Ever since a child I have always been excited when these films were shown on TV. I have recieved the first collection and it lives up to expectations, picture quality and sound are excellent. In this third series is one of my favourites, ‘Terror By Night’ again we seem film stock used as in many of the series. If you look carfully at the start there is stock also used in Universals masterpiece ‘The Black Cat’ where there is footage of the train being loaded. With the twelve Universal films being restored to excellent condition all I can hope now is UCLA give the same treatment to the two eariler Fox studios titles ‘The Hound Of The Baskervilles’ and The ‘Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes’. The only gripe we can have with these collections is the lack of DVD extras. If your a fan of Sherlock Holmes, then there is no better than the films made by Rathbone and Bruce.

Four more classic Sherlock Holmes mysteries from the vaults of Universal Studios. Somewhere in the 12 film series, the master detective simply had to solve a mystery within the claustrophic atmosphere of a train (the perfect setting for intrigue), and he does it here in “Terror By Night.” The equally entertaining “Pursuit to Algiers” finds Holmes and Watson on an ocean liner. Despite these novel and exciting settings, the best film in this set is “Woman In Green.” The chauvenistic sleuth was often at his best when matching wits with the opposite sex, but what makes this entry particularly outstanding is the appearance of Henry Daniell as Professor Moriarty. The brilliantly saturnine character actor had already made two appearances in the Holmes series but here he tackles the role he was born to play.

“Dressed to Kill” is the last film in the series and, not surprisingly, it shows signs of fatigue, but Rathbone is as brilliant as ever.

Funimation has to be credited for their ability to drop anime DVD collections in a timely manner. After all, patience may be a virtue but who wants to wait around to find out how a story they’re waist-deep in concludes? Such was the case with Romeo x Juliet. The first collection (known as the Romeo Collection) hit streets on June 23rd and now the concluding set is at our collective disposal as of August 11.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Romeo x Juliet: Juliet Collection, Part 2! Click Here

Romeo x Juliet from Funimation breaks the 24 total episodes into a pair of two-disc sets. The second of which (reviewed here) is known as The Juliet Collection and contains episodes 13-24. Packaged within an appropriately artistically decorated cardboard exterior slipcase is a pair of thin disc cases each containing a single dvd (with 6 episodes on each).

Total runtime comes in at 290 minutes and the show wears a conservative TV PG (13+) rating, based presumably more on the grander adult oriented themes (we do all know how this tale will end) than it is language, sexual scenarios, or gore.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Romeo x Juliet: Juliet Collection, Part 2! Click Here

Language options are standard fair sub & dub meaning the original Japanese dialog track is presented (in stereo) as well as the option of instead watching an English dub (in Dolby Surround 5.1). Finally English subtitles are available with either vocal option.

Extras include an English actor commentary track over Act (episode) 24, textless songs, and a host of Funimation trailers on the second disc.

As was the case with the first collection, the source material here deviates from the original William Shakespeare play while retaining many of the same fundamental concepts of forbidden love, dictatorship governments, and the agony of heartbreak.

In this installment Prince Montague sentences the captured Juliet to death, which of course spurs her faithful comrades into rescue efforts. For simply aiding in Juliet’s escape, Romeo finds himself exiled to the grueling Gradisca mines.

Though ripped apart from one another, both Romeo and Juliet focus their efforts to create a world where they can be together while Juliet cements a Capulet strike against Montague complete with the return of her vigilante alter ego, the Red Whirlwind.

While the human factions battle each other for control, Neo Verona itself is crumbling as Escalus, the tree that supports everything, begins to wither and die beneath their very feet.

Pacing in the show’s second half is much grander in terms of scale and scope when compared to that of the first 12 episodes. The love interest between the title characters definitely blossoms into a more believable/ less forced relationship here even as the underlying chaos that surrounds them builds to a fever pitch.

Without giving away too many spoilers, I will say to expect some of the tragic nature of the source material to not only carry over but to become a literal ultimatum faced by the characters by the show’s dramatic conclusion.

