But first, a quick and honest review: One of the best films I’ve ever seen – mysterious, sexy, tragic, surreal, horrifying, hilarious, and well worth your money. People will tell you it is incomprehensible or meaningless, but they are wrong. See for yourself. Now.

OK, and now the clues:

CLUE 1: Pay special attention to the colors of the bedsheets and pillow we see very early in the film, just after the jitterbug scene fades out. We will see this bed again at a key moment, two hours later in the film. There is no way to overstate the significance of this simple clue.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mulholland Drive! Click Here

CLUE 2: A pair of brief and virtually identical scenes bookend the Winkie’s scene with Dan, Herb, and the bum. These two quick frame shots tell us something very important about the nature of the beguiling Winkie’s sequence.

CLUE 3: A good deal of information can be gleaned from the succession of phone calls made shortly after Rita’s disappearance. There are many avenues to explore here, but don’t overlook this brief sequence. For instance, why do you think that first call was initially made? What sort of pattern can we see from the first call to the last? And where might that last call have been made to?

CLUE 4: The message on the answering machine when Betty and Rita call Diane Selwyn at her Sierra Bonita residence. Whose voice do we hear on the answering machine? Do we ever hear this message again? If so, when? And what light does all this cast on the mystery of the dead woman whom Betty and Rita find at Diane Selwyn’s Sierra Bonita apartment?

CLUE 5: Camilla Rhodes briefly speaks in Spanish to Adam at their dinner party on Mulholland Dr. What is she saying? Who is she talking about? What is Adam’s reaction? Lynch packs in a lot of information very quickly here.

CLUE 6: At the dinner party, a mysterious blonde kisses Camilla Rhodes on the lips when Adam isn’t looking. Why does this kiss distress Diane so profoundly? What does it reveal?

CLUE 7: Dan makes a second appearance at Winkie’s, late in the film, when Diane and Joe are arranging to have Camilla Rhodes murdered. Do you see how Dan fits into the plot here? Do you understand why Lynch included him in this later scene? Give you a hint: it has to do with something stupid Diane does while cutting her deal with Joe. Very few people ever seem to make the necessary connection here.

CLUE 8: Joe the hitman laughs at Diane when she asks him what his blue key opens. This is the key that Joe will leave for Diane after the execution of Camilla Rhodes is carried through. Anyways, why did Lynch include this seemingly pointless scene with Joe mocking Diane? Big hint: it explains the very next scene (one of the most widely misunderstood scenes in the entire film) with the bum behind Winkie’s. And have you ever wondered whose perspective (POV) we are watching this latter scene from?

CLUE 9: The gesticulating old couple at the end of the film horrify Diane; they appear to symbolize something unspeakably painful to her. Pay special attention to the sounds (yes, the sounds!) we hear as the tiny oldsters crawl under Di’s door to torment her. What might these sounds tell us about what the old couple represent to Diane? And is there any significance to the specific room where they ultimately corner Diane in?

CLUE 10: And finally, something is rather peculiar – even incongruous – about the very last scene with the Blue Haired Lady at Club Silencio. What might this apparent incongruity tell us about the nature of this woman, the club, and the entire story of MULHOLLAND DR. itself?

Also, is this a familiar paradox we’ve seen at the end of other Lynch mind-benders like ERASERHEAD, the TWIN PEAKS television series, TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME, LOST HIGHWAY, and INLAND EMPIRE? There is a very definite pattern here, so what do you think Lynch is trying to tell us?

I’ll eventually post the complete answers to these clues and questions in the reply thread.

In the meantime, good luck…and enjoy.

When an Italian housewife Rosalba (Licia Maglietta) suddenly finds herself stranded, she realizes that perhaps she is not as appreciated by her family as she would like to be. When they finally call to ask where she is, she can’t believe they didn’t even check to see if she was on the bus before they left. Feeling adventurous and a little resentful, she decides to hitch a ride home, but ends up in Venice. With little money to spare, she manages to survive for a few days with hopes of getting a job and finding a place to stay.

After finding a job in a florist shop and moving in with a waiter named Fernando (who is just about to kill himself it seems), she meets Grazia who bursts into her life asking her to help her with a plumbing disaster.

