Summertime pairs Hepburn with Italian hunk Rossano Brazzi in a delicious, sad, funny and ultimately very adult film about a Plain Jane who finds romance in Venice. Hepburn is a joy to watch here as she gets to show so many facets of her character. Jane Hudson is socially self-assured; she has a funny quip for every occasion and she’s not afraid to speak her mind; she really is the quintessential American spinster of the early 20th century. She has a romantic side that longs for moonlight trysts in a gondola, dancing at midnight, and coffee and small-talk with her lover in a sidewalk café, but there’s an element of prudishness which holds her back from a love affair with a married Venetian who assures her that he and his wife have an “understanding.” Ultimately Jane recognizes that she’s not likely to get her dream of love intact and that she’d be a fool not to take the one on offer, and she blossoms into the happy, loving, passionate woman she (and the viewer) always suspected she could be.

Brazzi as Renato is earnest and handsome, and while he’s no great shakes as an actor, he does persuade us. After all, we want to be persuaded, don’t we? Just like Jane Hudson, we want to believe that even after half a lifetime of loneliness and disappointment, love is possible. There are some nice supporting roles here, particularly a young Darrin McGavin as a self-involved artist, and Mari Aldon as his trophy wife who isn’t quite as dumb as she first seems. There are a few bits of business that seem forced, such as the loud, insensitive American tourists – perhaps this sort of characterization has become so clichéd that what was new in 1955 seems awkward and heavy-handed now – and Jane’s friendship with a street urchin who cadges cigarettes from her. On the other hand, Isa Miranda gives a lovely, low-key performance as the owner of the pensione where Jane is staying. If Jane is the quintessential American spinster, then Signora Fiorina is the essence of a worldly European woman of “a certain age.”

Don’t look for a syrupy, artificially happy ending here; Jane returns to her old life, her real life, if you will, in spite of the happiness she’s known with Renato because she is a practical woman and this was, after all, just a summertime fling.

Venice has never been more beautiful; Katherine Hepburn has never been more poignant, and Rosanno Brazzi has never been sexier. And this DVD version of the film captures the Techni-colors in ways they’ve not been seen since the film was released in the mid-50s. What’s surprising about seeing the film today (for anyone with a knowledge of where screen morals were in the 50s) is the fact that it deals with adultery in a way that was rarely seen in its time. Spinster Hepburn goes off to romantic Venice, sort-of-but-not-quite looking for love, and when she finds it, it’s with a middle-aged, married man. While she doesn’t “get the guy” in the end, she isn’t “punished for her transgression” either. It seems a miracle that the Church allowed such a movie to be made in the 50s–and in Italy no less. Watch this in a double bill with “Roman Holiday” and you’ll be booking a flight to Italy before the end credits finish rolling.

No movie that I see on a regular basis makes me feel so powerfully the joy of being alive as this one. Although many films and numberless and sappy television shows since 1987 have used angels of one dreadful sort or another, Wim Wenders managed to success while all the others failed. Working from a story by celebrated writer Peter Handke, Wenders takes angels that seem to have more in common with Rilke’s Duino Elegies than the Bible or the New Age angels. Their function is to watch and observe and record, and in their own limited fashion, to comfort and commiserate. The trick wasn’t to come up with the gimmick of angels being able to listen to the thoughts of humans, but to make those thoughts beautiful and representative of all that is quintessentially human. The trick wasn’t to have the angels see in black and white and the humans in color, but in making what was seen, whether two or many toned, beautiful. One has only to see the absolutely appalling CITY OF ANGELS, an English language remake starring Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage, to see that having gimmicks isn’t enough; you must have substance as well.

This is not a perfect film. There are some dull moments, and I thoroughly dislike a couple of moments in the film, in particular, Dommartin’s speech to Bruno Ganz in the bar near the end of the film. But there are so many magnificent moments, so many moments where they not merely get something right, but produce a moment of almost transcendent beauty, that WINGS OF DESIRE provides more than entertainment, but something akin to a reason to live. The movie becomes in the end a celebration of life, of all the tawdry elements that go into being human. The movie ends in affirming nearly as many things as Walt Whitman does in “Song of Myself.”