However, I really don’t wish to insinuate that the entire Juliet Collection serves as a funnel to the inevitable conclusion; in fact the truth is quite the contrary. Thanks to the fact that this half of the tale once again consists of a full 12 episodes should hint toward the truth that the voyage is every bit as rewarding as the arrival.

I was particularly moved by the sequences that focused on Romeo’s torture in the mines, as they appear to have been lifted from some of the finer science fiction films of yore and work very well here. Juliet’s isolated plots were a bit drier and more politically under-toned but I suspect some may find this to be the more enjoyable.

Prince Montague’s tyranny really comes into fruition in this installment as well; a credit to Gonzo’s ability to paint realistic characters (love them or hate them).

Like in the first half, the artistry is by no means spectacular but it does work within this setting with emphasis on textures and background detail, sometimes at the cost of the moment. The musical score however continues to build both in scale and mood. Ultimately, it comes off as a very well constructed symphonic score that manages to impress (even in the show’s darker moments).

Once again I’m left with mixed feelings on the occasional old-English/ Shakespearean-inspired dialog on the English dub, which may actually be superior to the original Japanese dialog (a rarity in the anime world). It’s not quite as glaring an inconsistency as it was in the first installment, but it without fail makes the viewer wonder if it would have worked better to quit resisting and just perform the entire show that way or to avoid any and all references to that era and simply do away with it entirely.

The English voice cast commentary track is great in terms of demonstrating just what a highly anticipated project the show was to Funimation. It’s funny to hear that nearly everyone on staff did their absolute best in the hopes of snagging one of the lead roles. Of course the producers had to narrow it down and surely there were those lowly voice actors left feeling like the last person on the wall during team selection of a gym class dodge ball game.

In all, this is a must have for those who watched, loved, liked, or even just barely got through the first half. For everyone else, this is definitely above average anime as a whole and now that the full 24-epiodes are available, this would be the perfect opportunity to get involved. After all, virtuous or otherwise, waiting for a show’s conclusion bites.

Added new depth to the classic William Shakespeare tail Romeo and Juliet.

I had a few doubt going into this series, but my misgivings were quickly put to rest, I thought it might turn out like the Leonardo DiCaprio movie Romeo and Juliet, the movie was pretty bad. Thankfully the anime series is a whole lot better.

Romeo X Juliet is a extraordinary anime series. There is the same story of two waring families, and the two children from the families falling in love. There are so many things that make this a great anime series. First the story, sure there’s the same classic story, but GONZO added much more and new twists to the story. The world the anime series takes place in is wonderful. A mysterious land floating in the sky, winged horse, and of course the Tree called Escalus. The mystery behind the floating land is the real story. The love story, between Romeo and Juliet is just a added benefit.

The characters were also amazing. GONZO brought many changes to them, adding more life to them than in the classic play. Characters from Lady Portia(Romeo’s Mother), William, Ophelia, and many more.

Next is the music, which is excellent on par with Fullmetal Alchemist, but a notch below Cowboy Bebop.

Finally the animation is done by GONZO. The did a stunning job with Romeo X Juliet, it just amazes me how good a job they do.

Overall Romeo and Juliet is a classic anime series, and is in my top 5 anime series I’ve seen

As stated in the title, Zatoichi Collection II contains Episodes 14-26 of the First Season.

Whether you are a die-hard Zatoichi fan, or a casual viewer looking for something different, the Zatoichi Collections are great place to begin (Or end, if you’ve already seen all 26 of Katsushin’s movies. If you haven’t, well…what are you waiting for?!?)

Each of the 13 episodes (14-26) averages *about* 50 minutes. If you find yourself questioning “how many scumbags can our hero possibly dispatch in only 50 minutes?”, well, the answer is “as many as he wants”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Zatoichi Collection II! Click Here

Each episode is a mini-movie, with all the action, humor, drama and tragedy of a full-length movie packed into 50 minutes. I’ve seen all 26 episodes of the 1st Season, and I enjoyed every single minute of my time spent with Shintaro Katsu as the immortal-beloved, Zatoichi.

