This review is of the DVD. If you haven’t seen this 1958 classic in widescreen format, you really haven’t seen it. Director Vincente Minnelli (Liza’s father) fills each frame beautifully, often composing scenes reminiscent of the impressionist painters he so loved, such as Renoir or Seurat. Letterbox-haters, this is a good test of the superiority of seeing a movie the way the director intended, not crammed into the 1:1.33 TV screen. (The DVD includes both versions, so comparison comes cheap.)

The year is 1900. Gigi (Leslie Caron) is a pubescent young woman who becomes more and more attractive to millionaire Gaston Lachaille (Louis Jordan). But Gigi’s family has a tradition of “Instead of marrying at once, it sometimes happens we get married at last.” Making the tradition from pre-teen to beautiful young woman, awkward Gigi is “trained” in the arts of catering to men, such as choosing a cigar, walking elegantly and pouring coffee in the best French manner. The payoff for this kind of training is to occupy a rich young gentleman’s bed–until he tires of this courtesan and moves on. While still in favor, the lady in question lives in luxurious style: tutor Aunt Alicia (Isabel Jeans) advises her charge to “Wait for the first-class jewels, Gigi. Hold on to your ideals.”

The team of Lerner and Loewe wrote songs for this musical that include such favorites as “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” and “The Night They Invented Champagne.” On its initial release “Gigi” was touted as the cinematic equivalent of their smash Broadway play “My Fair Lady,” as the movie trailer on this DVD makes apparent. Gigi won a slew of Oscars, beating out the presumed favorite, Susan Heyward in “I Want to Live.”

It is no mistake that the compilation film of MGM’s best musicals, “That’s Entertainment,” features Gigi as the last chronological example of the MGM high-quality, lavish musical. Minnelli would go on to direct many more films, including the 1960 musical “Bells Are Ringing” with Judy Holliday and Dean Martin, but “Gigi” was really MGM’s “swan song” for expensive musicals, which were getting harder and harder to mount because of television and changing musical tastes (like Elvis).

With a lot of begging and pleading from the director and producer, the studio spent enough money in Hollywood to duplicate Maxim’s restaurant and the Ice Gallery, a favorite meeting-place for the 1900 elite. Minnelli’s visual wit is visible in the way he frequently uses real Parisian backgrounds of fountains and statuary, indirectly symbolizing and commenting on the mental state of the actor in front.

The whole cast is marvelous, including Hermione Gingold as Gigi’s grandmother and the incomparable Maurice Chevalier as Gaston’s uncle, Honore Lachaille. It is small wonder that this film is the very favorite–or close to it–among lovers of musicals. “Gigi” is first-class all the way. Even people who don’t often purchase musicals may well enjoy the film for its masterly visual style and recreation of turn-of-the (last) century Paris.

What more can I say? Get ahold of this film RIGHT NOW while the price is so good. I don’t think you’ll regret it.

For those wondering why they should purchase another edition of “Gigi” on DVD, here are all the extras; however, if you own a Blu-ray, you might want to wait and pre-order Gigi [Blu-ray]. Other than the technical specs, the extras are the same on both versions.

Winner of 9 Oscars, “Gigi” was produced after the demise of the original 3-Strip Technicolor system, and photographed in the industry-standardized Eastmancolor process, which had a tendency to fade to reds and purples. For this new DVD release, Gigi has been photo-chemically restored from its original camera negative and safety separations to produce a much sharper and colorful image than has been seen in decades. It also contains a 5.1 audio mix created from the original multi-track source elements.

Disc 2: “Thank Heaven! The Making of Gigi” The story of how 1958’s Best Picture winner (the last of the classic MGM musicals) survived a turbulent production that included censorship battles over its daring sexual content and creative struggles between a studio in turmoil and a demanding, visionary director. Featuring an all-new interview with star Leslie Caron, and a rare interview with Oscar-winning director Minnelli

Original 1949 Nonmusical version of Gigi starring Daniele Delorme in the title role and directed by Jacqueline Audry (in French Mono with English subtitles)

For those not familiar with the plot, Gaston (Louis Jordan) is the descendant of a wealthy Parisian family who rebels from the superficial lifestyle of upper class Parisian 1900s society by socializing with the former mistress (Hermoine Gingold) of his uncle (Maurice Chevalier) and her outgoing, tomboy granddaughter, Gigi (Leslie Caron). When Gaston becomes aware that Gigi has matured into a woman, her grandmother and aunt (Isabel Jeans), who have educated Gigi to be a wealthy man’s mistress, enjoin on him to become her provider and on her to accept such a golden opportunity. However, true love adds a surprise twist to this Cinderella story that was actually filmed in Paris.