I love the cast. Bruno Ganz is perfect as Damiel, the central angel of the story. Likewise, Otto Sander’s face is the perfect receptacle for all that he witnesses on his silent rounds through Berlin, while Solveig Dommartin is so sympathetic a character, so lovely, that one could imagine an angel or anyone else yearning to be with her. And Peter Falk turns in a remarkably quirky character role, playing himself on location in Berlin. The city itself emerges as a major actor, providing what is certain to stand as the last great visual representation of Berlin in the last couple of years before the Wall fell. Curt Bois was a veteran character actor who was a staple in Hollywood films in the 1930s and 1940s, playing a vast number of waiters and tailors and hotel clerks (he plays the pickpocket at the very beginning of CASABLANCA). In what would be the last role before his death, Bois appropriately plays “Homer,” the ancient man remembering all that had occurred in Berlin in the past several decades, playing the role of human witness to counterbalance the angelic witnesses.

This film and UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD, a Wenders film that followed this one in 1991 have to have two of the best soundtracks I have encountered. Subtract either “Six Bells Chime” by Crime and the City Solution or “From Her to Eternity” by Nick Cave, and this would have been far less of a film, and the scene where Solveig Dommartin changes in her trailer while listening to Nick Cave do “The Carny” might be the best scene in the film.

There are few movies that stay with you long after the credits have rolled and the auditorium lights have come up. This is one of them.

I saw this many years ago in a high school Humanities class and always wanted to purchase it. When it came out on DVD I snagged a copy to finally own. It was as good or better than I remembered it. That was a span of some 15 or so years.

What more can I say? Powerful, evocative, thought provoking, sublime, and deeply, satisfactorily moving. Pure, high artistry and poetry on a short list of classic European films, and on a whole other plain of existence from most American “art” films. A story of Shakespearean grandeur on celluloid.

The images linger, the narration haunts. Black and white and color filmstock are brilliantly utilized in fantastic and complimentary combination used to represent the ethereal and more mundane, Earthbound realms the characters dwell in.

Wings of Desire is arguably filmmaker and music video director Wim Wenders’ finest masterpiece to date. Don’t let “Music Video Director” scare you off. Wim is no Michael Bay or McG. He actually has talent and is very much akin to Spike Jonze in creating fantastical flights of fancy, though with more cerebral and philosophically provoking undertones.

That Wings of Desire is now on Blu-ray in a stunning HD transfer, is something to be celebrated.

This tale of a Christmas-loving dog who tries to help Santa make his deliveries is both cute and innocent enough for young kids and hip enough for their Gen X parents. For example there’s a great line that parodies the “you’re no Jack Kennedy” remark Lloyd Bentsen made to Dan Quayle in the 1988 VP debates. That’s going to go over the head of any kid, but they’ll be wondering why Mommy and Daddy think it’s so funny. And that’s not the only joke snuck in for the grown ups.

With a larcenous penguin as a companion, Olive meets interesting and interestingly-named characters as she heads to the North Pole to save Christmas. This special truly deserved its Emmy nomination and will entertain both you and your kids.

A last bit of trivia: When Drew Barrymore (the voice of Olive) was in Woody Allen’s musical, “Everyone Says I Love You”, she was the only star in it who was able to convince Woody her singing was so bad that she should have a voice double for her songs. That should make it all the more interesting when you get to hear Drew sing in “Olive, The Other Reindeer”.

