I attend school with the director J. Bland and let me say that I am sooooo ecstatic that this film is available for purchase. I really think that he did a phenomenal job, being that this is his first film as a director. The actors were amazing as well….and the singing was really a showcase. Whether you are a student at FAMU, a movie buff or a ‘collector’, please support this movement/empire that J. Bland is leading.

Upon popping the dvd in and program beginning, I thought…oh crap I wasted seven bucks. It starts with a very basic menu and program begins with some very poor animation. A disclaimer also appears stating that some of the film was pulled from archived sources and may be poor quality. Yikes…..

…..it’s all uphill from there.

The light show begins set to some of our Christmas favorites: Deck the Halls, 12 Days of Christmas, Angels We Have Heard on High, Carol of the Bells, God Rest Ye Marry Gentlmen, Good King Wencelas, Ding Dong! Merrily on High, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, The Holly and the Ivy, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, Jingle Bells, Joy to the World, O Little Town of Bethlehem, O Christmas Tree, Prelude, Silent Night, The First Noel, Here We Come A Wassailing, We Three Kings, O Come All Ye Faithful, Winter Chill and Hark The Herald Angels Sing….in that order.

The picture quality is fair, soundtrack is great and the light displays range from hokey to outstanding…this is surely a dvd that the family can enjoy. At worst, let it play during a party or family get together, it may just catch someone’s eye.

This movie changed my life. How? The books that the character ‘Troy’ (Ethan Hawke) either reads or references in the movie. Sure, it’s a great movie but what meant the most for me was the director’s or writer’s (or whoever it was) choice to use or reference the following books: Martin Heidegger’s “Being and Time”, Robert Pirsig’s “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” and John Steinbeck’s “The Winter of Our Discontent”. Read those books and you will be forever changed!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Reality Bites! Click Here

The opening speech by Lelaina (Winona Ryder) at the beginning sets an accurate mood for the rest of the film: optimism tinged with confusion and a lack of direction. In reality, the young adults in this film depict only a small slice of their generation, those who “aren’t interested in the counterculture that they [our parents] invented as if we did not see them disembowel their revolution for a pair of running shoes.” I may be a few years behind the generation portrayed in the film, but I’m not entirely without empathy for the restless plight of this group of slackers. Even so, the speech is a horrible oversimplification of the generation gap of the time, and the film is more easily digested if the core group of characters is seen as only one slice of a very large generation.

There is a lot of similarity between Reality Bites and films like Garden State and Harold and Maude, sharing the same ennui and restlessness that seems insatiable and overwhelming. The striking difference, though, is Reality Bites’ strong sense of friendship and community as a means of overcoming this ennui. I felt that if any of these characters were left entirely to himself, he would commit suicide, and the core group of friends is what saved them all.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Reality Bites! Click Here

Unfortunately, their friendships are not enough to keep them from slipping into a dangerous selfishness and narcissism: Lelaina refuses for a while to find a paying job, and only seems to be attracted to Troy (Ethan Hawke) because of the emotions he conjures up in her; Troy, even after saying that she is the only woman he could commit to, says, “You can’t navigate me, I might do mean things, and I might hurt you and I might run away without your permission”; Vickie (Janeane Garofalo) is addicted to sex but hates the thought of a lasting relationship; and Sammy (Steve Zahn) is full of wounded pride. Michael (Ben Stiller) is intellectually shallow, but he seems to be the only person with any emotional maturity, and he easily sees through Troy’s snobby attitude.

ENDING SPOILERS: The film ends with a romance between Lelaina and Troy that seems destined to end badly if Troy doesn’t wise up and accept the criticism that’s been levelled at him. There’s a part of me that cheered for him, but a larger part that wanted to smack him in the face until he wised up and applied for grad school. The problem with these kids is that they are immature, and have no ideal of maturity to attain to. Their parents (of the rebellious 60s generation) rejected their own parents’ ideas of maturity, and so their own children have very little left to work with. Reality Bites is more of a romantic tragedy than a romantic comedy, even though it seems to turn out well in the end. I really wanted the characters to find something better to build their lives on, but when the credits rolled I was afraid they would just keep repeating their mistakes for the rest of their lives.

For what it’s worth, the acting and directing are quite good, though not great. I got a kick out of seeing so many big-name actors at a younger age. Ben Stiller’s direction is good, and not as manic as what he later did in Zoolander. Unfortunately there aren’t any special features except production notes and a forgettable trailer.