For some reason Rosalba is swept away in this new life and keeps telling her family she will be back soon, yet something strange power seems to overtake her and she decides she too needs a vacation, albeit a working vacation. She spends her time working in the florist shop, reading books in the evening and eating breakfast prepared by Fernando. He also leaves her a note each morning, which is quite romantic even though, technically, she is just his house guest.

Once Rosalba’s husband starts to notice that things are not getting done around his house, he hires Costantino (Giuseppe Battiston) as his private detective. This is when it become more of a comedy of sorts as Costantino is really a plumber who is determined to find Rosalba and return her to her husband.

An enjoyable escape that really keeps

your full attention. Licia Maglietta is

pure magic.

~The Rebecca Review

I found this movie to be absolutely charming and left the theatre with a smile on my face. Licia Maglietta was marvelous as the 40-something lovely lady who decides to take the other fork in the road and starts a new life in Venice. Tired of being under-appreciated and verbally abused by her boorish husband and preoccupied sons, Rosalba (Licia) decides to live for herself for a change and then becomes the catalyst that magically causes others to change around her — the suicidal landlord/restauranteer, the aging florest employer who is a former anarchist, the lady neighbor down and hall, and even the comical plumber/detective sent in pursuit by her husband.

This film is funny, poignant, heart-warming, and charming. The entire cast is truly memorable; the small vignettes of Rosalba’s dreams are somewhat jarring in their presentation – but once you become acclimated to their random arrival they add a bit of mystery to the film that is somewhat resolved at the end.

This is a DVD that I will buy upon release for sure.

Ok before I start, let me clarify something: Unlike the reviewers before me, I have actually SEEN this movie, so my review is not based on the graphic novel of which the movie is based, nor what the movie might be like based on who’s behind the making of it. I HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE. Now that thats out the way, onto the good stuff.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Superman/Batman: Public Enemies! Click Here

I know a lot of Batman, Superman, and Batman/Superman fans were holding their breath on this one. With all classic the DC Comic character movies coming out lately (some of them not as good as others) it was reasonable to assume that “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” the movie could have gone either way. Well good thing for the loyal fan base, this was definitely a hit. I can say I am more then pleased with how this came out, and I have every intention of buying this DVD and watching it again the day it comes home with me.

One thing is abundantly clear when watching this movie: WB Entertainment, and more importantly, DC Comics actually LISTENS to their fans. One of my (and others) biggest fears in this was that we were going to be hearing some sub-par voice acting for the main characters involved, i.e. Superman, Batman, and Lex Luthor. As with past offerings from WB Entertainment (”Superman: Doomsday” for example) we got some weak casting for the voices of Lex and Sups. That alone detracts greatly from the overall enjoyment of the movie. With Public Enemies however, we have the best voices ever cast for the starring 3 roles: Tim Daily as Superman, Kevin Conroy as Batman, and Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor. For those who could give two flips about these guys, they are the same voices from the popular shows Justice League Unlimited, Batman The Animated Series, and Superman the Animated Series.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Superman/Batman: Public Enemies! Click Here

On top of superb voice acting, the animation is crisp, sharp and just plain beautiful. Again, faithful to fan feedback, the artists from Justice League Unlimited seem to have had their hands in this project, because the art is pretty much the same (which is by no means a bad thing), and it looks great. Almost straight from the comic.

Speaking of which, as far as the story goes, keep in mind while watching this that its an adaptation to the comic. That being said however, the movie stays remarkably faithful to the story told in the comic. Minus a few altered frames, scenes and situations, its like reading the comic all over again, except with no imagination needed to enjoy it. The story in general is a very good one, highlighting Batman and Superman’s friendship and giving you a glimpse into how deep it really goes. Granted, you get more of that in the comic then you do in the movie, but the movie compensates for the lack of inner dialogue with good script writing, full of the humorous exchanges between Sups and Bats and emotional moments and outburst we know and love from our favorite caped heroes.

This is a great movie, and you don’t have to have read the comic first in order to enjoy it. Even the review value is moderately high, I can and WILL be watching this again as soon as I can, and some more times after that. This is worth price, grab it and enjoy a motion picture work of art.

Peace

So I watched Superman/Batman:Public Enemies twice in one day after I got it. And I will keep this review short as most of the main points have been hit by the people who reveiewed this already (at least the ones that waited till it came out). So here’s my break down and the end will be final comments.

