conquers all” version). So LEGEND was severely edited and rescored with a hasty (but often effective score by TANGERINE DREAM). It was short on plot and long on art direction, but sumptuous visuals and an all-out acting job by Tim Curry and make-up artist Rick Bottin made the movie an easy favorite of many fantasy fans. The movie looks stunning, and the story is a universal plunge into archetypes. Nothing wrong with that, it certainly worked for STAR WARS!

This DVD collection gives you two versions of LEGEND — the original director’s cut with over twenty minutes of added footage and the original Goldsmith score; and in addition, you get the original US release. In essence you get two different movies! The moods vary, the characters seem a little different, with whole new speeches and images to enjoy. If you are a fan of the movie or Ridley Scott it’s a MUST-HAVE! This is what DVD dreams are made of. While many bemoan the fact BLADE RUNNER does not come with its 2 versions — the fact is other than the narration and the happy ending, there is not MUCH different. But here we have a case where you can see what happens to a movie as it goes through development HELL. Fascinating stuff, and it comes LOADED with extras.

The only downside is the director’s cut gets the royal treatment of a 5.1 sound mix while the other version gets a 2 channel Dolby mix, and even the video quality seems different with again the director’s cut looking better than the theatrical release. But at last we can see a widescreen version of either cut, and we get a lot of extras that explain some of why the movie is the way it ended up. Beautiful images, two good soundtracks (I like both though the mood changes), and basically strong performances. LEGEND is a waking dream!

As long as unicorns roam the earth evil can never harm the pure of heart, and that is why the prince of Darkness has sent his most foulest goblins out into the very daylight he seeks to destroy forever to cut off the horns of the last two remaining. But when Jack (the forest boy, played by a very young Tom Cruise) takes Lily (a royal princess, played by the beautiful Mia Sara) to see them, she does the forbidden and touches these ancient creatures. Lily soon discovers it was she who unintentionally lured the unicorns into the goblin’s trap; enabling them to shoot the poison stinger into one of the “beasts”, as they call them, with a clear view. She vows to make things right again as the land becomes shrouded in a blanket of snow and tries to protect the last unicorn standing but is too frail to defend even herself. She then is captured, along with the unicorn, and taken back to the great tree where the wicked come to sacrifice. There the prince of Darkness yearns for a companion and tries to make Lily one of them by tempting her with jewels and power while Jack and his new friends Gump, a jealous sprite and some other nymphs, device a plan to save Lily, the unicorn, and the world before it’s covered in eternal shadow.

Legend wasn’t too well received in theaters and was not a favorite among most critics but it has quickly become a cult classic with fantasy lovers like me. Considering the low budget director Ridley Scott was given in order to make this film in the mid-80s, I thought they did a wonderful job in bringing William Hjortsberg’s dark fairytale to life, which was written specifically for the screen. I also felt the entire cast put on remarkable performances – especially Tim Curry who went through hell (pun intended) to look as devilish as he does here…

Within this two-disc set is two versions of the film. One is the director’s cut, as it was intended to be seen, and the other is the U.S. theatrical version, which I personally prefer, as do many others apparently. There are many extended scenes in the director’s cut that were taken out of the U.S. release to trim down the overall running time but I felt the U.S. version simply flowed better. It also features a more dramatic score by Jerry Goldsmith instead of the more emotional score by Tangerine Dream and doesn’t include the closing credits song “Is Your Love Strong Enough?” by Brian Ferry, ending the movie on a more magical note. But still, it was nice to see both versions and to compare the two. There’s also a lot of bonus materials in the limited edition of Legend that many fans will be very grateful for.

In Episode 10, the group splits up to avoid pursuance and fool Nobuseri scouts as they near the village. While Kikuchiyo, Kambei, and Komachi torment Katsushiro with questions about his feelings toward Kirara, Gorobei, Heihachi and Rikichi have to disguise themselves as women when they are suddenly discovered by Nobuseri. Meanwhile, Kyuzo and Shichiroji accompany Kirara as they head through the mountains – but Kirara is still wary of Kyuzo – until he saves her Life.