EN LA PUTA VIDA is a very well made, polished, intelligent film from Uruguay that begins as what seems to be a comedy and develops into a provocative drama – much the way events in life mimic such changes. Director and co-writer Beatriz Flores Silva knows her way around tough subject matter and is able to bring out sterling performances by a very fine cast.

Elisa (the very beautiful and talented Marianna Santangelo) is a hairdresser with two children, born of different fathers, who lives with her mother while trying to convince her latest paramour Garcia (Augusto Mazzarelli) to leave his wife and marry her. She dreams of having her own Salon in the rich district of Montevideo and will stop at nothing to achieve her goal. When her life falls apart and she is desperate to make enough money to open her Salon, she is invited into the world of fast money (prostitution) by her best friend Lulu (Andrea Fantoni), and enters the tutelage of Madame Dona Jacqueline (a terrific cameo by Graciela Esuder!). In her new role Elisa encounters the handsome but wily Placido (played by Silvestre) who invites her to bed and to Barcelona, Spain with promises that she will make so much money that she not only will be able to send money back to her children, but also have more than enough to open her Salon in the fanciest part of her native Montevideo. Elisa and Lulu join other prostitutes in this promise of wealth and fly to Barcelona – and unexpected white slavery. There she works her corner but is in the presence of a gang of Brazilian transvestites controlled by a mob. She is arrested by a policeman-with-heart Marcelo (the very handsome and gifted actor Jose ‘aka Josep’ Linuesa) and when her ‘man’ Placido reveals himself for what he is (a greedy, heartless pimp), Elisa works with Marcelo to uncover the mob violence of the streets to gain a return to her beloved Montevideo. How the story ends is left to the pleasure of the viewer.

Apparently this story is based on some degree of fact: in the 1980s to the present many Latin American women have been promised wealth in joining the prostitution business in Spain only to become victims of white slavery. Director Silva is able to make this rather terrifying reality into a story that, though sensual, is never in bad taste: the story is more important that portraying the sex-for-sale scenes. Mariana Santangelo is a very fine actress and this film is just the right vehicle to put her in the ranks of international stardom. The photography in both Uruguay and Spain is beautiful, the musical score is exceedingly well written and evocative, and the end result is a film that opens the door for Uruguayan films to be taken seriously. Highly recommended.

Direction, acting, music, photography, everything in this uruguayan movie works together to conform a little work of art. Beautiful and modern interpretations of Uruguayan tango as background music, very good actors and excellent photography with plenty of close-ups. I highly recommend it, regardless of whether the subject interests you. If you appreciate good cinema, go for it.

.hack//SIGN is really a love-hate series. You pretty much either love it or hate it. I have to say I’m pretty much on the ‘love’ side.

One thing about .hack is that the pacing is *VERY* slow. Extremely slow. That fact tends to annoy alot of people. What was 30 min. in real life feels like less than 5 min. in the episode. I’m exaggerating, but even from a .hack lover, it’s true.

.hack//SIGN revolves around a boy (or possibly a girl) called Tsukasa. He is in a virtual reality game played by millions called ‘The World.’ Problems begin to arise when he is unable to log out of the World. Things that are theoretically impossible in the World are possible around him. He is able to retain his senses of touch, smell, taste, etc. Now you must wonder ‘Who cares? Who cares if he can still retain his sense of touch, smell, etc.?’ The reason it’s a big deal is because it is a VIRTUAL REALITY GAME. You are supposed to be UNABLE to reatain those senses. However, he can feel pain and stuff there which makes everyone wonder…. .hack is *VERY* mysterious and can be very confusing at times (I’ve argued with friends over several points in it. ^^U). You see alot of things in it that make you question and go ‘Who’s that? What do they do? Why are they here?’

A key point in .hack’s composition is the music. The music is insanely awesome. I am NOT exaggerating. Yuki Kajura did a *VERY* good job on the music. The music fits .hack completely and is very well composed. It has a sort of mysterious, yet enchanting and alluring feel to it which fits .hack perfectly.