STORY:

It was adpated from Jeph Loeb’s first arc on the ongoing comic. Love it or hate it, but it was a very faithful adaptation, streamlining something that was basically a set up for the subsequent arcs as well as Infinite Crisis. It was silly, and balls to the wall, and the only gripe I had was not explaining why the Robot was a better choice than Luthor’s missles (Answer, robot was made of Metallo, not the guy, the alloy.) But hey all and all I liked what they did.

Characters (voice and portrayal):

WHOA! Okay I read the comics and almost forgot the laundry list of vilains who come out the cracks for the bounty. Batman and Superman were pitch perfect and their banter was great after seeing them so serious with each other all the time in Justice League and JLU. Tim Daly returning for Superman was great to have, though I’m one of the few that feel George Newburn’s performance as the character is just as good. Kevin Conroy and Clancy Brown however are the quintessential Batman and Lex Luthor respectively. Props to getting CCH Pounder to return as Amanda Waller even if the charatcer model looked horrendous. Lastly the supporting charatcers were great. However I wonder why so much fuss was made about LeVar “Reading Geordi LeForge’s Rainbow” Burton as Black Lightning when he had one line. Killer Frost was a throwaway villain that had more to say. *Sigh* Wasted talent.

ART AND ANIMATION:

Again based on the source material, the art style took a muscular turn and was fully mimicing Ed McGuiness’ style where every male looks like a “Masters of the Uninverse” figure. I personally love his style and always though it would translate well to the screen. I was mostly right. They made Superman look too young, and I think it’s because of the eyes. McGuiness does the squinty look better than most, and we see this in Captain Marvel’s design, and in the comics Superman has the same look sometimes. That plus the cheekbone line makes him look a bit older. Well probably out of fear of backlash (last time they put lines on his face people said he looked too old, and in “Doomsday” he looked even older)they elft those lines out and he looks too young. Everyone else in my opinion looked fine. Okay Powergirl’s eyes bugged me too but I was distracted by something else.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I liked it. It was a great action flick, and didn’t need too much character development. It’s Superman and Batman, if you don;t know who they are why are you even picking up te movie. It’s a buddy flick with wall to wall action. My biggest issue is it felt rushed. At 67 minutes it’s like 15 minutes shorter than previous releases and could have really benefitted from them. That said if you like the characters and you like action this is worth it.

AFTERTHOUGHT:

The preview for the next upcoming animated feature, Jusitce League: Crisis on Two Earths was great. Yes I know after Public Enemies going back to new voices will suck but they got some good ones. Mark Harmon makes a pretty good Superman, I’m on the fence for Billy Baldwin as Batman (needs to be grittier), James Woods does an amazingly devious and twisted Owlman, and Gena Torres was great as SuperWoman. Hope you enjoy!

After seeing this movie for the first time since its 3D release in 1953, it makes one wonder why MGM insists on holding up “Singin’ in the Rain” (a great treat in itself) as its best musical. KISS ME KATE is simply amazing — tight, funny, fast, colorful, full of the dry wit and wisdom of Cole Porter, and gloriously “musical”. To the crew’s credit, many lines are straight from Shakespeare’s original and the cast’s readings are as adroit as any from Old Vic, anywhere, any time. Hermes Pan’s and Bob Fosse’s dance numbers are so sizzling good you can’t take your eyes off the performance. It’s a must-have for dance fans. For comedy fans, the offstage antics that mirror the onstage situations are a fiendishly clever conceit. Only one regret: the original 3D photography was terrific, with perhaps the most brilliant color work of 50’s vintage. It’s a bit subdued in modern prints. But don’t let that deter you from enjoying this lively, literate, nearly perfect gem. Others have mentioned some of the more famous musical bits, but pay attention to Howard Keel’s brilliant comedic reading of “The Life That Once I Led” (which drew gleeful applause when I saw it in a New York cinema recently), and Miss Grayson’s rendition of “I Hate Men”, copied by every lady who’s tried it since 1953. Ann Miller’s dance numbers are easily her very best work, by far — and her “Too Darn Hot” was, at the time, almost too darn hot. Add veteran George Sindey’s directorial expertise (The Harvey Girls, Scaramouche, etc.) and Shakespeare’s own genius, and this becomes *THE* show for people who say they don’t like musicals!