How could you not love this story? The title alone will make you smile! But then someone got the great idea of animating this story of a small but brave little dog named Olive who jumps at the chance to join Santa’s team of reindeer when Blitzen is injured AND letting Drew Barrymore do the voice of Olive. By the time you recognize the voices of Dan Castallaneta, Ed Asner, Peter MacNichol and Michael Stipe, you realize that they all signed on because this is a quality holiday story. It has been a long time boys and girls since we have had a new one this good to enjoy during the holiday season. Even if you have not enjoyed the charming book by J. Otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh, you will adore the movie. Or visa versa. If you have kids they will want to watch this one over and over, but do not worry about it; you will not mind that one bit.

Arriving with Volume 2 of Chip “N” Dale Rescue Rangers is episodes 28-51 of the series. Included this time is the 5 episode plot, which gives the origins of the Rescue Rangers. Overall there are 24 episodes in this volume, 3 less than the first wave.

Volume 2 has some of the best episodes from the series, but the pilot series is quite frankly enough reason on its own to purchase the volume. Some highlighted episodes include; Gadget goes Hawaiian, Out of Scale, Chipwrecked Shipmunks, Shell Shocked, and A Creep in the Deep. Those are just a few of the classic episodes in this volume.

Devoid of extras once again, however there was a flyer for The Adventures of the Gummi Bears on DVD in the case, but that is all. Still the price is right for many solid episodes and I suggest to any fan of the series or Chip “N” Dale fan to buy this one right away.

For the last set I found it really helpful when someone posted a review containing a list of the episodes included, so I thought I’d extend the same courtesy myself:

Disc 1 contains the original multi-part pilot episode “To The Rescue” as well as

*A Creep In the Deep – a deranged fish vows declares war on the human race and vows to free captive fish everywhere

*Normie’s Science Project – Normie uses his Uncle Nimno’s record player which uses sound to disintegrate objects as a science project

*Seer No Evil – Chip gets a morbid prediction from a psychic at a carnival

Disc 2

*Chipwrecked Shipmunks – The Rangers are wrecked on a tropical island and meet once again with the Pi-Rats, who are looking for a treasure that Monterey and Dale have already found

*When Mice Were Men – The Rangers to go Mexico when Monterey gets a call for help from old friends of his; they are under attack by a giant bull with a personal vendetta against Monterey

*Chocolate Chips – The Rangers vacation in South America where a German man is using zombies to dig up the cacao trees and make chocolate. All of the Rangers except Dale are turned into zombies themselves, and he must save the day and the other Rangers.

*The Last Leprechan – The Rangers go to Ireland where they meet the last leprechan who is being hunted by a Banshee who wants his magical pot of Gold (One of my personal favorites)

*Weather Or Not – The other Rangers think Monterey is crazy when his weather-indicating tail keeps predicting snow; however, Monterey’s tail is out of whack because Nimnoe has created a weather machine and is using it rob banks and jewelry shops.

*One Upsman-Chip – Chip and Dale compete to see who can outwit the other last (”Gotcha last!”) when Chip gets too competitive and Dale ends up in Fat Cat’s clutches.

*Shell Shocked – The Rangers vacation at a beach from which all the shells are conspicuously missing; Fat Cat is using them to simulate the sound of the ocean and attract fish.

*Love Is A Many Splintered Thing – Monterey’s old flame Desiree returns, but is still using Monterey and working for a bad badger crime boss.

Disc 3

*Song of the Night’n'Dale – The Rangers end up in China where they find an Emperor whose sister is going to elaborate methods to convince him that he is crazy.

*Double ‘O’ Chipmunks – After hurting Dale’s feelings, the other Rangers indulge him in his James Bond fantasies and dupe him into thinking that he is solving a case in which he must deliver microfilm. While the Rangers originally gave Dale a regular undeveloped roll of vacation photos, it gets swapped for real microfilm that is being hunted by rat thugs for their evil scientist boss.

*Gadget Goes Hawaiian – While the Rangers vacation in Hawaii, Gadget meets Louwhiney, who looks just like her. Louwhiney tricks Gadget into running survival tests for her, and Gadget learns that she has to choose one plan and stick with it.