When people think anime, they think violence, curse words, sometimes nudity, and sometimes even worse things. Dot Hack Sign, however, is a step above all of them. The Dot Hack Sign story is fantastic, and considering that Dot Hack Sign relies wholly upon its story to keep its viewers interested, that’s saying quite a lot. People who have become hooked on anime for its violence, action, destruction, and adult content should avoid Dot Hack Sign. There is very, very little action in the series (I’ve seen all of it, so I know), and it is liable to bore people who are more interested in flashy animation. Dot Hack Sign’s story, however, is enthralling. The characters are developed so well, and the story executed so wonderfully, that you find yourself actually caring about what goes on. After watching all of the series, I even found myself caught up in it for several days afterward. It is that sort of story that endears itself to you, so that you’ll never forget it. As mentioned before, the story progresses slowly, but you can easily get caught up into it and don’t notice. Normal 25-minute episodes seem to stretch for an hour, which is only a bad thing if you have to go to the bathroom. The story spans itself across all of the episodes, and there aren’t any “breather” episodes that provide a pause in the story (instead, the writers cleverly wrote an episode or two like that into the story). This provides a very solid story, though you’re in trouble if you miss an episode. Overall, this is my favorite anime series out of all that I have seen (and I have seen many), and that is not to disparage anime. In fact, I can safely say that this is my most favorite series of any genre, anime or otherwise.

Recommended to: People who love character development and long, elaborate, and great stories. People who want a great story that catches them and makes them actually care about it and its characters.

Not recommended to: People who like action and violence, and lots of it, people who are looking for traditional Western stories, or people who dislike stories that develop slowly.

This new DVD from Arthaus faces formidible competition from Gheorghiu’s first Violetta on Decca; this was her “double” debut, both on DVD and CD. It was her first undertaking of the role and clearly she meant to make it her own. The conductor, Solti, allows for the second verses to arias that are either frequently cut (O mio rimorso and Addio del passato) and includes the cabaletta to Di provenza–not one of Verdi’s most inspired moments.

Buy,Download, Or Stream La Traviata at La Scala! Click Here

This new DVD uses sets that were new in 1990 although I don’t think anyone could lodge a complaint in this area: they are opulent, plush and quite gorgeous. The conservative opera goer will have no complaint here. If memory serves me correctly this is the same production that featured Tiziana Fabriccini, an interpretation that was very controversial, Roberto Alagna and Paolo Coni and conducted by Muti. It should be re-released by whoever has the licensing rights.

Gheorghiu matches all the excellences of her earlier performance. She always looks stunning, sings beautifully and is an accomplished actress. I can’t think of any other singer who has this role in her repertoire could match this diva. Yes, it’s true that she doesn’t take the optional high D at the end of the first act aria, but that’s what it is: an option. Her performance is nuanced and touching. I have heard some of Fleming’s performance but I find her superficial and dramatically utterly uninvolved. (A downside to the LOs Angeles DVD is Bruson who in his prime was a baritone to be reckoned with; here, at 70 (!) his tone is partched and is afflicted with a wobble which is very distressing.)

Buy,Download, Or Stream La Traviata at La Scala! Click Here

Vargas is a great improvement over Lopardo who is somewhat wooden and appears uncomfortable. The former would never be accused of being a great actor but his instincts are always right and while not being “handsome” he has a cherubic sweetness that is very engaging. He has clearly thought out the requirements of the music and brings a great deal of imagination. A pity that the second verse of O mio rimorso was cut as it spoils the musical balance that Verdi was aiming for. (Gheorghiu was also denied her second verse in the Addio del passato.)

Frontali is a vast improvement over Nucci who by rights should be able to shine in this role; the latter became a “Verdi baritone” by default. His milieu is clearly in the Donizetti/Bellini/Rossini operas. the voice is slender, but well focused, but I prefer Fontali’s bigger more rugged sound. Of course he has no competition–at least none that I know of on the horizon.

Initially I had my doubts about Maazel. In the 70’s (I am hazarding a guess)he recorded Traviata with Lorengar, Aragall and DFD. It was a near complete text if I recall, but Decca management doubtless came down with the mandate to get it on two LP discs. As a result the tempi were brutal in many cases and even though the set did garner some good reviews I have no doubt that it was due to Lorengar. Here Maazel seems much more relaxed and at one with the score. In short one of the best performances of Traviata that I have heard.

For those who want or require a regie Traviata stay away. There is no Konzept here. I would dearly love to see the Venice performance (again Maazel I believe) and even though what I have seen of Villazon/Netrebko is more than offputting (more due to Rizzi who seems to be this generation’s Molinari-Pradelli). The cover on the Bel Aire DVD is a Maryln Monroe ‘manque”–not the association I make with Traviata. OTOH if a conventionally staged, directed production of this opera is what you want I can only recommend this new set.

