PERSONA may well be Ingmar Bergman’s most complex film–yet, like many Bergman films, the story it tells is superficially simple. Actress Elizabeth Volger has suddenly stopped speaking in what appears to be an effort to cease all communication with the external world. She is taken to a hospital, where nurse Alma is assigned to care for her. After some time, Elisabeth’s doctor feels the hospital is of little use to her; the doctor accordingly lends her seaside home to Elisabeth, who goes there with Alma in attendance. Although Elisabeth remains silent, the relationship between the women is a pleasant one–until a rainy day, too much alcohol, and Elisabeth’s silence drives Alma into a series of highly charged personal revelations.

It is at this point that the film, which has already be super-saturated with complex visual imagery, begins to create an unnerving and deeply existential portrait of how we interpret others, how others interpret us, and the impact that these interpretations have upon both us and them. What at first seemed fond glances and friendly gestures from the silent Elisabeth are now suddenly open to different interpretations, and Alma–feeling increasingly trapped by the silence–enters into a series of confrontations with her patient… but these confrontations have a dreamlike quality, and it becomes impossible to know if they are real or imagined–and if imagined, in which of the women’s minds the fantasy occurs.

Ultimately, Bergman seems to be creating a situation in which we are forced to acknowledge that a great deal of what we believe we know about each other rests largely upon what we ourselves project upon them. Elisabeth’s face and its expressions become akin to a blank screen on which we see our own hopes, dreams, torments, and tragedies projected–while the person behind the face constantly eludes our understanding. In this respect, the theme is remarkably well-suited to its medium: the blankness of the cinema screen with its flickering, endless shifting images that can be interpreted in infinite ways.

Bergman is exceptionally fortunate in his actresses here: both Liv Ullman as the silent Elisabeth and Bibi Anderson as the increasingly distraught Alma offer incredible performances that seem to encompass both what we know from the obvious surface and what we can never know that exists behind their individual masks. Ullman has been justly praised for the power of her silence in this film, and it is difficult to imagine another actress who could carry off a role that must be performed entirely by ambigious implications. Anderson is likewise remarkable, her increasing levels of emotional distress resounding like the waves upon the rocks at their seaside retreat. And Bergman and his celebrated cinematographer Sven Nykvist fill the screen with a dreamlike quality that is constantly interrupted by unexpected images ranging from glimpses of silent films to a moment at which the celluloid appears to burn to images that merge Ullman and Anderson’s faces into one.

As in many of his films, Bergman seems to be stating that we cannot know another person, and that our inability to know is our greatest tragedy. But however the film is interpreted, it is a stunning and powerful achievement, one that will resonate with the viewer long after the film ends. On a technical note, I recommend the MGM video release (and am astonished that the film is not available on DVD as yet); although the subtitles have moments of what is clearly poor translation, they are easy to read. I cannot recommend this film too strongly.

This is one of Bergman’s most challenging psychological studies ever. It asks (or rather inspires the viewer to ask) radical questions about personality, identity and character by presenting a woman who one day just stops living her life; stops talking, working or responding to others. This rejection of both self and society poses a threat to others who don’t know how to interpret what is going on and can’t ask her directly. Is your identity (”persona”) something you are–a personal soul or essence? Is it something you choose to do (a series of actions)? Is it a role forced on you by society and culture? All Bergman fans should have a copy of this film. It is at least as essential as *The Seventh Seal* and much more important than anything he did in the 70s and 80s. Many of his films are about the silence or non-existence of God; but *Persona* dares to show us a world in which we are not even sure that people truly exist.

This is one of my favorite Elmo videos! I know, I got it for my now 17 month old daughter a few months ago, but it’s one I can either crash in the recliner to watch with her, or leave her to watch it while I do dishes, straighten up, etc. My daughter loves anything musical, and this has fun, catchy little ditties from beginning to end! We rotate this one with several other Elmo videos–for mom and dad’s benefit, not the little one’s! (she could watch it every day!) If you have a little Elmo fan in the house, you MUST own this video!

It would have been nice if CTW had put more than one 30 min video onto the DVD version at least, like they do with Bear in the Big Blue House DVDs, where they let you play one or all three as you choose. No separate sing-along-songs section either. I would expect more from the DVD version. Barney DVDs too are so feature filled! Other than that, its wonderful — the segments are tied together by Elmo needing an entry for an art show, and are flashbacks tied to various pictures he has drawn. There are many really nice songs on it — ” One fine face ” sung with Ernie, Happy Tappin with Elmo, Five Jive, Elmo’s song and so on. They are so catchy and fun, we can’t stop dancing/playing along with the songs. The DVD version is great for an instant encore on our favorite segments :-) If your child is timid, you might want to watch the especially the section with Julia Roberts in it with baby on your lap the first few times, since Elmo and Julia “scare” each other.