My whole family fell in love with Brett and Jermaine in Season One. We couldn’t wait for Season Two to start on HBO and I admit,we were a little disappointed in a few of the episodes. However, after the season ended, I watched all the episodes several times again on HBO “On Demand” in April and was shocked at how fabulous some of the episodes that I thought I didn’t like were. I ended up LOVING Season Two. My favorite episode is still Unnatural Love where Jermaine dates the Australian girl…Too Many [...] on the Dance Floor and Carol Brown are great, creative, funny songs! The Cup and the Tough Bretts are other great episodes. Have fun! You’ll enjoy good intellectual humor with any of the Conchords Seasons DVD’s. I can’t wait to get mine!

I can think of other excellent comedy duos. I can think of other musical duos which I really enjoy and put on my ipod. I can think of other performance artists who do leading edge work which is visually experimental. I cannot think of any other duo, either currently or in the past, who can do all three and do them all well. The only act this even sort of reminds of is Martin & Lewis because Dean Martin could sing and their comedy was pretty good for its day. I wouldn’t go so far as to call Martin & Lewis’s work performance art though. Other than Martin & Lewis, I can’t think of anyone else like these guys at all.

Why are viewers here debating season 1 versus season 2? This is not remotely like anything else out there and it is so innovative that I can scarcely believe that it survived for a second season. If it had been on anything but HBO I think it would have been too leading edge and been cancelled after the first season. I’m not comparing the two; I am in grovel mode that there were two seasons!

Ok, here is the premise. There are two musicians from New Zealand who come to New York City (of all places) to break into the entertainment world as musicians. Their manager works for the New Zealand Commission in New York City and that job is such a no brainer that he basically can do whatever he wants with his time. The band has exactly one fan, a woman. The only reason she is a fan is that she has the hots for Bret. The guys are poor as can be. They live together in a subsistence lifestyle. And they are complete nerds on top of everything else. At first I liked Bret best because (being a woman), I found him cuter. But Jemaine has grown on me and I’ve gotten past his awful glasses and sideburns (’70s style sideburns). Their manager I find positively uproarious. Even the fan has her moments. Very often the guys deliver their lines in complete deadpan, which makes it even funnier. Oh, and they are more often than not a disaster with women. They have dates on the show and these dates rival anything we saw on SEINFELD or FRASIER (which heretofore covered dating hell rather definitively).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Flight of the Conchords: The Complete Second Season! Click Here

The best part of all is when the guys break out into song and movement, usually in an outrageous MTV kind of music video style, to comment on the latest bizarre aspect of their lives. Those performances are worth playing again and again.

I do listen to the songs on my ipod and I enjoy their music. I am not alone as their music has been voted on favorably in the NPR yearly music polls. Bob Bollein of NPR’s ALL SONGS CONSIDERED was very taken with their musical numbers without knowing a thing about their tv show. So their music is an important component of the show for me.

Funny as Bret and Jemaine are, Rhys Darby as Murray their manager deserves a special mention. He just slays me and I love every minute he is onscreen. I adore his band meetings, especially when he takes attendance and there is NEVER anyone but the three of them in the room.

Broken Arrow, in 1996 it electified the big screen as John Travolta and Christian Slater Duke it out in an orgy of explosions and action…now its out on dvd. Well, ok, that is a very good thing, but let me tell you about it really. It is a very good movie, with some excellent directing by John Woo, not to mention good acting by Travolta and Slater. Also, there are some great one-liners, also the story is not lack-luster, and is in fact anything but, it is well thought out and surpasses by a longshot those other action gore-fests that are just that, gory action — no brains. Over all this movie is very well done. I give it five stars.

Catching a line from this movie the suspense in this movie is “cool”. John Travolta and Christian Slater are at odds in this 1996 movie on the theft of two nuclear warheads in rugged terrain of Utah. At times it has you on the edge of your seat. It certainly is a far cry from Travolta’s roles in Grease and Saturday Night Fever but one of his best!!

First, I have to note that most of these reviews are for the somewhat disappointing Criterion Edition released in 1999. The version I’ll be reviewing is the much improved Divimax (high definition digital transfer)from Anchor Bay. The two DVD edition of Time Bandits from Anchor Bay has isn’t perfect but it’s a stark improvement on the previous no frills version they issued in 1999 and the Criterion Edition from the same time frame.

The high definition transfer and the fact that the film has been enhanced for 16×9 televisions are definitive improvements on the previous edition. The picture is sharper although I did note some minor edge enhancement and digital compression issues. On the whole, though, the picture looks marvelous. The first disc features only the film and it doesn’t have the great audio commentary compilation by Gilliam, Michael Palin, David Warner, John Cleese and Craig Warnock. That’s a pity because that would have made this the ultimate edition of the film.

Now the major complaint from some folks regarding the image size. Gilliam shot Time Bandits to be shown theatrically in a 1.85:1 ratio. Time Bandits was probably shot full screen (like Kubrick’s films so that they wouldn’t be badly “cropped” when released). More than likely Gilliam matted the image AFTER the film was shot. The widescreen image IS the way Gilliam intended the film to be seen).