*It’s A Bird, It’s Insane, It’s Dale! – Dale finds a piece of Meteor that gives him superpowers but the other half is found by a criminal who steals world monuments and frames Dale.

*Short Order Crooks – Two thugs try to rob a bank through the diner next door, but the Rangers, mistaking them for average Joes, try to help them by making Monterey’s famous cheese chowder.

*Mind Your Cheese and Qs – Monterey’s cheese craving finally catch up with him and he must overcome them in order to save his friends from Rat Capone, who is hoarding all the cheese in town.

*Out of Scale – Chip and Dale are captured by infamous crime boss Ratso Ratskywatsky who gives them as pets to his spoiled daughter Buffy.

*Dirty Rotten Diapers – The Rangers try to bust a criminal who looks like a baby and has set up a series of robberies through a fake adoption agency.

I can only hope Disney will finish off the series with another set soon!

“Old Yeller” is, simply put, one of the greatest films (and books) ever laid on celluloid. If you’re unfamiliar with the story, you don’t know what you are missing. “Old Yeller” tells the story of two boys (expertly played by Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran) who stay on their Texas farm with their mother while their father (Fess Parker) goes on a cattle drive. Yeller shows up and gives the elder brother, Travis Coates (Kirk), quite a bit of trouble until the dog proves his worth by saving everyone in the Coates family in one way or another. Of course, the ending of this heartwarming film is perhaps one of the most depressing in cinematic history, and Tommy Kirk handles his emotions onscreen to perfection.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Old Yeller 2-Movie Collection! Click Here

“Savage Sam,” which is sort of a sequel to “Old Yeller” since it has Travis and little brother Arliss in it, not to mention two other memorable characters (which I’ll get to later). In it, Sam is the Coates’ new dog and much like Yeller, he’s smart, brave, and manages to get into trouble often. Unlike “Old Yeller,” which was more of a study in the relationship between a young boy and his dog, “Savage Sam” plays out more like a Western adventure, full of Injun fightin’, cowboys, and even a touch of romance. Travis, Arliss, and their friend, Lisbeth Searcy (Marta Kristen of “Lost In Space”) are captured by a band of Apache warriors who plan to do who knows what to them. The Coates’ uncle Beck (Brian Keith), Mr. Searcy (Jeff York) from the first film, and a gang that includes, among others, Slim Pickens and Dewey Martin, head out to save the kids. Along the way they pick up Sam, who was thought to be dead. Eventually, Sam picks up the kids’ trail and he leads our heroes to the three captives. The ending of this film is a lot happier than “Old Yeller,” but that ol’ yeller dog set the bar so high that most will consider “Savage Sam” inferior to it. That’s a fair statement, but there are few films out there that aren’t inferior to “Old Yeller.”

Bud Searcy (Jeff York) almost manages to steal both of these films. His proud, lazy, and “always around about dinner time” character is easily the funniest in the lot. Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran act well beyond their young years should allow in this film. Kirk is especially good at conveying the heartwrenching emotions that he feels as he puts Old Yeller to rest. Beverly Washburn portrays young Lisbeth Searcy in “Old Yeller,” but she didn’t return for “Savage Sam.” No reason is given, but Marta Kristen fills the role nicely and the character gets a considerable amount of screen time in “Sam.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Old Yeller 2-Movie Collection! Click Here

The DVD extras are very nice. “Bone Trouble” is a Disney short in which Pluto has a run-in with a neighbor dog over a bone in a mirror funhouse. It’s a nice addition to this set. The real gems here are the features on Don Gipson, author of both “Old Yeller” and “Savage Sam.” Gipson’s son is interviewed on the day that Yeller and Travis are to be enshrined in front of the local library in Mason, TX, where the Gipson clan is from. There’s also interviews with the cast in recent years about the making of the film. In it, Dorothy McGuire, Chuck Connors and Jeff York are fondly remembered by the rest of the original cast. There’s also an intimate look at the Disney film life of Tommy Kirk.