Fans of Zatoichi will notice repeat plot-lines, gags, and similar stunts during certain action sequences, but don’t even think of letting that dissuade you from purchasing these treasures. The true beauty of Zatoichi is that it’s star, the very soul of the show, Shintaro Katsu, could make a humorless joke funny, or a cliche’ pratfall look new, interesting, and even dangerous. He could make eating a steaming bowl of rice look so delicious, that I just had to stop and cook myself some right then and there, while Ichi-san waited on pause in the living-room.

Now, writing a review of each episode is a lot of work, and I’m far too lazy to even consider doing that, so just take my word when I say that even a *not so good* episode of Zatoichi, is still twice as good as almost anything out there. In my book, there are a few *not so good* episodes, while the rest (and there are 100 episodes in all) fall into the *Oh my god, that was awesome!* category.

In closing, I’ll just say if you don’t already own Zatoichi Collection I, go buy it right now. If you already own it and are reading this review of Collection II, you can stop reading now and go buy it; I won’t be offended you didn’t finish reading this, I promise.

You’ll save money purchasing this set vs. buying the DVDs individually. If you’re a fan of samurai films, Lone Wolf & Cub, or the Zatoichi films then you’ll love Zatoichi the TV series. The production isn’t quite as good as the films, but it’s good enough. The incredible stories and sword fighting is what will keep you glued to your seat. The original actor from the films reprises his role here and is excellent.

I highly recommend this set, as well as set one. And if you haven’t seen the films, definitely go check those out as well. Zatoichi is a masterpiece in storytelling.

This is one of the funniest movies made in my lifetime. I had seen the movie hundreds of times and equally enjoyed each viewing, so when I heard there was going to be an unrated version, I pre-ordered it right away.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dumb and Dumber! Click Here

This is a great DVD edition. The deleted scenes are hilarious – and some probably should have been left in the movie (like the “other peoples’ money – seize the day” scene). The alternate endings are also pretty cool, but they definitely chose the best ending for the actual theatrical release. The retrospective documentary is also quite interesting, as you get some insight into the production, casting, etc… of the movie, as well as the impact it has had on comedy fans over the years. If you search through the interactive menus enough, you will even find a couple of hidden features.

Dumb and Dumber lives on as a standout comedy film. It just never seems to get old… I’m just excited to finally get some bonus footage from this comedy classic!

If there is a film out there that has created such an rift among viewers as Dumb and Dumber, I’d like to see it. It seems that everyone I know either loves the movie or abhorrs it. It is easy to see why people love the movie. The movie is outrageously funny, and I believe most of the film’s critics will concede this. However, without fail, the number one critique of the film by opponents is, “but it’s so stupid.” This is like saying you don’t like Schindler’s List because “it’s too serious.” Of course it’s stupid! That’s the point! Unfortunately, pounding the keys on the keyboard harder isn’t helping to portray my sentiments here. First of all, this is not a movie you can only see once. Sure, one viewing will account for all the “big laughs”, Lloyd’s airport fiasco, Harry’s bathroom adventure and the ski lift accident. If you base your judgement on the big laughs alone, I can see how the movie could seem innane and childish. I suggest every critic of Dumb and Dumber should watch the movie a few more times for the little laughs. There are so many jokes and they are so clever that I find myself appreciating the movie more each time I watch it. For example, in the scene with the state trooper (Harland Williams) the center of comedic attention is clearly the point at which the officer drinks the beer bottle full of urine. This “big laugh” often steals the limelight away from the smaller laughs in the same scene. While handing the bottle over to the trooper, Lloyd accidentally spills some of the urine on Harry, to Harry’s obvious displeasure. When the officer realizes what it is he has swallowed, one can faintly hear Lloyd suggest, “Tic Tac sir?” It is subtle moments like these that pervade the movie and make it great every time you watch it. I think part of the problem with the movie is that there are simply too many jokes in the movie. Many of the more subtle, clever jokes get overshadowed by bigger ones, leaving some feeling like the movie is simple toilet humor. This is a grave injustice. Perhaps the most complexing issue concerning the critical reception of Dumb and Dumber is the overwhelming acclaim of the Farelly brother’s follow-up film, There’s Something About Mary. The two movies are eerily similar. Both involve a road trip starting in Providence. These trips are in search of a woman who is way to good for her respective suitor. In both, the protagonists encounter difficulty and comedic moments along the way. Yet everyone I know loves Mary, while Dumb and Dumber recieves mixed reviews. The only significant difference between the two films is that in Dumb and Dumber, our hero doesn’t get the girl. Perhaps this is why reception of the movie is so clearly delineated along gender lines. Women, I can only assume, want Dumb and Dumber to be a romantic comedy, which it is clearly not. Mary can be seen perhaps as fitting this genre because it has the textbook ‘boy gets girl’ ending (although my mother wanted Brett Favre to get the girl). The fact that Dumber doesn’t fall into the obligatory cliche ending is, in my opinion, a large part of it’s appeal. Whether you like it or not, you should buy a copy of Dumb and Dumber and watch it fifty times like I have. Then I think you will understand that being stupid is “genius, sheer genius.”