Kipper has been a great love at our house since my 3 year old son was 18 months. The “Kipper- Imagine That” video does have one strange and rather freaky story in it- it starts with the characters finding a secret door that leads them off into darkness. Eventually, they end up a desert-like land where a scary dragon pops out of a crater at them! It scared the daylights out of my son, who insists on fastforwarding through that entire episode. The other stories are your typical gentle Kipper and friends.

My 22 month old son and I LOVE Kipper. The shorts included in this video showcase Kipper and his friends in all sorts of situations where they rely on their imaginations to have fun. It’s also longer than most kids’ videos–a full hour–and if you can wade through the seemingly endless promos for other videos at the beginning of the tape, you’ll fall in love with Kipper, just like we did.

Gregory Peck stars as Lt. Joseph Clemons, who in the spring of 1953 leads Company K of the 7th U.S. Infantry in a bloody frontal assault on “Pork Chop Hill”, which has been recently captured and occupied by Red Chinese troops. The Real Joseph Clemons, who’d attacked the heavily-defended hill with 135 men and had retaken it with only 28 of his men surviving, served as technical advisor throughout the filming of “Pork Chop Hill”. Gregory Peck gave one of his best performances as Lt. Clemons, and throughout his career he often played officers in war movies (”Guns of Navarone”, “Twelve O’Clock High”, “The Purple Plain”, “Captain Newman, M.D.”, etc.).

Director Lewis Milestone, who’d already directed the World War 1 masterpiece “All Quiet on the Western Front” as well as the underated World War II classic “A Walk in the Sun”, made “Pork Chop Hill” perhaps the definitive Korean War film, and wisely chose to cast many unknown actors (with the exception of Gregory Peck of course) in an attempt to create a more believable war movie. The battle scenes were superb and grimly realistic, and the friendly fire, lack of reinforcements, and inaccurate communication system were all portrayed correctly. It’s hard to believe that this excellent and realistic movie was completed in just 40 days. In short, the acting, directing, and filming couldn’t have been better.

The MGM dvd of “Pork Chop Hill” has an awesome picture and sound quality, and the bonus features include the original trailer as well as an eight-page booklet with plenty of historical trivia and behind-the-scenes info. “Pork Chop Hill” is a grim portrait of the absurdity and tragedy of war and is a definite must-see for every American.

“Pork Chop Hill” from 1959 is a grim but riveting look at an actual battle, near the close of the Korean War. Lewis Milestone, who already had left quite a distinguishable mark on Hollywood, directed this, his third entry into what may be considered his anit-war trilogy. “All Quiet on the Western Front”(1930), his academy award winning look at the horrors of WWI, and “A Walk In the Sun” made in 1945, his WWII entry, were the first two.

Gregory Peck stars as Lt. Joe Clemons, who is ordered to lead an Army Company to hold “Pork Chop Hill”. The hill is insignificant to the outcome of the war, and not only that, but the war is all but over. Knowing this, the men are not exactly gung-ho to risk their lives. They are pinned down and outnumbered by the enemy, shells going off all around, they lack water, food, medical supplies, communication is practically nil, and were also taunted by psychologically destructiove messages, broadcasted by the Chinese. There was great loss and sacrifice of life and limb, yet the powers that be, commanded they “hold that hill”. And so they did.

War Buffs and Film Buffs alike will well appreciate the authenticity of the battle, and the superb way it was shot. The black and white cinematography, adds to the starkness and bleakness of the situation these infintry men faced. Peck turns in a masterful performance and the film is also known for so many young talented actors involved that would go on to be stars and great character actors. The cast includes, George Peppard, Harry Guardino, Rip Torn, Woody Strode, Martin Landau, Harry Dean Stanton, and Robert Blake(who oddly enough can’t seem to find his gun). And that is just to name a few.

It’s an eye opener and wonderful tribute to these Korean War Heroes, who didn’t get quite the attention or accolades of those from other wars. A must have addition to your Gregory Peck, or great war films collection.

Enjoy…Laurie

WAIT BEFORE BUYING, SPONGEBOB SEASON 1 IS COMING, SO ALL OF THE DVD’S RELEASED CONTAINING RANDOM EPSODES WILL BE, WELL “USELESS”, SO WAIT FOR SEASON 1 TO COME AND HAVE A SEASON COLLECTION OF SPONGEBOB!