The worst looking DVD was the one put out by the highly regarded Criterion Company. It featured interlace problems, an unstable picture (perhaps due to a flaw during the telecine transfer)and sound that sound left much to be desired. The aspect ratio (the dimension of the width and heighth of the film on screen)is correct here and the beautifully detailed transfer is so sharp that, on occasion, you can even see the limitations (there’s a hint of wires in some scenes)of Terry Gilliam’s optical effects.

The soundtrack has been remixed for the Dolby Digital EX track although I much preferred the more natural sounding 5.1 mix. Since the original source material was designed for stereo and there were some recording limitations at the time the film was made, the tinny sound is still a bit of a problem. That’s not a problem that can be easily solved unfortunately. Still, Anchor Bay does the best they can with the materials at hand.

The second disc contains all the extras. The feaurettes include the marvelous The Directors: The films of Terry Gilliam with interviews featuring Gilliam, Shelly Duvall, Brad Pitt, Amanda Plummer, Mercedes Ruehl, Madeleine Stowe and David Warner. There’s also an interview with Gilliam and Palin as well as the original theatrical trailers for the film. Some of these features duplicate comments heard on the commentary track for the film from Criterion.

There’s also a Terry Gilliam bio and, most importantly, a DVD-Rom version of the original screenplay. Both these features are no where else to be found. Anchor Bay includes a fold out Map of the Universe which also has a background on the film production.

As one would expect of a Criterion release, the DVD of “Time Bandits” is an absolute pleasure, from the clean film transfer to the many delightful added features.

The production scrapbook is a treasure, along with the commentary by Gilliam and Palin. These features truly enrich one’s appreciation for the film; not only do they lavish praise on the actors playing the “dwarves” (who, in retrospect, did nothing less than a heroic job), but also reveal many of the clever tricks that allowed them to create such a sumptuously beautiful film for the cost of Speilberg’s monthly catering bill. Compare this film to expensive clunkers like “Tron” (which came out a year later!) to appreciate the extent of Gilliam’s craft. Cleese’s description of his day’s work is howlingly funny, and David Warner is generous and wryly amusing. The now-grown Craig Warnock is not particularly eloquent, however, and it’s hard to tell if he’s joking about the film scarring him psychologically!

The trailer is simply awful, after a promising start, but it’s indicative of AVCO’s cluelessness about how to market such a fresh and original film. They tried to pass it off as Python style comedy, safe for kiddies and fun for grow-ups. In fact, it’s nothing of the kind – it’s a dangerous and rigorous film that one may wish to keep out of the hands of small children.

Despite it’s vague resemblance to “The Wizard of Oz” told upside down (or inside out?), “Time Bandits” is not a typical (modern) children’s film. It has an old-fashioned Grimm-ness, with creatures dying nasty, sweaty deaths and even “good” characters behaving quite badly at times. In short, it is more utterly honest than any fantasy film made since Disney bowdlerized “Snow White.”

Understanding that young people like to be frightened, and taking peculiar delight in how “awful” his band of dwarf thieves are, Gilliam places a very real boy (so real, he’s almost dull) in an amazing series of situations, exposing him to terrible ordeals with only a shifty gang of unreliable and occasionally stupid companions to guide and protect him – though mostly they ignore him or egg him on to be more like them (being dwarves, he towers over them, both physically and morally). At the very moment he feels he’s found the right place to be, they tear him away with no regard for his wishes or feelings, and ultimately thrust him into conflict with forces neither he nor they can comprehend, let alone master.

Sounds a bit like growing up, doesn’t it?

Along the way, Gilliam tweaks various legendary Great and Powerful Figures (Napoleon, Agamemnon, Robin Hood – even Satan [referred to exclusively as "The Evil Genius"]), not to mention technology and consumerism, to reveal the narrow-minded, clumsy, grasping people we grown-ups really are.

The ending remains controversial, although I can remember seeing it in my late teens and feeling utterly liberated by it (what teenage boy doesn’t want his parents to evaporate, at least once in a while?). There’s more honesty and meaning in the last five minutes than any patently false “happy ending” could hope to achieve, although young children conditioned to expect Pocahontas to live happily ever after with John Smith (which, of course, she didn’t) may find it too disturbing.

“Time Bandits” is a triumphant use of fantasy to articulate truth, of the power of the imagination to find the reality hidden in plain sight (the figures in the final conflict can all be found in the boy’s room in the early scenes). It’s an unforgettable film, with images and characters that will stay with you for a lifetime, even if you aren’t an impressionable, disaffected, precocious brat (like I was when I first saw it), but especially if you are!