Puccini – La Boheme (The Metropolitan Opera HD Live Series)

The opening night of this production at La Scala last year was greeted by controversy that got the star soprano and conductor lustily booed by the angry audience. The Italian papers came up with some speculations as to why that nasty audience response happened. When I first looked at the cover of this DVD, the first thing I noticed was the pretty picture of Angela Gheorghiu ; the next, the names of Ramon Vargas and Roberto Frontali were printed significantly smaller than the names of the soprano and conductor Lorin Maazel. I thought it was in bad taste and slighted the other two principals who are top Verdi singers of this generation with distinguished operatic careers. After listening to the performance on this DVD, I thought I had a better take on the controversy than those Italian papers. My theory is that the soprano and conductor hatched a

scheme to do something on that first night performance that would surely enrage the passionate La Scala audience and make themselves the wronged victims. In a subsequent performance used for this DVD, they performed tremendously, and the guilt-ridden and contrite boo birds apologized with huge ovations for them, which was the object of their plot to sell this DVD. But to further reward the conspirators by printing their names much larger than everyone else is going too far. Having said that, the performance here is superb.

Despite some negative comments in the papers about the 20-yr old production sets used here, I prefer it to the Met’s Zeffirelli production with its extremes and some garishness particularly in Act2. It’s a relief to see Violetta in her last moments in a modest but decent surroundings, not in some dilapidated warehouse. All principals are in top form. As noted earlier, Vargas and Frontali are preeminent Verdi singers and great choice as the Germonts. Gheorghiu is not a typical or traditional Verdi soprano (the likes of Tebaldi, Freni or even Moffo) but she has a beautiful, expressive voice with dark shades for a wide range of expressions and is a very convincing actress. With sensitive and generous partners in Vargas, Frontali and Maazel, she can be a marvelous Violetta as demonstrated on this disc. My little complaint is the stage direction and coaching that let Vargas do a lot of distracting things while singing his one aria in Act2 – looking for cup and saucer, pouring his coffee, and singing his one-verse O Mio Rimorso while lugging a suitcase and rummaging through some unmentionables looking for a document. Miraculously, he did not miss a beat and sang with his customary elegance and vibrancy in rich and burnished tones. For the most part, the singing and acting of the three principals, the contributions of everyone, comprimarios, dancers, chorus, orchestra and , of course, the crafty Maazel throughout the opera – all make this brilliant DVD a must have and worthy addition to everyone’s collection of this wonderful opera.

“San Francisco”, MGM’s ‘Showcase’ film of 1936, demonstrates why no other studio could ‘touch’ Metro at it’s prime. Take the biggest star in Hollywood, team him with the ‘Queen’ of 1930s MGM musicals, add the greatest film actor of a generation in support, then top things off with a ‘no-expense-spared’ recreation of the most famous earthquake in American history, and an instant Classic was born!

Buy,Download, Or Stream San Francisco! Click Here

Seventy years later, the film has lost little of it’s luster; certainly the ‘Message’ is a bit heavy-handed, the long opera sequences may make some viewers cringe, and some of the effects (involving double exposures) seem quaint in an era of CGI…but Clark Gable still projects his signature cockiness and virility, Jeanette MacDonald is still radiant (and can sure belt out “San Francisco”), and Spencer Tracy is still magnificent (it is easy to see why he received a ‘Best Actor’ nomination, in what was obviously a supporting role; he easily steals the film, in every scene he’s in).

Directed by the remarkable W.S. (’Woody’) Van Dyke, a consummate craftsman, and one of MGM’s fastest directors (contradictory terms, but he combined speed and style, effortlessly), with a screenplay, surprisingly, by future “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” author, Anita Loos (from a story by Robert Hopkins), “San Francisco” exudes confidence, from the riotously decadent New Year’s Eve, 1905, opening scene, to the finale, as Gable, MacDonald, Tracy, and, apparently, most of the survivors of the earthquake and fire march to a hilltop, vowing to build a ‘better’ city, and singing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”, as they view the smoking ruins, which dissolves into the ‘modern’ San Francisco of 1936.

Buy,Download, Or Stream San Francisco! Click Here

Corny? Certainly! But undeniably rousing, as well!