In Episode 11, the group finally arrives in Kanna Village – but the village appears to have been abandoned. Seized by fear, the villagers have hid, and most are trembling with fear and second thoughts about going against the Nobuseri. Luckily, Kikuchiyo arrives and lures the villagers out, assuring them that if they have faith in the Samurai, they will prevail. Kambei then assesses the situation and inspires the villagers to rise together against the Nobuseri. The Samurai each go about their seperate tasks, preparing the Villagers for battle, as well as changing Kanna Village into a make-shift Fortress. But Farmer Manzo is still determined to sell the Samurai out to the Bandits – and it is up to Kirara and Katsushiro to stop him when he tries to notify a Nobuseri sergeant. Katsushiro must succeed in his first battle – or the Samurai are finished.

In Episode 12, Manzo is brought before the angry village and the disgruntled Heihachi, who knows of Kambei’s ease and mercy. Katsushiro is still in shock from his first taste of combat – but with a sharpened sword and strong words from Kambei, his resolve is strengthened. Just as the alliance between the Villagers and Samurai is about to be broken by the conflict over Manzo’s guilt, Kikuchiyo appears yet again to save the day. With an emotional speech defending Manzo, Kikuchiyo reasons that Samurai are at fault for making Farmers desperate and hungry – finally revealing to the group (indirectly) that he was once a farmer, before he became fully-mechanized and became a Samurai. Finally achieving Kambei’s approval, the group is finally complete at Seven. But the fight is long from over – the Bandits are growing restless, and the Village will soon be harvesting their rice. But with their alliance secure, the Farmers present a battle flag to the Samurai – and the group prepares themselves for the first of many battles to come.

My Review: Although not really comparable to Kurosawa’s masterpiece, this epic re-telling continues to excite and dazzle. This colorful and beautifully detailed work of art brings Kurosawa’s message and inspiring story to the 21st Century. If you’re looking for an identical clone to Kurosawa’s original, you’ll be disappointed, but most likely just as entertained.

2008 seems to be the year for Chinese epic dramas. “An Empress and the Warriors” was released before the “Romance of Three Kingdoms” related films by Daniel Lee (Three Kingdoms) and John Woo (Red Cliff). The film is helmed by Tony Ching Siu Tang (Naked Weapon) and if you are familiar with this director’s past works, you’ll know that he is a good action director. However, I do believe the skill of good storytelling eludes him–”An Empress and the Warriors” is pure brainless fun, with decent production values and may well be a good “date” movie.

After the kingdom of Yan is mortally wounded after a battle with the Zhao army, the king chooses to leave command to an orphan, named Muyong Xuehu (Donnie Yen) who is not related to the royal family. This bold decision raises the ire of Hu Ban (Guo Xiao-Dong), the king’s nephew who is ready and willing to lead. Yan Feier (Kelly Chen) is the king’s daughter and was bestowed the sacred “Swallow sword” (I know!) as her father’s dying wish, to give to Muyong. However, when the time came to announce Muyong’s promotion, Hu Ban and Diao Erbao renounces the claim saying that the king should not be one with no royal blood in his veins. To keep the peace and avoid mutiny, Feier seizes power with Muyong’s support–and undergoes military training to prove her worthiness to lead. Hu Ban plots to discredit the princess before she is crowned as the empress, assassination is even an option –a power struggle threatens to weaken the foundations of the Yan Kingdom.

I’m not sure how to begin, the film’s plot is so flimsy and uninspired. It abandons the potentials of a conspiracy during a period when leadership is important in favor of a budding romance between Feier and Duan (played by Leon Lai) which makes rather fun but definitely predictable and boring. The character of Feier does look like a princess but the way she is portrayed by the script is rather silly and lacks credibility. Kelly Chen does look like a beautiful princess, but the kind that would act in a disney movie. The script by James Yuen Sai-sang is also very light, the threat of destruction is overshadowed by romance? I’m not sure, Feier and Muyong kept on referring to her as the “one to unite the country” but just what is this “Yan Kingdom”? All that came to view are buildings and shacks and aside from the ninjas and Duan, no common folk is visible. I do feel that the war backdrop is just meant as a plot device to gain sympathy and to set up the scenes of overdone sentimentality.