I was really hoping Tide and Seek would include my favorite episode of all time, Neptunes Spatula, but it redeems itself by including Squidsville. Out of many great moments in the Spongebob series, the scene where Squidwards face goes from smile to frown, is pure genius in animation of any kind. Many write Spongebob off as fluff but those that know are aware of the cast’s greatness in writing.
The best of the DVD’s is still Nautical Nonsense (the first). With SB-129, Texas, and The Graveyard Shift, it’ll be hard to beat. I’d put Halloween second. Scardey Pants, Frankendoodle, and Band Geeks are terrific. I’d probably place Tide and Seek in after these two.
Now if Neptunes Spatula and Krusty Crab Training Video are on the next one, one of those top two are going down.

Cool title, neat cover, Tor, looks like a winner, right? Don’t be fooled. I love Robot Monster, Kronos, Colossal Man (BTW, why is this not on DVD?), etc., and truly believe that Ed Wood Jr. is a far superior filmmaker to Lucas, Speilberg, et al., but even for a fan of this kind of thing, this one is excruciating. By all means buy it for the cover so friends will think you’re outre hip or whatever, but do not actually watch it or you will hate yourself. I’m writing this to help people. Ignore at your own risk!

The theatrical trailer proclaims that this 1961 schlock-fest was “filmed ENTIRELY on location in Yucca Flats!” How’s that for an endorsement? Actually, the trailer is far superior to this dreary attempt at Z-grade science-fiction, with no synchronized dialogue but more voiceover narration than any movie in history. “The Beast of Yucca Flats” does not belong in the “so bad it’s funny” category – it’s just plain bad. Recommended only to fans of Tor Johnson.

Growing up in the 70,s was a great time for watching Saturday morning cartoons. I remember waking up every Saturday morning to watch ” The Land Of The Lost. ” In the beginning when the life raft goes over the waterfall was so exciting and fun it was just like watching it yesterday, If you buy the complete series, anyone who knows or likes this 70’s great piece of history will love to have this in their movie library like our family, It gives me a chance to share with my boys a little piece of my life, They love watching these little short stories about what it might be like to be in another time when giant lizards and funny looking creatures walked the planet. Have Fun Watching With Your Boys, It really hits home, Sean B.

Blast! I thought I was getting a good deal, but instead this set does not include any of the single season bonus features, just a preveiw of the new movie wich I could care less about. Also, seasons 2 and 3 are each crammed on to 2 discs instead of 3,which means slightly lesser quality. Season 1 is still 3 discs. That’s 7 discs, not 8 like it says above. I’m sending this back and getting the season sets. Then again, may be I’ll keep it and compare picture quality,it’s from a different studio.

It’s been a long time since a movie surprised me like “Crossing Over” did. I’ll be honest, I didn’t know much about this movie, other than it starred one of my favorite actors, Harrison Ford, and that it tackled the immigration issue. I expected a decent movie and Ford doing his usual great performance. But what I found was a riveting moving drama with superb acting from a very talented ensemble cast! What a fantastic movie and one I HIGHLY recommend. Watching this movie, I was reminded of other ensemble movies with weaving story lines such as “Magnolia” and “Traffic”. I consider myself a serious movie buff and not an easy critic but this movie really won me over and I consider it one of the best movies I’ve seen in quite a while. Don’t miss this one!!

This is realism at its best! With immigration issues more current than ever this movie addresses the growing immigration and the often sad human destinies involved – not only among the immigrants but also among the very government agencies and bodies ment to manage the situation.

Having outgrown Harrison Ford movies (typecast for decades) as I left my teenage years my expectations were very moderate as I entered the theatre – did I turn out to be wrong again!

Harrison Ford delivers a solid performance but the movie is so much more than him – in fact most of the other characters are delivering excellent performances – and refreshingly all are depicted in a shade of grey – rather than black and white as we have come accustomed to from Hollywood for decades. It brings back sweet memories of American Beauty in this department…. in itself something I for one have been longing for for a long time.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Crossing Over! Click Here

The storyline resembles another excellent movie, Crash, in its shifting between multiple stories which in the end turn out to be intertwined and Grand Torino in its coverage of the immigration issue but with far superior acting and plot. In fact particularly the acting of the immigrants were excellent and far superior to the appauling Vietnamese actors in Grand Torino.

At times a bit depressing but also heartwarming and certainly a must see movie.

Movie Title: The Insider
Average customer review:

The Insider is available for streaming or downloading.