The ‘Special Features’ are excellent, as well; the TNT documentary, “Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Clark Gable”, while glossing over some ’seamier’ chapters of Gable’s life, does offer insights by the daughter he secretly fathered by Loretta Young, and the son he died before ever seeing…and the biography is VASTLY superior to the one offered in the “Gone with the Wind” Special Edition. An ‘alternate ending’ is barely different from the actual one, other than offering more views of the city, but the 1936 MGM cartoon (”Bottles”) is astonishingly well-crafted and gorgeous in Technicolor, and two Technicolor ‘TravelTalk’ short features, from 1940, on San Francisco, and Treasure Island, at the time of the 1939-40 World Exposition, are both very entertaining and a visual ‘time machine’ back to a simpler era.

This is a wonderful DVD, certainly worth owning!

From the mid 20s till the mid 50s, METRO-GOLDWYN MAYER(MGM) boasted they had more stars than there are in the heaven. MGM was the first studio to release a film with more than two stars(it was in 1932 – the Academy Award winning GRAND HOTEL starring Garbo, Beery, Crawford and Lionel Barrymore). SAN FRANCISCO proved to be one of the finest that ever came out of Hollywood. 3 Stars; Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald and Spencer Tracy; strong story containing drama, music, song, romance A N D disaster; set decorations by Cedric Gibbons, special effects that has never dated, realistic scenes from ol`Frisco, though everything was shot in the MGM studios at Culver City. SAN FRANCISCO is a film that will never lose its appeal because of all these ingredients. This film is a MUST-SEE. One of the best that was ever made.

This great movie was previously only available on DVD as a “bare-bones” edition — a non-anamorphic presentation of the movie, with only a trailer and no real extras. But with this release, the film finally gets the Special Edition treatment!

The special features for this disc will reportedly include a new anamorphic transfer, both a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound track AND a DTS 5.1 sound track, an audio commentary by director John McTiernan, a “Beneath the Surface” featurette (new interviews with Alec Baldwin, James Earl Jones, screenwriter Larry Ferguson and producer Mace Neufeld) and the theatrical trailer. Not TONS in the way of extras, but certainly a lot more than what was on the previous edition.

And for you Tom Clancy fans, Paramount has also announced “The Jack Ryan Special Edition DVD Collection” for release on the same day this disc is released, May 6th. The box set will include the new Special Editions of “The Hunt for Red October”, “Patriot Games”, “Clear and Present Danger”, and “The Sum Of All Fears”… each with new bonus material, new anamorphic transfers and both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 sound. (The movies will be available separately as well as in the 4-disc box set.)

As for my review of “Hunt For Red October”:

Personally… and I’m sure that Harrison Ford fans will lambast me for this… I think that Alec Baldwin made the best Jack Ryan in the series. At least, he fit my own personalized vision of the character as I was reading the book better than Ford did. “The Hunt For Red October” is also far and away the best movie based on a Tom Clancy book and follows the SPIRIT of the book more closely than any of the others. Sure, they took some liberties with the details of the story, but they got the broad strokes absolutely dead-on correct. What movie based on a thick, highly technical, politically complex book could possibly match it exactly scene for scene???

One of the thrilling things for me when I watch this film is seeing INTELLIGENT characters actually THINKING their way through problems. There are political, personal and technical issues that many of the characters are forced to deal with, and it is a joy to watch — for example — Alec Baldwin’s Jack Ryan using his MIND and not his fists to get into and out of situations. This movie is defenitely a thinking man’s action film.

But that is not to say that this isn’t an exciting movie with lots of plot twists, and some of the best submarine battles ever put into a movie. And to top all that off, you get Sean Connery AND the underrated Sam Neil as the “villains”, and James Earl Jones in a superb supporting role. This is also directed by one of the best action-film directors working today, John “Die Hard” McTiernan (although I don’t know WHAT he was thinking with the “Rollerball” remake). What more could you want in an action film?

SOME TRIVIA: Star Trek fans take note, that is Gates (Dr. Beverly Crusher) McFadden in a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo role as Jack Ryan’s wife at the beginning of the movie. … People in and around Portland, Oregon may be interested to know that the “Russian” submarine that breaches the water towards the end of the film is actually an American submarine called the USS Blueback which is retired and on permanent display for public tours at OMSI, the Portland science building.

Now this is a movie worth watching. “The Hunt for Red October” has such a superb casting with actors Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill, James Earl Jones, Richard Jordan, Joss Ackland, and more.