Imitation of Life is available for streaming or downloading.

Although little known today, in her own era author Fannie Hurst was among America’s most famous authors, a writer who frequently challenged the status quo in both her life and her literature. Among her most popular works was the novel IMITATION OF LIFE, which first came to the screen starring Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers in 1934. Today both the novel and film would be considered somewhat racist–but at the time both were considered social shockers, dealing frankly with single mothers, rebellious daughters, and racial issues in a way that few novels and fewer still films of the era dared.

The first film version was as faithful to the novel as it dared be, telling the story of two single mothers–one black, one white–who join forces and hit the big time when the white woman successfully markets the black woman’s pancake recipe. But the 1959 film version substituted pancake make-up for pancake batter: the white woman is an actress, and with her black friend behind her she climbs the ladder to Broadway stardom. Director Douglas Sirk was reknowned for his ability with this sort of material, and although he did better films IMITATION OF LIFE is perhaps his most obvious stylistic statement: gallons of gloss, more soap suds than a sink full of dishes, and enough vulgar melodrama to fuel a thousand 1950s schoolgirl dreams.

This time around our stars are Lana Turner and Juanita Moore, supported by Sandra Dee and Susan Kohner as the respective and rebellious daughters who make their mothers lives a living hell, with Lana’s daughter Sandra falling in love with her mother’s beau and Juanita’s daughter Susan determined to defeat the racist society in which she lives by passing for white. All four actresses give it everything they’ve got, which means they all emote to the nth degree as they suffer through every emotional upheaval the screenwriters can devise.

Turner and Dee are essentially Turner and Dee. The real surprises here are Moore and Kohner. Saddled with a story that still keeps the black woman in the kitchen while the white woman plays, Moore nonetheless gives an outstanding and ultimately heartbreaking performance, and Kohner matches her every bit of the way as the wayward daughter who makes one bad choice after another in her refusal to knuckle under to a repressive society. It is a tremendous pity that neither actress went on to equally high-profile roles and films, but the times were against them–as the very nature of the film’s story should make abundantly clear.

The original novel and film were actually advanced for their time, but by the time this version hit the screen the “white lady upstairs and the black lady downstairs” was hardly a rung up the ladder. Even in 1959 many denounced the film as perpetuating racial stereotypes and class-thinking, and by today’s standards it is alternately distasteful and absurd. But oddly enough, that fact doesn’t undercut the incredible watchablity of the film. We may sneer at some of the values it presents, but it holds our attention all the way, and you’ll need at least three hankies for the film’s conclusion. If you are torn between purchasing the DVD or a VHS version, you should know that there is actually little difference between the two. The film has not been restored for DVD, and the lack of restoration is quite noticeable; moreover, the only bonus material on the DVD is the theatrical trailer. You might prefer to go with a low cost VHS until a really good DVD is released.