While I also disliked its use of the usual histrionics, the film does have some charm. However, unbelievable and stylish Kelly Chen’s training sequences with Donnie Yen, it has somewhat diverting. However, the film abandons this device rather quickly and falls to the usual romantic gimmicks. The romance between Duan and Feier may be nice to the female species but it just kills the film’s overall impact. I thought I was in a dumb teen flick, and while the screenplay has the usual elements of loyalty, sacrifice, duty, compassion and betrayal, it never executed them well enough and opted for a perfunctory romance to add complications to its premise of a “threatened kingdom”. The storyline just wasn’t interesting and lacked inspiration, the film isn’t compelling and interesting.

The acting for the most part is a mixed bag. Kelly Chen is very pretty and charismatic but I had some reservations as to how convincing she was as a strong-willed princess. I would give her the benefit of a doubt since the script is so dry that it gave her so little to work with. Her acting is very cute and charming, her interactions with the tree-dwelling Duan may appeal to the female audience, but it suffers from a lack of consistency that doesn’t fit into the film’s plot. The film does have huge continuity issues and feels undercooked. Donnie Yen will be Donnie Yen–complete with his overacting.

Now as for the action sequences, there are quite a good number of them. Director Tony Ching knows his stuff when shooting action sequences. He uses multiple camera angles and the moves are visually impressive. The ninja-like assassins and the chase sequences were very cool. The assault in the tree-home of Duan is fast-paced and stylish, complete with cool close-ups with attitude. The battle scenes were decent but not in the same caliber as other Chinese epics of this kind. There is some blood as folks are stabbed and impaled in some very sensitive places. The action has a lot of posturing with attitude complete with the wind blowing strands of hair. Donnie Yen is a very showy actor but none can deny that he does have a presence as a martial artist. Yen is complete with bone-crushing machismo as he fights hundreds of Hu Ban’s foot soldiers in the final act. Truly exaggerated and unrealistic appeal for an epic but good enough for an action movie.

So what is the final verdict? Well, the usual stereotypical Hong Kong “cuteness” just would never match the tone and atmosphere of Mainland China’s Epic Wuxia films. You can tell that the film should have a more serious tone and to incorporate a cute romance into its premise just bores the heck out of me. The action choreography does prove diverting and all it all the film is just a practice of a mainstream stylish action flick. The leads are definitely photogenic and the visuals were decent; this film is definitely geared to fans of these performers who would watch anything they appear in. “An Empress and the Warriors” is just another of those stupid commercial flicks that should be watched with VERY low expectations. It is watchable for 90 minutes but definitely a forgettable experience; it just fails in comparison to the best China has to offer.

Rental [2 ½ Stars]

This movie is the exact reason I’ve stopped watching most everything out of Hollywood. This movie makes all of the so called “blockbusters” or “epics” look like high school class projects made by slackers and stoners. If you’ve never seen Hong Kong cinema, or think that all Chinese movies are just Kung Fu flicks with bad dubbing, you are in for an amazing surprise. This is better than Crouching Tiger, House of Flying Daggers, or even Hero. Watch this movie, then buy it.

I just received and viewed this two disc set from Amazon. It is a perfect starting point for anyone interested in Quigong and its health benefits.

There are two discs. The first is a set of basic Quigong excercises. Each excercise is its own chapter on the DVD so it is easy to locate a specific exercise. You can then repeat your viewing of each individual exercise instead of having to view the entire set in serial order to get to the exercise you want to learn. It makes it easy to watch each exercise and view it many times so that you can easily learn to do it yourself.

The second disc is an award winning documentary (aired on PBS) about Quiqong. The author, Francesco Garripoli, had a background in Western Medicine. He sold all of his belongings and travelled around China in search of its ancient healing mysteries. He visited such arcane places as the Shao Lin temple in China which is the Taoist origin of Quigong (Kung Fu or White Crane Chi Kung). The interviews are succinct, yet, fascinating. The imagry is an important record of China in transition. The documentation of Quigong, and, its effects on China and the Western World, emphasizes not only its many benefits to society (as an alternative system of health care), but, also the freedom it bestows on individuals wiling to empower themselves with Quiqong to take responsibilities for their own health.

I have practiced Quigong for about five years. I needed this DVD for review as I will soon be instructing beginners. This is not only a great DVD for beginners, it is also a great DVD for those needing review of the basic 18 exercises. It includes Shao Lin self-massage techniques which form a basis for personal health maintenance in Quiqong. It is also an excellent resource tool for instructors as it shows Francesco and Diasy Lee almost flawlessly performing the exercises in a way that makes it easy for beginners to learn.