“Kiss Me Kate” is Cole Porter’s charming update of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”. It stars Kathryn Grayson as Lily Vanessi, a hyper-sensative diva of the stage who stars opposite her ex-husband (Howard Keel) and his new lover (Ann Miller). On their way to a hit show, the three repeatedly bump heads and egos, ultimately finding true love. Porter’s score for this musical is perhaps his finest, with such standards as “From This Moment On”, “Wunderbar” and the title track. “A” list performances throughout make “Kiss Me Kate” a real show stopper.
Unfortunately the same can’t be said for Warner Home Video’s dull looking transfer. Colors are muted, at time appearing bleached or, at the very least, weak. The same is true of the picture’s contrast and black levels. There is a haze that plagues the picture quality throughout and adds to its overly soft characteristic.
Now, about that – the visual characteristic is generally soft looking throughout (most likely the result of over use of noise reduction equipment used to master the DVD). On a 32 inch television screen the picture will merely appear generally soft. On a 65 inch monitor it looks down right blurry and at times incredibly out of focus.
I am really at a loss to explain why this movie looks this bad. Owning the laserdisc and, doing a side by side comparison, I can report that the laserdisc actually surpasses this DVD in all of the above mentioned catagories. Of course, no laserdisc can hold a candle to DVD, in its superior resolution capabilities, and this DVD is no exception. There is no edge enhancement, aliasing or fine detail shimmering to speak of. This movie has been remixed to 5.1 surround. It’s generally good, only suggesting a strident characteristic during brief interludes of dialogue or effects. The musical score is well represented.
Extras: Another all too short featurette on Cole Porter and the making of this movie – this one hosted by Ann Miller, but also featuring snippets from Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, Tommy Rall and James Whitmore. A theatrical trailer and isolated music track are also worthy of mention.
Bottom Line: In light of Warner’s usually pristine efforts on DVD this transfer is a big disappointment and NOT recommended.

I have been a fan of Dragonball for years. I have the anime from Dragonball to Dragonball GT. But after seeing this so called movie I felt apart of my childhood destoryed within a hour and 30 minutes. So where do I begin? Well first, the Story was a mess there was little to nothing about Dragonball in it, and the pace felt rushed. There was no time for any plot development, or character development. Basically You meet Goku, then Bulma, Roshi, Yamacha and then final battle. So you can’t get to know the characters, and understand why they are on this quest to collect all 7 Dragonballs before Piccolo. Also, it felt Fox was using other material from other famous movies and cartoon shows. Films like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, ans some materical from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Plus the movie never explain som important factors, for example, how does Piccolo escape his imprisonment, how does he hook up with Mai, How can Mai shape shift, Why does Piccolo need the Dragonball and so on. Second problem with this movie is the actors. Poorly casted, and they poorly portray their characters. For example; Justin Chatwin makes Goku sound and act like Robbie (played by Chatwin) in War of the Worlds. He does want to take on this mission to save the world, complains all the time and tries to hit on girls. Please if you have see the manga or anime you know Goku isn’t like that at all. He stand for good and justice and all the heroic stuff; many Main characters stand for. Thrid, the speical effects look like some thing for the late 80s or early 90s. I can tell you used guide wires and the Kai or engery waves looked fake. I mean come on Look at Iron Man when Tony shots the glass in his lab they looked more realist then what you see in this movie. To rap this review up after watching Dragonball Evolution you don’t feel they put any effort in this movie, they don’t want to please the fans, or get people who don’t know what Dragonball is into the series, no Fox did it to make a qucik Buck. So I say Skip It.

Being unfamiliar with the graphic novels, anime, or video games that have made the Dragonball saga a world-wide sensation, I viewed “Dragonball: Evolution” with an open mind, hoping to see the kind of frenetic martial arts, magic, and humor I had enjoyed in “Mortal Kombat”, a few years back. Well…”Mortal Kombat” this ain’t, and despite the presence of legendary “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” star, Chow Yun-Fat (who must have needed the paycheck), I can’t recommend this turkey to anyone over the age of 4!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dragonball: Evolution! Click Here

The plot is confusing; thousands (or 2,000) years ago, an insane demon lord, Piccolo (if somebody named me that, I’d be pretty mad, too), and his evil right-hand demon, Ozaru, nearly destroyed the world, until he was bound within the earth by seven sorcerors who gave their lives creating the mystical Dragonball orbs that focused their energies. Now, with a ‘blood moon’ total solar eclipse approaching, Piccolo (an unrecognizable James Marsters) is somehow free (how he accomplished that isn’t explained), and gathering up the Dragonballs (which, together, according to legend, will allow the possessor the fulfillment of one ‘perfect’ wish). He plans to use it to release Ozaru, and finish what he started, before (uh, if any wish would be granted, why not simply WISH the job to be finished?)