A complex but beautiful film with characters and a storyline that has so much layers, it’s very hard even 15-years later to even describe.

Wong Kar-wai’s “ASHES OF TIME” which is an adaption of Louis Cha’s popular novels “The Legend of Condor Heroes” but yet unrelated gets remastered and re-edited and has been released in theaters in 2008 under the title “ASHES OF TIME REDUX” and will be released on DVD in March 2009.

The choice of revisiting the film was due to a major film warehouse going into bankruptcy in 1998 and Kar-Wai was asked to pick up his film or lose it. Upon finding the film, the film was in pieces. Kar-Wai knew that he wanted to re-edit the film, part of the challenge that he faced was trying to get the film from International distributors and literally having to go worldwide in trying to get the film footage needed to restore the film and then re-editing it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ashes of Time Redux! Click Here

Five years in trying to get the pieces and restoring it, the film has been reduced from 100 minutes to 93 minutes. ADR could not have been done but there was new digital color tinting, digital effects and altered scenes which certain music-based scenes were removed and also some parts during the battle.

So, essentially, what we are seeing is Wong Kar-wai’s final vision of “ASHES OF TIME”. Whether or not “REDUX” is for you, to tell you the truth, I think that for many people, unless you got hold of the film on DVD and recently watched it, I would assume that many people, like myself, who probably won’t remember the film plot may not be able to tell the differences between the original and the re-edited version. Especially with so much time has passed but if this is Wong Kar-wai’s definitive cut, then so be it, I would rather watch the film as he intended it to be.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

I understand the challenges they faced during the restoration and remastered process of having to go worldwide for certain parts of the film because the original film was in pieces and in bad shape. But for fans of Wong Kar-wai and even Christopher Doyle’s cinematography, the film was what “HERO” did for many in 2002 but in this case, back in 1994. The film was avant-garde for its time and the cinematography was just amazing.

For “REDUX”, visuals and digital color tinting and digital remastering has brought out a lot of the earthtones, the greens, the blues and where the outdoor scenery are quite beautiful, there are other scenes on video that looked great from Maggie Cheung’s lipstick to just how color was a big part of the film.

With that being said, I struggle with with my review because after watching the Criterion Blu-ray disc of “Chungking Express” (which was released in the same year as “ASHES OF TIME” in 1994), I saw how Criterion really made the film look great 15-years later. Although, I’m not watching “ASHES OF TIME REDUX” on Blu-ray, I couldn’t help but notice the amount of grain in the film.

I’m typically not against grain because film is supposed to have grain but I found the graininess in full force. In fact, some scenes seemed a bit blurry at times. This was more evident in the beginning but as the film progressed, grain was noticeable but yet you start to notice about the positive things such as the acting, cinematography and the music.

As for audio, the film features a re-edit and that includes the score. For the most part, the film is pretty much dialogue-based. Dialogue is clear and the use of the rear channels for the music was nicely done for some scenes.

But overall, I didn’t notice anything spectacular during the battle scenes, if anything it was during the musical sequences.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The “ASHES OF TIME REDUX” DVD features three special features. They are:

* Born from Ashes: The Making of ASHES OF TIME REDUX – This featurette features interviews with Wong Kar-wai, Christopher Doyle, some of the talents in the film, Yoyo Ma and others. The featurette was informative but to tell you the truth, for those wanting to know the differences of REDUX rom the original, you’re not going to find it on this featurette.

* Q&A with Wong Kar-Wai – This 45-minute featurette features an interview with Wong Kar-wai which I assume was for the New York Film Festival Q&A session in late 2008. This was an awesome featurette as you got to go into the mind of Wong Kar-wai and some rumors put to rest such as “is it true that Wong Kar-wai doesn’t use scripts” to learning about how challenging it was for the HK stars to work in mainstream China and travel over there. Cast and crew had major difficulties filming in the desert and how Maggie Cheung refused to go to China, thus her shots were all indoor in Hong Kong. Learning about his relation with his editor William Chang and DP Christopher Doyle and how the three are a great team. A lot of interesting tidbits of facts for those who are curious about Wong Kar-Wai’s work.

* “ASHES OF TIME REDUX” Trailer

Let me first say that I enjoyed “ASHES OF TIME REDUX” for its cinematography and the acting by all those involved. Visually, at that time and even now, knowing how challenging it was for Wong Kar-Wai, Christoper Doyle and the cast to film “ASHES OF TIME”, what they were able to create in the end was artistic. But at the same time, the overall plot can be a bit complex for some.

It’s a film that has so many layers and I’ve watched this film many times in the past and watched “REDUX” twice now, just to see what I can get from it. And each time, I do… it’s a melancholic feeling of loneliness, sadness, rejection, betrayal but aside from the visual aspect and the complexity of the film, I guess it depends on the viewer for interpretation and what they get out of it.