Under the command of Captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), a technologically superior Soviet nuclear sub, the “Red October”, is heading for the U.S. coast. When the American government hears this, they immediately jump to the conclusion that the Russians are planning to attack the United States. But then strangely enough, they find out that the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find the “Red October”: there orders, to sink the submarine! The Americans are told that they think that Ramius is mad and that he’s going to shoot nuclear missiles into America so of course, the American government agrees to help the Soviet hunt the “Red October” to stop him. But a lone CIA analyst, Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin), has a different idea that he thinks that Ramius is planning to defect but he has only a little time to be able to prove it with the reluctant help of Cammander Bart Mancuso (Scott Glenn). The hunt is on!!

On my list of favorite movies ever, “The Hunt for Red October” measures up to such submarine movies such as “Run Silent, Run Deep” with Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster and “U-571″ with Matthew McConaughey. This movie is based on Tom Clancy’s bestseller and you have to admit, he was a genius in writing this story.

I love the acting done by not only Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, but also of Sam Neill as Vasily Borodin, Scott Glenn as the Commander, and naturally James Earl Jones as Admiral James Greer. My favorite parts are probably the very last 40 minutes (of which I won’t tell what happens because I don’t want to give anything away to anyone who hasn’t watched this movie yet) and the parts where National Security Advisotor Jeffrey Pelt (Richard Jordan) and Amabassador Andrei Lysenko (Joss Ackland) and talkint to each other. And the whole movie has very subtle humor which I like.

Watch “The Hunt for Red October” and if you like it, I also recommend other submarine movies such as “Run Silent, Run Deep” and “U-571″.

This movie was hilarious–to me. But I was a member of that generation. Big afro, platform shoes and “hot pants.” Being a bourgeois black pronouncing my E’s and R’s, I made them cringe when I said the N-word. So this movie was terribly funny to me. My hat’s off to Malcolm Lee for having the courage to make such a film. One IMDB reviewer who complained of having been offended by white jokes doesn’t have any idea of just how offensive a great deal of this was to some black viewers. Suggesting that all types of black men, no matter how hip and politically savvy, fantasize about white women took guts. Many people, especially younger ones will not see the humor. But I laughed all the way through it. All power to the people. Right on, my brother.

If you’re a fan of those ’70s blaxploitation movies like “Shaft”, “Black Caesar”, or “Foxy Brown”, then this send-up movie will be drop-dead hilarious. But, even if you don’t like those kind of films, this is still one smart comedy worth a look. The movie uses the blaxsploitation style as a springboard to discuss racial stereotyping. And guess what? It WORKS!

Right from the opening credits with the ’70s styling and retro alphabet they used, right through to the the few comedy snippets in the closing credits (stay and watch how Undercover Brother parks his car!), the movie will have you hooked and keep you hooked.

A cross between those ’70s movies, James Bond, and even a touch of “Naked Gun”, “Undercover Brother” really delivers the laughs, as the pure 1970’s retro and funky Undercover Brother joins up with the BROTHERHOOD to stop the evil plans of “The Man” and his henchmen. Billy Dee Williams plays a Colin Powell-like war hero who is in line to become the first black President before The Man steps in to stop him, and James Brown cameos.

What makes the movie work so well is that, instead of getting all PC and shying away from racial stereotypes, the film throws them right in your face to show just how stupid they are. Another thing I like is that the film does not just center on the stereotypes that white people have; stereotypes that black people have about whites get — er, equal treatment, so to speak. This gives the film an even-handed approach, where most filmmakers would have just tried to get mileage out of ’70s jokes, or jokes aimed at white people.

I noted that the audience was equally mixed at the showing I went to see, and the African Americans laughed just as hard as me, if not harder. Even as a white guy, I got a real kick out of Undercover Brother and the BROTHERHOOD as they were “takin’ it to The Man”, and you will, too.

Smart comedies are pretty rare these days, so either get thee to the theater, or wait and get the DVD! You’ll want to keep this one!

I am not a fan of WIP (Women-In-Prison) movies. Generally I find them numbingly boring and falling far short of their sensationalistic claims. My preference in WIP movies is for hard and nasty scenes. Oswaldo De Oliveira’s “Bare Behind Bars” goes the opposite route, highlighting camp and comedy. Given its limitations, it is still miles above the normal drivel. However, like other WIP movies, it doesn’t live up top its promise of “brutal beatings, steamy showers, vicious violence and savage sexuality.”