Meanwhile, in true “Karate Kid” fashion, young Goku (Justin Chatwin) is being trained by his Asian grandfather (Randall Duk Kim) martial arts, and harnassing The Force (oops, I mean, his Ki). Goku’s past is unknown to him (to be revealed on his 18th birthday), and to celebrate the birthday, Grandpa gives him a Dragonball (which flashes images of Ozaru to him). Of course, Goku cannot display his formidable skills to his high school classmates (even the hot Asian girl he secretly likes, Chi Chi, played by pretty Jamie Chung). With the violent death of the old man, Goku learns of Piccolo’s quest, and races to gather all the Dragonballs, himself, joined by greedy Bulma (Emmy Rossum, who must have needed the paycheck, also), a thief, Yamcha (Joon Park), and happy-go-lucky Master, Roshi (Chow Yun-Fat). The story goes downhill, from here…First the Dragonballs are all-important, then they’re not, then Chi Chi is revealed as a martial arts expert, who isn’t very formidible, then (with very unimpressive CGI), Goku’s ’secret’ is revealed, but it turns out IT isn’t that essential, anyway. The story keeps building to less-than-overwhelming climaxes, with a finale that had me wondering why I’d stuck with the film so long!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dragonball: Evolution! Click Here

The Special Features are so-so (the gag reel is funny, an interview with Justin Chatwin doesn’t really provide much more insight than a Google search, and a ‘Making of’ featurette of the Chi Chi vs. Chi Chi fight scene is informative, although the scene isn’t the lynchpin of the movie that it is implied as).

“Dragonball: Evolution” is a poor movie…skip it, you won’t be missing anything!

CSI Season 7 was an absolute masterpiece. The plots were tight. The subplots even tighter (especially the dynamic of Greg killing a young man in self defense, the emergence of Hodges as an unsung hero, the addition of the ultra-talented Liz Vassey to the cast, the chemistry between Catherine/Keppler and Grissom/Sara.) The miniature killer theme is right up the alley with Hitchcock’s finest, and the acting performances put this CSI above all other CSI and Law & Order shows. Every single episode during season seven was done with the trademark of Bruckheimer and Zuiker’s unyielding excellence and class. It was impossible to take your eyes off of the screen, whether you are wondering what the miniature killer will do next, or watch Marg Helgenberger give her best career performance in the episode “Leaving Las Vegas,” or the lab techs come within an eyelash of solving the riddle of the miniature killer in “Lab Rats.” For fans of this show, thinking back through the episodes, it is just amazing places season seven took us, and the cliffhanger that will lead us all into season 8 serves as only a small slice of the tasty treats that this show is capable of offering. After all these episodes, it never gets stale or contrived. Every now and then, a show comes along that defines a generation and a genre, much like Seinfeld did for sitcoms during its run, and Star Trek and Twilight Zone did nearly half a century ago for sci-fi/horror. This show is one for the ages. Pick up this DVD. Push play, and let this cast take you for one unforgettable ride!

The seventh season of the smash hit, original C.S.I. found the show still going strong, as opposed to when many network hits fizzle out by this time in their life. The season opens with Grissom (William Petersen) and Sara (Jorja Fox) keeping their relationship secret as a mystery unfolds regarding a killer who leaves behind exact, incredibly detailed, miniature replicas of the crime scene. As the rest of the season unfolds, Greg (Eric Szmanda) finds himself in a predicament he never foresaw, Catherine (Marg Helgenberger) finds herself playing the role of victim, and when Grissom goes out of town, a shady transfered cop named Keppler (the excellent Liev Schreiber) arrives on the scene; culminating in one of the best storyarcs the series has ever seen. As the season winds to a close, the CSI’s close in on the miniature killer, and the season concludes with one of their lives in jeopardy, and the others desperate to make things right. Undoubtedly one of the best seasons of the show in it’s entire run, the original (and best) C.S.I. remains one of the best crime dramas to ever grace prime time network TV, and the seventh season is a prime example why.