I will recommend this DVD for my class in lieu of a texbook.

This is one of my favorite exercise videos. Not only is it an effective video for an enjoyable work out, it also works well in portions for a warm-up or cool down to other workouts. I first learned to coordinate breath and movement from this video. I use the self-massage techniques daily (usually in the shower). I also incorporate the exercises taught in the video in my other workouts. The production quality is excellent and the video is shot in the mountains of colorado giving a very pleasant background to view during the workout. Negatives – none.

I first saw this film when it came out and was surprised, if not shocked, that a film could be made about the importance of culture (to everyone; but in particular to Native Americans) and the attempts of tribes to locate children “stolen” from their homes and “repatriate” them back into their families and communities. In 1976, a US Congressional report found that one out of two (50%) Native American children were either adopted into, or placed in the “foster” care of, Non-Native American families. This “process” was, additionally, causing problems for many Reservation/Reserve communities, because as these children became of age they were aimlessly searching for their “real” families. In 1978, the “Indian Child Welfare Act” was approved by Congress in an attempt to stem the problems. However, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) was basically opposed to the law and failed to adequately enforce the law. None-the-less, by the late 1980s many tribes were actively seeking ways to help these children through actions that have come to be called “repatriation”: re-uniting children with family members on the reservation/reserve and attempting to teach them of their traditional culture. This process also derived from the desire to help so called “problem” children; children that were unwanted and who hated themselves, and were often in trouble.

The Canadian government, seemingly slower at doing things, actually worked out a system that was somewhat more proactive in the “repatriation” process. “Spirit Rider,” then, is a Canadian made for television movie, that depicts these efforts on one of the Ojibwa (Chippewa here in the US) reserves in Manitoba to help tribal members.

Given the budget, the topic, and the reality of made for television movies, “Spirit Rider” is a bold, beautiful film, deserving of far greater recognition than it has received–regardless of one’s political position on “repatriation.” Yes, there are some generalizations that are injected into the story, but they do not overwhelm the viewer. My sole problem with the film is that it (the DVD in particular) relies upon the subsequent careers of Graham Greene and Adam Beach by advertising them as the stars of the film. The true stars of the film are: 1) Michelle St. John, who plays Camilla St. Claire, a young Ojibwa girl raised on the Reserve that wishes to help Jesse “repatriate”; 2) Herbie Barnes, who plays the central character, Jesse Three Bears, a young boy raised in foster homes and who wants nothing to do with the Reserve or “repatriation;” 3) Tom Jackson, who plays Albert St. Clair, Camilla’s father, a pragmatic man attempting to run the local store, while being supportive of his “traditional culture;” 4) Tantoo Cardinal, who plays Marilyn St.Claire, Camilla’s mother, a school teacher, and local repatriation project coordinator; and 5) Gordon Tootoosis, portraying Joe Moon, Jesse’s grandfather who has been in prison and had problems with drinking, but was raised in Ojibwa cultural traditions (including speaking Ojibwa as his first language, and is now seen as a resource of cultural knowledge).

Please do not take this to be a diminishing of Greene’s and Beach’s performances–they are wonderful–but an acknowledgment that they are not the “stars” of the movie.

This is a wonderful movie for everyone, and I highly recommend it.

Please Note: If this review was not helpful to you, I would appreciate learning the reason(s) so I can improve my reviews. My goal is to provide help to potential buyers, not get into any arguments. So, if you only disagree with my opinion, could you please say so in the comments and not indicate that the review was not helpful. Thanks.

This was a wonderful movie. True to life, as native americans are tossed into our messy society, they can get lost. Their souls misunderstood and in short, they lose their way for a time. This young boy is no exception to the lessons one has to learn growing up and apart from his heritage. Being under the advisement of an elder, one has the promise to regain his or her confidence in the old way, and has the hope of getting back on the right road.

This movie is a good example to all who are at that age where trying to gain “independence” is more important then the consequences when they disconnect. We all are in this life together, like a web weaved so gently. Sooner or later we all come to our own conclusions, but only one truth. We are all connected.

Any movie with Graham Greene in it always proves to me to be a winner..

Thank you