“Old Yeller” is a must-have for any true fan of film and/or Disney. It’s a Western tale that rivals “Shane” as one of the greatest Westerns of all time. “Savage Sam” is also a delight to have, and I’m glad it’s included on this disk.

Highly recommended.

A pair of delightful, classic (in the classic sense of the word) Disney animal stories, and nobody did animal stories betters than Disney. OLD YELLER and SAVAGE SAM are a couple of family safe gems.

OLD YELLER (1957) is the story of a big, barrel chested, half-lab half-mastiff and all big yellow haired mongrel who adopts himself into a farm family some time shortly after the American Civil War, somewhere deep in the heart of rural Texas. As the story opens Pa (Fess Parker) is leaving for the summer to drive and sell cattle for some much needed cash money, leaving Ma (Dorothy McGuire,) teenage son Travis (Tommy Kirk) and six-year-old son Arliss (Kevin Corcoran) to tend the farm in his absence. No sooner has Pa disappeared over the hill when a big yellow dog explodes on the scene, scaring the plowing mule and, a bit later, stealing a hank of middling meat. Travis wants to kill him, for young Arliss it’s love at first sight. Old Yeller’s status is a little shaky until Arliss, one of those kids whose pockets have to be emptied of garter snakes and horny toads before he’s allowed into the cabin, starts playing with a young bear cub far enough away from the cabin to make human rescue impossible. The mama bear and Old Yeller gallop onto the scene at about the same time, and their confrontation is quite exciting. The rescue is enough for the family to accept Yeller into the fold, and in return Yeller will save everyone in the family’s lives at least once. Anyone whose read Fred Gipson’s novel of the same name will be prepared for the serious trouble when `the hydrophoby’ hits the valley. To its credit Disney doesn’t rewrite the tragic ending. Gipson, by the way, also is credited as the screenwriter.

SAVAGE SAM (1963), another Gipson dog story, revisits the Coates family five years on. Kirk and Corcoran, both five years older, are back as Travis and Arliss. This time Ma and Pa are off visiting Ma’s sick mother, Uncle Beck (Brian Keith) drops in on the boys now and then, and the family dog is now Savage Sam, a hound dog (mainly hound, something else is mixed in his blood.) Sam can track just about anything, which comes in handy when he and Arliss go off chasing a egg-stealing bobcat and along with Travis and young Lisbeth Searcy (Marta Kristen,) are kidnapped by a horse-stealing band of Apaches. Sam is hit over the head and left for dead. Sam recovers, though, Uncle Beck organizes a chase party (including Royal Dano, Dewey Martin, and Slim Pickens) and sets out after the kidnapped children. Ultimately, a left-for-dead Travis and a groggy but enthusiastic Sam join the posse.

OLD YELLER is the big `un in this two-pack, but I enjoyed SAVAGE SAM nearly as much. It’s an exciting chase movie, and it doesn’t plumb the tragic depths its predecessor does.

The bonus disk contains a number of specials. A 35-minute special entitled “Old Yeller: Remembering a Classic,” a 2002 talking head documentary featuring a number of the remaining stars (Kirk, Corcoran, Parker, etc.) recalling the making of the movie. Interesting if not deeply informative. A 15-minute “Conversation with Tommy Kirk” pretty much explains it all, with the nearing-60 Kirk recalling his work with Disney. “Ranch of the Golden Oaks” is a 7-minute short about the ranch on which OLD YELLER was filmed – had kind of an infomercial feel to it. There’s a short feature with Gipson’s son celebrating the unveiling of an Old Yellow (and Travis) statue in a small town in Texas. A rebroadcast of a television episode of The Wonderful World of Disney from 1957 entitled `The Best Doggoned Dog in the World” devoted to, you guessed it, dogs. I don’t remember seeing the animated short `Bone Trouble,’ but navigating Disney’s special feature disks is tricky sometimes. The specials were enjoyable enough, gently selling Disney products, emphasizing Old Yeller and pretty much ignoring Savage Sam.