Okay…this is an improvement over the previous box set…as the films feature a greatly improved picture and sound options..BUT..the foreign sets available though amazon.co.uk have great packaging…very cool book and documentaries NOT included in this set…heck there are NONE on this set. I also note that while the menus look identical to the foreign set (I guess you can tell I own both?)…to watch it with the original language and English subtitles…on the foreign set they are below the picture on these…ON THE PICTURE? ..why? when you have a widescreen do you need to put the subtitles on the images? They didn’t on my import…

this is a pretty half a…ed effort on 20th Century Fox. and I agree the last movie in particular is a joke and insult to Mr Lee. It doesn’t need inclusion.

I notice some folks take issue with “Imports” ..there is a difference between official licensed DVDs and “bootlegs” the items I am discussing are the DVDs available through Amazon.co.uk and are legit and its NOT just that there are extra DVDs for every movie but the picture is alarmingly BETTER (think BLURAY to VHS better) …the US set is worth the 10bucks you pay for it but if you are a real fan of Mr Lee and this series of movies you can own versions which run circles around what we are offered in the USA. This is not the only series of films which find better and more restored or better quality outside of the US…and this isn’t opinion but fact.

What can I say. I bought imports before and got burnt.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Bruce Lee Ultimate Collection! Click Here

Suffice it to say, this is possibly the next best thing to own. Here, you get to actually watch the movies in the original languages, with the exception of Game of Death and Game of Death II, but they were always done in English and is not a big loss.

Having the original Chinese language is great on many fronts. First off, the dubbing that was done before in English was horrendous as it always has been. Plus, some things are changed from the story line when they translate it as they try to match the lip movements to the English words.

Also, because of the translation, this sometimes causes other scenes to be thrown out. Case in point is in Way of the Dragon/Return of the Dragon. When Bruce’s character is standing outside the restaurant with his stomach growling, a man comes out and tells him to go on inside. In the American version, we see Bruce go in and then come out again, apparently after having eaten. Well, an entire scene was missed in where he goes into the restaurant to order food and can’t speak a word of English, but that’s what the waitress speaks in and what the menu is in. The entire exchange is hilarious. It also drives home the point that Bruce’s character is out of place in Rome which makes more sense with many of the scenes in the movie which seemed strange when spoken in the English language.

Now, it would have been nice to have more “extras” other than the filler stuff they have here, which is basically slide shows, trailers and interviews with people. I understand the import versions have much more, but for me, this coupled with the 2-disc Enter the Dragon DVD makes my Bruce Lee collection complete.

With the Ultimate Collection, you get a new 5.1 English soundtrack but at times, it sounds funny during the fight scenes. Specifically, it sounds like the fight is taking place in a tunnel with the reverberation turned on a little too much I guess. It can be kind of distracting and disorienting with the way it sounds, but it’s not a total loss. Still, the Chinese soundtrack is better. Different music and it just flows better.

The Chinese soundtracks are fine and make the movies much more enjoyable for me because you get to hear the true emotions of the actors. Some have complained about the subtitles being within the movie rather than in the black bars below. This is because these movies are in anamorphic wide screen, so on a HDTV, you’d have no black bars. To me, it’s not that bad. That’s how it would have been in the theaters to begin with anyways.

The picture for each of the movies are great, with the exception of Way of the Dragon. Early on, parts of it are fuzzy and out of focus. Now, this could be due to the camera shot itself because it’s not the entire shot that’s out of focus, but it’s not enough to be completely horrible or unwatchable. But, after you get past that point in Way of the Dragon, the picture is great just like in all the other movies.

The only unwatchable things are the Game of Death (minus the final fights with the REAL Bruce of course) and Game of Death II and we all know why that is. If you really want to see how the Game of Death fights were, get the 2-disc Enter the Dragon DVD which contains at least 30 minutes of the fights in the order they would have happened, including his side kicks that were supposed to come along with him but were left out of the GOD movie for obvious reasons. It’s a very interesting introspective on what Bruce was trying to envision with Game of Death and it’s a shame it was never completed the way he wanted it. Plus, all the interviews up to that point are great, with Chuck Norris, Kareem Abdul Jabar and so many other former students and martial artists that knew and worked with Bruce Lee.

To me, this set is worth 4 stars. It could have gotten 5 stars with some extra content and the strange 5.1 sounds hurt that as well, but overall, this is worth having. Couple this with the 2-disc DVD of Enter the Dragon and it’s completely worth 5 stars.