Throughout the years, I’ve met may who have been able to watch this film and look at it as an early masterpiece by Wong Kar-Wai. For me, from 15 years ago and today, I still feel that the film set many things in motion for current martial arts films in Hong Kong and how far one can go if they put all they have to it.

I realize Wong Kar-Wai calls this his “Days of Being Wild”, when he and his team created this film and overcome a lot of challenges of filming in Western China, Christopher Doyle using no tripod or dollies. And really pushing the envelope of HK filmmaking in 1994. And they continue to do it today.

So, I see “ASHES OF TIME REDUX” for what it accomplished when it first was released in 1994 and how it paved the way for many HK martial arts/wuxia genre-based films. Before a film like “HERO” or “RED CLIFF”, what “ASHES OF TIME” did for me was show determination, hope and creativity.

“ASHES OF TIME REDUX” on DVD does shows its age and is hampered with a lot of grain but with his other 1994 film “Chungking Express” receiving the Blu-ray treatment, I often wonder if going 1080P high-definition improve the video quality dramatically.

I will say that the two featurettes included on the DVD is priceless. Any interviews with Wong Kar-wai on video are quite rare and thus, I really enjoyed the inclusion of those two.

All in all, “ASHES OF TIME REDUX” is definitely a nostalgic piece of avant-garde filmmaking and beautiful cinematography. But it’s one of those films that either one gets it or they don’t. Nevertheless, it’s a Wong Kar-wai film worth watching.

I must thank Newsweek or I never would have heard about this movie. If I Had not read about it in the previous review I never would have known about the supposedly poor quality f the DVD because I never noticed it. I found the cinematography very compelling with its four seasons was striking especially during the Summer portion. I believe that Ashes of Time Redux is a great movie as defined by Roger Ebert, a movie so compelling you want to watch it again. This movie is universal in it themes, has a compelling score, has bold cinematography and a compelling characters and a beautifully sad ending that brought tears to my eyes.

Those who like period pieces will very much enjoy this made for television movie, which is loosely based upon Louisa May Alcott’s novella of the same name, which novella she wrote when she was all of seventeen. With an excellent cast and deft direction, this Cinderella-ish, happily-ever-after story is one that the whole family can enjoy.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Inheritance! Click Here

The film, which takes place in nineteenth century America, focuses upon a wealthy family, the Hamiltons. Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton (Tom Conti and Meredith Baxter) live in elegant splendor on a vast estate with their bookish teenage daughter, Amy (Brigitta Dau), and her slightly older companion, Edith Adelon (Cari Shayne), whom Amy adores, along with a large retinue of servants. Edith has a place in the household that is somewhere between upstairs and downstairs, as she is more than a servant but not quite family.

It appears that Edith, an orphan, has been raised in the household since infancy, when the Hamiltons went to Italy to settle the estate of Mr. Hamilton’s estranged older brother. The Hamiltons found the infant Edith abandoned on the Italian estate of Mr. Hamilton’s brother and believed her to be the daughter of a servant who died in childbirth. The Hamiltons were so smitten with her that they took her back to America with them and proceeded to raise her.

Now a young woman, Edith’s life is thrown into a tailspin when the Hamilton’s beautiful cousin, Ida (Bridget Conley Walsh), comes to visit and be introduced to some eligible bachelors. The Hamiltons arrange for a very eligible and wealthy bachelor, James Percy (Thomas Gibson), to stay with them with an eye towards his making a love match with Ida. While shopping, Edith, however, briefly meets a handsome young man by the blacksmith’s shop, and when their eyes lock, it is love at first sight. She later discovers when James Percy arrives that he is the young man with whom she has fallen in love and realizes that he is beyond her reach.

The Hamiltons, however, include Edith in their social plans for Amy, Ida, and James, primarily as a companion for Amy so that Ida and James can have some time to get to know each other. When disaster strikes, however, and Edith saves the day, the Hamiltons reward her by inviting her to a ball. There, the host takes offense that the Hamiltons should presume to insult him by appearing with the hired help, and Ida makes sure that Edith knows this, ruining Edith’s evening in the process.

This pomposity gets Mr. Hamilton’s dander up, and he will brook no insult to Edith. Meanwhile, James has been smitten by Edith, who draws away from him because they inhabit two different worlds, a point that the mean-spirited and jealous Ida wastes no time in driving home. Edith also draws away from him because she believes that there is a budding romance between James and her beloved Amy, whom she would not hurt for all the love and money in the world. Meanwhile, Ida continues creating mischief.

When Edith saves Mr. Hamilton’s honor by winning a horserace against the pompous host of the ball that she attended, all is well, more so because she defied convention, riding astride rather than sidesaddle. Then, Mr. Hamilton makes a discovery that shakes him to the core. A deathbed confession to Edith will bring tears to even the most hardened of viewers. This in turn causes Edith to make an unprecedented and noble decision. Unfortunately, on the heels of her potential sacrifice, a mysterious theft crops up, and Ida points the figure at Edith. At this juncture, a deus ex machina appears in the unlikely guise of a servant. Suffice it to say that all is well that ends well.