I’d recommend these without hesitation, but the presence of horse stealing, kidnapping indians in SAVAGE SAM is a little beyond the politically correct pale. Even though the kidnappers include a brave who steps in to protect the children a few times, the overall impression is that of scary, lawless savages. Those sensitive to such portrayals may want to watch SAVAGE SAM first before sitting down to it with the whole family.

A lot of people like to criticize the DOOM movie as being a “bad” movie – a classic example of what goes wrong when you try to transport a thread-bare video game plot to the big screen. I’m here to disagree.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doom! Click Here

It’s pretty easy to make the case that DOOM the movie is a terrible translation of DOOM the video game. The core of the “plot” from the game is entirely changed. In the game, irresponsible experiments with matter teleportation in a base on Mars opens a rift between our world, and Hell itself. Hell comes spilling through into our reality, and it’s up to the player as a lone gun-wielding protagonist to mow his way through thousands of zombie humans and hell-spawned demons till he defeats the very forces of Hell. Nothing of that made it into the movie. The similarities are: It takes place on Mars, and there are guns. There is even a teleporter in the plot but it’s simply there as a device to keep the action going quickly between the Mars installation and the final showdown in the bowels of the UAC facility on Earth. No Hell, no demons. This is all replaced by genetic experimentation aimed at creating a “super human” – something the ancient Martians failed at, with similar results.

This fundamental change to the plot of the story was a disappointment, but you know what? Everything else works. The sets look similar to the “feel” of the locations in Doom 3, the genetically altered humans look like a few of the monsters from Doom 3, and there is a hilariously great “first person shooter” sequence that had me smiling like a silly kid. Yeah, there’s some woeful dialog, yeah, there are some lapses in logic (why would a science installation on Mars have a catacombs-style sewer system with the air-space venting directly into the facility itself – that would be one stinky, humid research lab) but overall, the movie is fun, it’s competently made, there are some fun characters, there are some terrific set pieces, and in the end, it’s entertaining.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doom! Click Here

The blu-ray release is a bit late to the party – the was one of the first HD-DVD titles released and it’s taken a while to come out on the “other” HD format. The picture is stunning – dead perfect black levels, zero noise, crisp detail, no artifacting at all. The audio is great – only rarely do the action scenes break down into “noisy chaos” – overall it’s highly detailed and nuanced.

Fans of the game are treated to some “in-jokes”: The names of most of the scientists in the UAC lab are based on the names of the primary developers of the video game – John Carmack, Tim Willits, etc. While most of the weaponry in the movie is standard military type gear, the BFG 9000 from the game makes an appearance in the movie (looking sort of like a V-8 engine with a trigger). The teams names (Sarge, Reaper, etc.) come from another ID game – Quake 3. The “first person shooter” sequence in particular is a shout-out to fans of the genre, and is very well done.

Love it, hate it – it’s a very well produced HD version of the movie, and despite it’s flaws, it’s a very entertaining action movie.

Everyone has mixed feelings on movies based on videogames. But every once in a while there is a good one that shines through the muck. This isn’t that movie. That being said, Doom definitely stands on its own as a movie worth watching.

So long as you watch this movie without expecting anything but a action flick worth laughing at, then you will enjoy this movie. Not too mention the over the top First Person shooter bit at the end of the film. The movie at times gets a bit silly. But that’s where its charm comes in. This is a top dollar B movie.

You will either love it or hate it, but as long as you don’t watch it expecting demons from Hell popping up, you should be fine to give it a chance. I found the scenes with the Rock to be fun and entertaining. While Keith Urban truly gave me a reason to watch his other films after seeing this. There are some excellent one-liners in the movie, some which will haunt me for the rest of my life… But I am glad I saw this movie and am happy to own it on Blu-Ray.