There is no better bargain in the states than this.

I write this review just one day after the news that the Sci-Fi Channel has declined to renew STARGATE SG-1 for an eleventh season. It would normally be hard to feel too bad about a show that has had ten full seasons, but it seems a shame to cancel a show that has not only demonstrated a remarkable consistency for the past ten years, but an ability to recreate itself. The show’s executive producers insist that they are not giving up yet on the series and harbor hopes of transferring it to another network. I personally hope they succeed. While we’ve had ten great years of stories about the SG-1 team, I’d welcome two or three more seasons, especially with the new team and the new threat to the galaxy introduced in Season Nine.

For most STARGATE SG-1 fans, Season Eight was something of a disappointment. It was no secret that Richard Dean Anderson was burnt out and wanted to leave the show. When SG-1 went into the field it was as a trio and not as a quartet, and Anderson’s anarchic sense of humor was severely missed. The show clearly needed to change if it was going to continue to be worth watching. When Anderson left the show at the end of Season Eight, some fans lost all interest in the show. But Ben Browder in replacing Anderson brought some fan interest of his own, having starred in the critically acclaimed, fan favorite, and tragically cancelled FARSCAPE. Although for many fans Browder could not fully replace Anderson, he definitely brought a great deal to the show. And most important, he helped restore some balance to the cast by injecting some of the same irreverence that Anderson had.

Season 9 was unfortunately interrupted by real life concerns. Both Amanda Tapping and newcomer Claudia Black had their participation in the show interfered with by pregnancy. Tapping missed the first part of the season having her baby, while Black, who was to be an ongoing part time character, had her participation limited to several episodes at the beginning and a couple at the very end. As delighted as I am that Black was able to have a child, from the standpoint of the show her unavailability was unfortunate, since she instantly brought an energy and sense of outrageousness that the show had always lacked. Of course, we didn’t know this until she appeared, but it became obvious from her guest appearance in Season 8. Black and Ben Browder had, of course, played the star-crossed lovers Aeryn Sun and John Crichton on FARSCAPE, and I was somewhat uncomfortable at the prospect of their appearing together on STARGATE. They had, of course, been involved in the greatest Sci-Fi romance story in the history of TV Sci-Fi. I was afraid that there would be attempt to throw them together on the new show. Luckily, the writers decided to loosely pair Claudia Black’s Vala with Michael Shanks’s Daniel Jackson instead of Ben Browder’s Cameron Mitchell. Nonetheless, the presence of Black and Browder on the show caused many fans to refer to it as FARGATE.

Season Eight of the show had seen the almost complete demise of the Goa’uld, so there was the need for a new enemy. The one chosen was one particularly relevant to the times: the Ori. These religious fanatics go about the universe forcibly making people conform to their religious faith or killing them. In a time when fundamentalists are rampant both in North America and the Middle East, this particular enemy has a particular topical relevance. (There are a number of vague political references throughout SG-1. The new president in Season 8 is said by O’Neill to be a “shrub,” a term that has often been used to deride George W. Bush, though all in all the show leaves its politics vague, usually refusing to explore the political ramifications of the show, largely for narrative reasons.)

All in all, I thought Season Nine was a wonderful recovery after the rather listless Season Eight. Ben Browder brought back a lot of the energy that was missing in Anderson’s lessened participation in the show while Claudia Black brought a delightful outrageousness in her episodes, something that she has continued after becoming a full time character in Season Ten. In other words, the show needed to redefine itself after Season Eight, and it did so successfully. Fans of the show how will have to hold their breath while we see if Season Ten will be the show’s last.