I absolutely loved this film, despite the fact that it was somewhat predictable. It is just a lovely period film with fine performances by the entire cast. I still cannot understand why Canadian actor Thomas Gibson has not yet become a major star, given his exceeding good looks and talent. Tom Conti is especially endearing as the somewhat liberal blue blood who champions Edith. Cari Shayne gives a luminous performance as the noble Edith, while Meredith Baxter is excellent in the role of the somewhat thoughtless Mrs. Hamilton. Bridgitta Dau shines as the bookish but irrepressible Amy, and Bridget Conley Walsh is well cast as the beautiful but soulless Ida.

This film is well worth having in one’s personal collection, if one is a devotee of period pieces or simply a fan of Louisa May Alcott. Moreover, at the price for which it is selling, this DVD has got to be one of the best bargains around.

If “Little Women” is the novel wrapped around Jo March, then “The Inheritance” is her sister Beth — small and unnoticed, but sweet and beautiful all the same. This lovely period TV movie is (very loosely) based on the mediocre novel of the same name, by the classic author Louisa May Alcott, and this is one of the few instances where the movie is vastly better than the book.

Edith Adelon (Cari Shayne) has lived with the wealthy Hamilton family ever since she was a baby, and is now the companion of bookish Amy (Brigitta Dau), and a good horsewoman to boot. But her life changes with the arrival of two guests at the Hamiltons’ home: the beautiful, calculating Ida (Brigid Conley Walsh) and handsome James Percy (Thomas Gibson).

James and Edith are drawn together first as friends, and then by something deeper. But Ida, who wants him for herself, manipulates Edith into rejecting James when he proposes to her. Then after Edith takes place in a famed horse race, mysterious thefts and a family tragedy threaten to derail her entire life with the Hamiltons.

Louisa May Alcott wrote “The Inheritance” when she was only seventeen, and the book is syrupy, over-romancitized and cliched. But the movie “The Inheritance” is what Alcott probably would have turned the book into, had she rewritten it instead of burying it in a trunk. The wilting lily Edith is replaced with a strong, friendly young woman, and the plot is spiced up with some social commentary.

To some degree, it’s a typical love-conquers-all romance, and the dialogue borders on cheesy at times, although overall the scripting pretty good. It’s the execution that is likeable. The characters ramble around lush manorhouses full of light and beauty, or idyllic forests. And the gooey romance is glossed over with some sharp commentary on stuffy traditions and hypocrisies, such as why women were not allowed to ride astride. Also a touch of tragedy, when one of the characters dies.

Cari Shayne is quite good as Edith, especially since she has to be so NICE all the time; Gibson is similarly good, and they have some solid chemistry. Walsh is not so good, but Ida is given few dimensions beyond a catty nastiness. And Dau, Meredith Baxter and Tom Conti are excellent as the brainy, bookish Amy, the long-suffering Mrs. Hamilton, and the rebellious but sweet Mr. Hamilton.

“The Inheritance” takes the same-named novel and rips it apart, turns it inside out, reembroiders it and sticks it back together — and the result is remarkably polished and strong. Louisa May Alcott would have been proud.

“Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040″ is a remake of the 80’s OAV anime “Bubblegum Crisis 2032″ and it’s TV sequal “Bubblegum Crash”. I’ve not seen the originals, but I know “2032″ is considered a classic.

Storywise, we follow the antics of a group known as Knight Sabers. These are four girls who have day jobs but at night, they come together to destroy rogue boomers. Boomers are androids that can look like machines all the way to nearly human. While an organization known as AD Police was created to deal with the boomer problem, only the vigilante Knight Sabers have any luck dealing with them.

The story at first feels very much like a female version of Batman. You have the rich Sylia Stingray who’s the Bruce Wayne/Batman. Priss, Nene, and Linna are the Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl. However, after several episodes, the series lost the Batman feel as the series begins to shift into an almost non-stop action fest. There is some humor and some romance to make this series better rounded than it otherwise would have been.

DVD-wise, I wasn’t that impressed with the Engish dub. The Engish subtitles for the Japanese audio is pretty good though I wish that at times the font color/shading had been clearer. Some fansubbers do a better job at subtitles than the official ones.

There are 6 DVD’s in this set. Discs 1-4 contain 4 episodes and discs 5-6 contain 5 episodes. Be warned that each DVD starts with ADV previews so you’ll have to hit “Menu” to bypass all that. There are no real extras to speak of. Surpising to me is the fact that there is a Spanish dub in addition to the English dub. So those who want to watch this in Spanish may do so.