“The Insider”, a theatrical delight, is a well cast, brilliantly acted, and ingeniously directed movie. I cannot say enough about this film!

Russell Crowe is pheonominal as the socially-conscious scientist,Dr. Jeffrey Weigand. Mr. Crowe, one of my favorite actors since first seeing him in “L.A. Confidential”, brings multiple dimensions to his character. One the one hand you applaud Dr. Weigand for being so courageous in spite of the threats he receives from “big tobacco”. On the other hand, you sense his pain, and the fear he has for his family. It is all in the eyes- Russell Crowe emotes like few actors can. WE WILL BE PULLING FOR HIM ON OSCAR NIGHT!

While Russell Crowe is truly the star in this film, one certainly cannot overlook the outstanding performance turned in by Al Pacino. Mr. Pacino lives up to this movie’s expectations, and provides wonderful depth in his character. The pure sarcasm in several of his lines leaves you laughing inside, while silently saying to yourself, “you know, this guy has a point!” Watching Al Pacino is a delight- and in the end, you hope he not only wins the right to produce TV as he sees fit, you are hoping that his character gets a raise! Al Pacino- you are not worthy of a “supporting actor” nomination, you are in a class all your own!

Lastly, we cannot forget the performance of a veteran actor, Christopher Plummer. Mr. Plummer shows sides of Mike Wallace that you imagined were there, but have never been able to see. Mr. Plummer gives the movie perspective- and plays the depressive Mike Wallace with stunning accuracy. In the end, you forget that Mr. Plummer is an actor- you begin to think that the real Mike Wallace is the true actor! I will be looking for more good things to come from Mr. Plummer- he has made me a fan!

This movie is as put together as it can get. The cinematography, direction, etc. give this film power. There are no lulls- you remain firmly entrenched in the plot throughout this movie. The sets, the tone, the music, it all blends together like a great cup of coffee- warm and enjoyable. Michael Mann reels you in, and does not let go. He takes you on a wild ride- your heart races, your eyes tear, your palms sweat, and you squirm in your seat. He does his job, and he does it well- he MOVES you.

This story of one former tobacco scientist taking on big tobacco in an effort to bring awareness of health hazzards to the general public via television, will go down as a modern-day classic. The “behind-the-scenes” look at TV production, and more specifically, “60 Minutes”, gives the general viewer an idea of not only how much time is spent producing a 15-minute segment for network TV, but shows the consequences on a man’s life for being brave enough to care. I applaud Jeffrey Weigand, a hero to America. I also applaud the makers of “The Insider” , for having the courage, stamina, and awe-inspiring vision to bring this film to life.

This movie is riveting, engaging, and extremely well done. The performances by Crowe, Pacino, and Plummer are especially sharp and on edge, and the direction by Mann is,as always, simply superb. From the opening frames illustrating the cache, access and raw power a TV program like Sixty Minutes offers its producers and stars to the immediately introduced suspenseful counterpoint of Philip Wigand as a man caught in a terrible moral dilemma, this movie is absolutely terrific.

While one relates to Russell Crowe’s superb depiction (truly an Oscar-caliber performance) as the man who almost singlehandedly eventually breaks the back of the tobacco conglomerates, I found myself also captivated by Al Pacino’s performance with a thoughtful and emotional coda as a smart and street savvy TV producer skating hellbent for leather over the dangerous edges between his personal morality and the seductive but corrupting pressures of a super-competitive and absolutely testosterone-crazy TV program. Likewise, Christopher Plummer’s interpretation of Mike Wallace as an egotistical and morally obtuse dilletante who perhaps has stayed at the party overlong is a joy to observe. If it is at all accurate, maybe it’s time to finally retire, Mike!

This is a movie that explores the way in which all the powers that be seem to be growing deaf, dumb, and blind to the rights and needs of the individuals in the society, as Wigand finds out quite quickly, to his despair. He finds himself compromised no matter which way he turns, and in an absolutely riveting scene played to the hilt, decides to do what’s morally right regardless of the personal consequences. This seemed to be one of the quiet messages imbedded in the movie, that we all need to be more moral and have more intergrity in how we approach ourselves, each other, and the world at large. Amen to that, brother Mann.

Nice to see such extraordinary every-day heroism depicted and lauded on the silver screen. of course, life is never so simple as when it is most complex, and this movie certainly deals with some very controversial issues in an engaging, provocative, and thoughtful story we all can enjoy and learn from. This is a serious, disturbing, and dramatic movie I want to own and pull off the shelf periodically to watch and think about. I think you’ll appreciate it too.