Speaking of Blu-Ray, the transfer is quite good. A definite step up from the DVD, the action doesn’t cause the frame rate to diminish in quality. The sound is as good to be expected in a horror film. All in all, a solid title for what it is. I give it 4 out of 5 stars based on the quality of the film itself rather than the quality of the Blu-Ray.

Take one terrific performance by Richard Attenborough, add the nature of the character he plays, throw in politics, the British Army, mutiny, the end of Empire…and you have a strangely affecting and engrossing film that you may remember for quite awhile.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Guns at Batasi! Click Here

Regimental Sergeant Major Lauderdale (Richard Attenborough) and a detachment of the British Army are based outside Batasi, a town in a newly independent East African nation which had been part of the colonial empire. Lauderdale is at once pompous, narrow-minded, serious and proud. He is a dedicated professional soldier who has reached the top rank for a non-commissioned officer. He presents himself immaculately; he believes in traditions and rules; he is ram-rod straight and can strip hide off a malefactor at the top of his voice. “Now understand this, Wilkes! I can stomach a good soldier whatever his faults. What I can’t stomach are Bolshies, skivers, scrimshankers and bunkhouse barristers. I’ve broken more of them than you’ve had eggs for breakfast!” And he is shrewd at war. He is resourceful and courageous. He knows his business.

A revolt against the government starts and most of the country’s army takes part to overthrow the old and bring in the new. The British officers and NCOs at the base near Batasi are held at gun point in their respective messes. While the local British representatives keep a practical eye peeled for which way the wind is blowing, RSM Lauderdale, alone with only five sergeants and one enlisted man, is determined, in the absence of any officers or instructions, to do his duty. He will not acquiesce to unlawful orders from the rebels. He will not turn over to the rebels a seriously wounded native officer. He will defend the mess and the people in it, including the visiting and opinionated Miss Baker Wise, a member of Parliament played by Flora Robson. When Lauderdale organizes and leads a raid on the base’s arms depot, now controlled by rebel soldiers, to bring arms back to the mess, he has to face a woman whose opinions are as certain as his own. “Has it occurred to you,” Miss Baker Wise says emphatically, “that the rebels, or whatever you choose to call them, were leaving us alone because we were unarmed? What you are doing can only provoke more bloodshed.” “Well, that’s a matter of opinion,” he tells her. “I’m surprised at you, ma’am. I thought you believed in all men being equal.” “Of course I do. That’s precisely the point.” “Well,” RSM Lauderdale tells her firmly, “they had guns and we didn’t. That’s not very equal, is it?”

While Regimental Sergeant Major Lauderdale organizes his sergeants and uses cunning and bluff to hold off a larger and better-armed rebel force, shifts in politics and power take place. He may lead a dangerous excursion with one other man to spike two rapid-fire artillery pieces brought to aim at the mess, but when the rebels win and take over the government, he finds himself more dangerously exposed that any military action would. The end of the movie leaves us with a great deal of respect for this rigid, professional Army man who’s whole life is bound up in the certitudes of duty and tradition.

Attenborough’s performance is extraordinary. At first it seems almost over the top, a comic caricature out of Carry On, Sergeant or Monty Python. During the next 20 minutes you realize that, while he may be smiled at behind his back by his sergeants and casually condescended to by his officers, he has his own dignity which is unshakeable. And for the last 70 minutes you come to realize that if you ever had to take part in a real crisis and battle, you could do far worse than be led by Regimental Sergeant Major Lauderdale.

His sergeants are played by reliable character actors whose faces will be remembered by those who enjoy British movies, Percy Herbit, David Lodge, John Mellon, Graham Stark and Bernard Horsefall. Jack Hawkins plays Colonel Deal, Lauderdale’s colonel and a man who understands that compromises have to be made.