Bottom line: This is a really good mecha anime title with a story that will keep you glued to your seat most of the time.

If you didn’t know, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 is the remake of the classic series Bubblegum Crisis and Bubblegum Crash. Although this was originally called a “techno punk” series, that feeling is only left to spice up the series, not give it a new flavor altogether. The characters are made far more realistic in this series, the Knight Sabers organization isn’t made to be as fragile or omnipotent as it was in the other two series, and the plot is taken to its fullest extent.

In the year 2040, seven years has gone by since the great earthquake of 2033. The city has been rebuilt from its base on up by the Genom corporation, and its primary product is a type of worker robot called boomers. However, boomers sometimes go “rogue,” meaning that they lose their original core structuring and change into a monster that has the tendency to ravage the city. The police can’t stop them, so the task is left up to the Knight Sabers, a group of female mercenaries (who eventually turn into heroes) with advanced weaponry.

Most of the series is taken from the viewpoint of Linna Yamazaki, although other viewers may disagree about the true viewpoint. Although she may be a “country bumpkin,” she is far more complex than that. She comes off as being naive and a bit silly at times, but beneath that lies the glue that often times keeps the Knight Sabers together. She refuses to take trouble from anybody, and will often stick up for other people without first thinking out the situation. At the beginning of the series, she is trying to join the Knight Sabers, but she never sees it as another job, but rather a chance to help stop rogue boomers from hurting people and the city that she has just become apart of.

Priscilla Asagiri (commonly just refered to as Priss) is the typical hard rock and biker woman. She is often times antisocial, very quiet, and aggressive. This is amplified by the fact that she joined the Knight Sabers for the money and for the thrill of combat with rogue boomers. She has a deep love for motorcycles and for her music. Although her hard rock band isn’t very big yet, they tour the local clubs in Tokyo, but can often be found at Hot Legs nightclub. Later in the series, the tough attitude begins to wear off of Priss, as she begins to show more affection towards others, and she stops critizing others altogether.

Sylvia Stingray is the original creator of the Knight Sabers, which is backed by a large amount of capital generated by both her businesses and by the large inheritance that her father left her upon his death. She is usually found providing the Knight Sabers with support in the rear of the action, giving informational reports and letting them know their situation, even though she is an excellent combatant with her hard suit. Despite her sexy appearence and her sometimes very feminine comments, Sylvia is prone to extreme outbursts of fury and disgust, which are usually triggered by mentioning either Genom or boomers. Despite her fragile emotional bubble, she is usually quite calm, competent, and demonstrates numerous leadership qualities. However, Sylvia knows a lot more about the boomers and Genom than she is willing to mention to the rest of the Knight Sabers, and we only begin to learn their relationship later in the series.

Nene Romanova is the “baby” of the Knight Sabers. While she is 18 and works for the A.D. Police, she sometimes acts half her age. She is usually teased because of her young age, and her demeanor only enhances the reasons why. She is childlike, bashful, and is far more playful than even Linna is. In the Knight Sabers, she is the worst in combat, however, she more than makes up for that with her intellect and excellent hacking skills. She can usually dig up information on Genom and boomers by hacking through the net, and more often than not, she is forced to hack directly into Genom.

The plot is quite good. Although it may seem like the “boomer of the week” phenomenon at the start of the series, the main storyline is still followed, but takes full hold of the series roughly around episode 10. From that point on, its a nonstop ride with mostly action, and a little bit of comedy and romance thrown in to spice things up when it seems like it may be boring. Take note that at this point, they will begin to get more technical, with a more philosophical edge rounding out the end of the series.

The english dubbing was decent. The only points that can be marked as “Very Bad” would be when Priss is singing. When she does, the words and lip movements do not match at all, but you won’t really notice that. The one part that this series didn’t pass up on was a good musical soundtrack. Priss’s songs, even in the english dubbing, are quite good (if hard rock is your thing), and the background music add that little extra to scenes.

If you are a fan of the older series Bubblegum Crisis and Bubblegum Crash, you should definitely see Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040. It adds a lot more to each of the main characters, and even the more minor characters in the older series are made more important and taken to a much further extent. I’d have to say that this series surpasses the other’s in the music department as well, which was something that made them an underground classic. The DVD’s have some nice extras, however, you may want to skip through the ADV previews at the beginning of each DVD if you don’t feel like being enticed into buying some other good anime series. Still, once you begin to watch this series, you’ll soon forget the previews and your eyes won’t leave the screen except to put in the next DVD. =)

The historical significance of the typeface as well as the on-going evolution of typography make this a must see for anyone interested in typography and graphic design, but also a fine entertainment for film enthusiasts. Compelling interviews with notable professionals are informative, witty and often hilarious. Visuals run the gamut from elegance to true grit. Kudos to Gary Hustwit and his crew for this living history before it is not longer possible.