It is more laugh-out-loud funny than erotic. It is very tongue-in-cheek and doesn’t take itself seriously for an instant. The acting is deliberately bad, over-the-top and cartoonish. And that is actually its saving grace, because it makes you laugh at the silliness of it all. Just sample the scene of the horny inmates using a makeshift pulley to slowly winch a dildo in between their cells at night. Or the wacky ether-addicted nurse who tries to take the Warden’s blood pressure by wrapping the cuff around her neck. Or her buttock-grinding scene with her inmate lover which culminates with her introduction of the infamous pineapple dildo.

Thankfully the women in this prison are almost all deliciously hot and spend most of the time happily naked. And that includes the guards. My favorite here is the blond second-in-command. Sadly she doesn’t have a sex scene of her own. To top it off, this version comes with hardcore elements fully integrated into the whole. On the downside, most of the scenes which should have been sleazy or degrading are here played only for laughs. The two “full-cavity searches” are more funny than erotic. The whipping scenes are so mechanical and perfunctory as to be devoid of any eroticism. The “steamy showers” are more like shower parties. The only violence of real standing are the two instances of sliced penises, one thrown to the dog, the other stuffed into its former owner’s mouth. Now, that was worth watching.

The X-rating is justified. We are treated to blowjobs, dildo insertions, strapon action, amd full penetrative sex.

Blue Underground has done a beautiful restoration of this 25 year old film and presents it in its original widescreen aspect of 1.66:1 with anamorphic enhancement. Colors are rich, vibrant and accurate. The picture is sharp and richly detailed. Only an English-dub mono soundtrack has been provided. No other soundtracks are included although the actors are most likely speaking Portuguese and poor lip-synching is very evident throughout. Offering less than what was advertised and less than what I expected, it nevertheless was a fun and enjoyable romp. As a piece of camp cinema it’s definitely worth at least a rental.

I’m very familiar with WIP flicks because I know Pam Grier has done a few of them herself. In no way have I heard of writer/director Oswaldo de Oliveira before. As the title would entail, Bare Behind Bars is a women’s prison movie, but as it would further entail, it’s also one of the smuttiest women’s prison movies I’ve ever seen. Not satisfied with mere sexploitation, Bare Behind Bars goes so far as to make the occasional brief foray into hardcore porn. That alone should tell you that coherence of plot is not exactly this movie’s strong suit. In fact, you probably won’t notice that there’s a plot at all except in retrospect, after it’s all over.

For the most part “Bare Behind Bars” is just one long, constant parade of casual nudity, lesbianism, and sadistically sexualized degradation, with the occasional hardcore hetero coupling to break things up a little. It’s also one long, constant parade of absurdities. Some of the latter are plainly both deliberate and parodic, as with practically every scene involving Nurse Barbara. Others just as obviously owe their existence to Oliveira’s treatment of Bare Behind Bars as a porno movie; in the proud skin-flick tradition, nearly any interaction between two characters can turn sexual at any time, whether or not it makes the slightest bit of sense for it to do so. But by far the most entertaining are those times when the movie lapses into ridiculousness simply because Oliveira is apparently completely untroubled by either illogic or inanity.

This film is at its most childish whenever the scene shifts to the exercise yard and if you pay attention to the extras in the background. You’ll swear you’re watching recess at a girls’ school for the mentally handicapped– I’d love to have been there to hear the direction Oliveira gave to all those young women running around in circles and wordlessly squealing at the top of their lungs without pause or apparent pattern. The several shower scenes are mostly similar in character, except there the girls are naked and eventually lay off the splashing and gamboling in favor of pawing each other and rolling around together on the filthy floor. Note that they don’t stop squealing, however. It’s a wonder the staff manages to settle them down for the Carnival mass! The final phase of the movie is by far the most shocking, for in marked contrast to the norm in such films, I’m honestly not sure what to make of it. One naturally hesitates to attribute any sort of editorial agenda to a women’s prison movie, let alone one that is not just resolutely pornographic, but occasionally even hardcore about it. But throughout Bare Behind Bars, Oswaldo Oliveira makes it perfectly plain that he’s sending up the genre by carrying it several steps beyond its logical extreme

Other then that this film could have used more focus but it’s a rare treat to stumble upon a movie that can be so vapidly sleazy and so unsettlingly mean-spirited at the same time. Recommended highly to those who are interested in WIP flicks.