The DVD looks very good. There is a useful commentary by John Leyton, the actor who played the enlisted British soldier. It’s value lies in Leyton’s recollections about Attenborough and how he prepared for the role. Attenborough was, Leyton says, completely the opposite of a regimental sergeant major, but “in character he was spot on.” Guns at Batasi is a well-made movie.

Let me start by saying if you enjoy films such as “The Wild Geese”, “The Hill”(hopefully, it too will be on dvd someday),”Too Late the Hero” or perhaps “Breaker Morant” you will LOVE this film! I know the films I mentioned are depicting warfare in different eras, but they star great british/european actors such as Sean Connery, Michael Cain, Ian Bannen, Edward Woodward etc.. This stars the great Richard Attenborough as the senior sergeant in charge of a group of british non-comms who are trying to maintain order in their compound after control of the country has been turned over to the native government (set in a british colony in africa). The weapons are proper for the time period…sterling smg’s and FN-FALS (brit L1A1). Great drama full of wonderfully stuffy british military etiquette! About time it has been brought out on dvd, it has become almost impossible to find on vhs and they don’t show it on television much anymore. Truly outstanding!

This restored set has some very nice extras and the restoration of the episodes will make you put those PD DVDs in the trash can.

The only complaint is, why only 26 episodes from the 36 episode first season. One of the missing episodes is show #13 “Home For Christmas”, which MPI is putting on a “Christmas with The Beverly Hillbillies & Petticoat Junction” DVD. Unfortunately, it interrupts the flow of the continuing story line. In the pre-Christmas episode the Clampetts are in Beverly Hills. Then jump to the post-Christmas episode and the Clampetts are back home in the hills.

Otherwise we are getting the first 27 episodes, minus the Christmas show, of season 1.

This was the best Scooby movie so far it had it all action, adventure, mystery, and comedy! And most importanly it remained true to the original format with the monster being a fake, the DVD extras are also pretty good and it leaves you wanting to watch it over and over again! Trust me you will not be dissapointed. This is a definite have to buy film!!!

Scooby Doo and the Monster of Mexico was no doubt the weakest of the modern Scooby Doo animated features. Loch Ness Monster is a considerable improvement.

This time the gang head off to Scotland to see the Highland Games and visit Blake castle, Daphne’s ancestral home. And wouldn’t you know, the castle happens to be in the ‘quaint’ fishing village of Drumnadrochit, on the shores of Loch Ness.

During their stay they meet a few interesting folks. First there is Fiona Pembrooke, a scientist who has drowned all of her money into finding the Loch Ness Monster.

Sir Ian Locksley, the boss of the National Heritage Museum of Scotland, he is staunch non-believer of Nessie.

The Haggarts, the own a cozy Inn on the shores of the loch. The sons are a couple of local jokers, always into mischief.

Del Chilman, a wild, paranoid hippie dude who is convinced the monster is out there and will stop at nothing on find her.

And finally, Duncan MacGubbin, the dock master who has seen Nessie too many times to count.

Most of these characters are stereotypes, which gets a bit annoying as this is teaching younger audiences a load of crap and giving the wrong impression. However if you can immune yourself to it you’ll be alright. Being from Scotland I can’t help but wince at the awfully mimicked Scottish accents. Fact: We DON’T sound like that.

Soon enough Nessie, looking rather more demonic than ‘usual’, shows up and causes havoc. Looks like the gang have another mystery on their hands. The usual chase scenes, clues and Shaggy’s wacky disguises follow. There are plenty of laughs. The animation is splendid, with some atmospheric scenes and locations. And the plot a lot better than Monster of Mexico.

The only bad thing this time around is the music. I miss Louis Febre’s scoring and the songs here are pretty rotten too. Where are the Hex Girls when you need ‘em?

The region 2 DVD is in crystal clear 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen (the region 1 ain’t) with Dolby 5.0 sound. Some okay extras are included. Definitely worth getting.