When I first saw the movie “Stargate”, I was captivated by the storyline: A portal that is connected to other worlds, allowing almost instantaneous transfer, is finally figured out by us lowly humans, so of course we go to investigate. So I was thrilled when it became a series, although I was only able to sporadically watch the shows at first (I have since filled in all my gaps with my DVD collection of the series). The cast choice was perfect to me, and I was happy that it stayed together as long as it did (I was extrememly happy when Michael Shanks rejoined the cast full-time). I thought it might go downhill with the departure (full-time) of Richard Dean Anderson. Thankfully, the cast and crew were able to make it through Season 8, and in Season 9, they successfully integrated new members into SG-1. Now, I’m also a huge fan of FARSCAPE, and even though I love it, I cringed when I heard that Ben Browder was going to be part of the team; I didn’t think he would fit into this scenario. However, he proved me wrong; his sense of humor is what the team needs, and even though he’ll never truly replace RDA, that’s not what I wanted anyway. He’s carved his own niche into the team, and what he’s brought is fresh and funny (when it needs to be). I was unaware that Claudia Black (again from FARSCAPE) was going to be brought in, and I again cringed, thinking that they were going to try and pair her and Browder together. Thankfully, they kind-of-paired her character “Vala” up with “Daniel Jackson”, and that has actually had me rolling on occasion. The new additions to the cast are welcome in Season 9, and even though we’ve all heard that Season 10 will be the last, I’m hoping it isn’t. This series has continuously captured my imagination, has injected their techno-geek-speak with some honestly hilarious moments, and still has more life to live!!!

Tennessee William’s play, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”, was considered so controversial that its Broadway producers forced the playwright to alter the third act. Either in spite of or because of the changes, the play was a huge hit. Even with the changes, it had to be further watered down for Hollywood’s 1958 movie version. Once more, it was a boxoffice smash. It went on to garner six Oscar nominations, including Best Actress for Elizabeth Taylor and Best Actor for Paul Newman. Despite the industry’s timidity back then, the movie was a searing, powerful drama about a family in crisis. That it remains so to this day, despite massive changes in social values and mores over the years, is a credit to its brilliant cast and to its director, Richard Brooks.

Brick and Maggie [Newman and Taylor] have come to his father’s big plantation in Mississippi to celebrate the old man’s 65th birthday. Everyone calls him Big Daddy, and as portrayed by Burl Ives, he truly is a larger than life figure. Brick’s brother, Gooper [Jack Carson], his wife, Mae [Madeleine Sherwood], and their five `little no-neck monsters” are also there. Big Daddy has just returned from several weeks at a clinic where he was treated for cancer. He thinks he is cured, but the doctors have lied to him. He’s unlikely to see his next birthday. Rivalry and intrigue abound among the siblings and their families as everyone fights over who will take over the plantation. Brick has major problems of his own. The former star athlete drinks too much, refuses the advances and affection of the gorgeous and calculating Maggie because he blames her for his best friend’s suicide, and is bitter about his father, who doesn’t seem to love him or anyone else. Brick is also hobbling around on crutches, having recently tripped while trying to leap a hurdle one drunken night. Through all the bickering and fighting, his mother, Big Mama [Judith Anderson], tries desperately to hold onto whatever happiness and dignity the family still possesses. But a storm of confrontations is brewing, and she’s powerless to stop it.

The `shocking’ element that was changed was the revelation that Brick and his friend had been lovers and that Maggie’s `crime’ was her attempt to eliminate her rival. This was changed to the friend’s killing himself because he was weak. I think when you know this, you can easily see what is going on underneath the surface between Brick and Maggie. It also makes the characters more understandable and believable. Their constant fighting makes more sense. The story becomes about more than greed, power, money and land. It becomes about the power of the human heart.

“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” is highly recommended, script changes notwithstanding.

This adaptation of a Tennessee Williams play was nominated for six academy awards in 1959. It stars Elizabeth Taylor as Maggie, rejected over and over by her alcoholic husband, Brick, played by Paul Newman. His father, Big Daddy, played by Burl Ives, has just returned to his Mississippi mansion after exploratory surgery. There’s bitter rivalry in the family as they speculate about his death. Jack Carson plays the older son, who, with his pregnant wife, played by Madeline Sherwood and their five obnoxious children are determined to inherit Big Daddy’s fortune. But Big Daddy despises him, as he does his own wife of 40 years, Big Mama, played by Judith Anderson.

As this film was originally a play, most of it is sharp and cutting dialogue, every line filled with tension and double meanings. Close-ups reveal the artistry of the actors, all of whom are excellent. I especially liked Burl Ives, whose performance called for a wide range of emotions, showing his vulnerability as well as his strength. And as the characters battled with each other, the story, which I understand was rewritten to fall within the guidelines of 1950s censors, slowly revealed itself. Some critics say this ruined this movie adaptation. I can’t comment on that because I though the story was great. Most of the film takes place inside a house and there’s almost no physical action. Not necessary. The dialog does it all. And it does it well. Recommended.