I’m a working graphic designer.

I’m an art graduate. As a child, I enjoyed to look at fonts for hours – a Letraset catalogue(titled in big Helvetica letters) from the 80s was one of my (most) prized possessions.

When I first heard about this movie I was thrilled. Now that I saw it, I can say it was worth my time. The movie is smart, witty, and a pleasure to behold – an endless stream of layouts. And valuable insights, commentaries and history. Oh yes, the film is also inspirational – it makes you think about good design. It makes you desire good design, whatever that may mean today.

My favourite quote from the movie:

“The life of a designer is a life of fighting–fight against the ugliness, just like a doctor fights against disease. For us visual disease is what we have around and what we try to do is try to cure it somehow, you know, with design.” Thanks Mr. Vignelli for putting things into perspective.

Given Helvetica’s importance in design history, this is not a movie you should miss.

I first saw Helvetica(the font) as a child, I first acknowledged it as a high school design student, now it’s one of my 3 most used fonts at work. I know it’s flaws and shortcomings, and I’ve come to rely on it’s many strengths and virtues. It’s versatile, strong and straightforward. It’s one you can trust. It’s also got a softer side, when you come to know her better. It’s an old friend of mine, that now is starring in it’s own movie! Now that’s something to celebrate.

Cheers, Helvetica! Cheers, old friend!

This is one of twelve movies of Rathbone as Holmes put out during the war and shortly thereafter by Universal. All twelve stories are newly written and not contained in the originally published series. Holmes is played in the traditional was as a talented person who is always willing to help others while interjecting some humor in the process. This Holmes is very humble and does not suffer from the mental illness of egomania. This is in stark contrast to the Brett version where Holmes displayed arrogance and airs of secret knowledge which is almost exclusively done in real life by people who are marginal performers.

This particular story plot is somewhat less imaginative and realistic compared to the other eleven, but it is still entertaining to watch.

The digital remastering makes the quality like a recently made movie without any visual or audio flaws.

Were it not for “Sherlock Holmes in Washington,” “Pursuit to Algiers” would no doubt be considered the very strangest of the Universal Holmes series. The initial mystery at the start of the film is completely obliterated by a plot that is little more than a thriller set on a cruise liner. Ever seen Sherlock Holmes play bodyguard for a foreign dignitary? No? How about his clever defeat of not one, not two, but three expert assassins? Never seen that, either? Well, now’s your chance!

In all fairness, it’s not that bad – it just doesn’t feel like a Sherlock Holmes story. For better or worse, with this film the Universal series is heading into its final decline, and the writers have abandoned all hope of making the films so much as resemble a real Conan Doyle story. As a result, they’re resorting to things like cruise liners to liven up what’s becoming a somewhat flat formula. It’s not a bad idea, but unfortunately, it does away with most of the fog-and-darkness mystique that everyone loves about Sherlock Holmes.

Basil Rathbone himself is, by now, starting to seem very tired. For most of the plot, he stays rooted in a sort of bored, dour mode, only occasionally shifted by a moment such as his (unusually amused) appraisal of Watson’s choice in women. Nigel Bruce, on the other hand, is having a ball. Thankfully, he’s less embarassingly inept than in the previous film, “The Woman in Green,” and more bizarre still, he’s actually the focus for much of this picture. Watson is genuinely concerned for Holmes early on, grieves for him when he’s believed dead, has a couple of nice comic moments, and – best of all – gets to sing “Loch Lomond.” (I’m fairly sure that’s Nigel Bruce’s actual singing voice, too. Great timbre.) All in all, it’s probably Bruce’s best outing since “The Scarlet Claw.”

There may not be much mystery here, but the thriller aspect is not done poorly; there are some very fun scenes of Holmes matching wits and banter with the villains. There’s also a real surprise at the end – a shocker for one of these Holmes pictures, actually – that helps to raise the film up from the rather lacklustre story.

This picture has, with its eleven fellow films, been painstakingly restored by the UCLA Film and TV Archive for the DVD release. It has a few quality problems, and is singled out for that in the “Sherlock Holmes Collection: Volume Two” restoration featurette, but most of the trouble comes at the very beginning and (quite abrupt) ending of the film. For the majority of its length, it looks fine, albeit with the occasional flicker, and I found it far less distracting than the variable picture on “The House of Fear.”

All told, this is a fun and watchable entry in the Universal Holmes series, but not one of the essentials. If you’re going to buy it for completeness’ sake, go with MPI’s “Sherlock Holmes Collection: Volume Three” set; otherwise, casual fans should stick with a rental.

This was a pretty good show. Some segments were too short, and others too long, but all in all it’s a good journey back in time for an hour and a half.

From a different era and better than 90% of the disgusting shows on during prime time now. My grand kids of all ages love to watch it with me and ask why there aren’t shows like it now.