Imitation of Life is a movie that had perfect timing in the changing world of 1950’s Americana.

The oppression of legal segregation had taken its toll and a prime example of this burnout is Susan Kohner’s Sara Jane. This character had the perfect mother, but society told Sara Jane at a very young age that her mother would NEVER be good enough because of her black skin color. Sara Jane chafes at the limitations society places on her. She doesn’t want to be associated with maids, chauffeurs or going through back doors. She wants more, and as a `white woman’ she can get it. Many viewers who watch this film will be angry at Sara Jane, however, one must remember that ‘black’ was not yet beautiful, and this is the pre-civil rights era.

Lana Turner’s Laura Meredith asks Sara Jane, `have I ever treated you differently?’ The movie makes this answer abundantly clear although Sara Jane answers `no.’ The audience sees Turner’s pigeonholing of Sara Jane and Annie. Even after years of living together – she actually says to Annie, `I didn’t know that you had any friends.’

Laura Meredith is a character that represents society as a whole in this film. She is the accepted race and therefore, pleasantly clueless about matters that doesn’t affect her, while aiming for and achieving her dreams. Through the passage of time Laura becomes rich, successful, and a star – and for Annie, well, she remains the maid.

The DVD of this movie is extremely poor. The transfer is down right dirty in one scene and grainy throughout the film. There is one scene where Sara Jane is running down the stairs and she freezes in action. Universal didn’t even care enough about the viewer to put this common play-pause in a point where it would be seamless. This is a classic film that has been given anything but classic attention – extremely sloppy work from Universal.

The best fairy tales have as many — if not even more — lessons for adults as they do for kids. “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen,” directed by former Monty Pythonite Terry Gilliam, is a great example of this.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Adventures of Baron Munchausen! Click Here

Mining a rarely tapped vein of German fantasy lore, the movie brings to life its unlikely hero in the form of a middle-aged, at times elderly, German nobleman. Munchausen wanders the world — and occasionally places above and below — seeking outrageous adventures with his marvelous companions: Albrecht, the strongest man alive; Berthold, the fastest man alive; Adolphus, who has amazing vision; and Gustavus, who has incredible hearing and powerful lungs.

In the movie, an elderly Munchausen disrupts a theatrical production of his adventures in a 17th century city under seige by invading Turks. Munchausen’s efforts to set the record straight are in turn disrupted by a cannon assault, and his attempt to quietly die in the theater’s ruins are interrupted by Sally Salt (Sarah Polley), a small girl with a huge heap of stubborn. Sally is possibly the only person around who believes Munchausen is real, and her belief is impetus enough for the baron to dispense with dying long enough to try and save the town.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Adventures of Baron Munchausen! Click Here

Setting off with stowaway Sally in a prop ship floating on a current of hot underthings, Munchausen finds his missing friends and saves the town as promised after some eye-popping adventures — and with a few twists and surprises on the way.

John Neville is perfect as the dashing, resourceful and exceptionally lucky Baron Munchausen. In both the younger and older incarnations, he glows with the air of a legend come to life, straight from a storybook wonderland. As his older self, he exudes curmudgeonly bitterness over this new Age of Reason which is eroding his tales. The world, he says, “is made of laws now. Laws of hydraulics, laws of social dynamics, laws of this, that and the other. No place for three-legged cyclops in the South Seas. No place for cucumber trees and oceans of wine. No place for me.”

Ah, but there is. Sometimes, the world just needs reminding.

Munchausen rides cannon balls, uses snuff to defeat a massive sea beast, dances on air, sails to the moon and generally cheats death. Most of the time. But always with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, like any good, stalwart hero should. If you’re big on realism, pass this one by. But if you want to exercise your sense of wonder, pick up “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.” Please, believe he’s real or the town is lost.

(THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE “BLU-RAY” VERSION OF THIS FILM)

Sometimes you despair. A new format is trust upon us – and an opportunity is presented to the movie industry to finally to do the business by their classics – and what do they do – they give us the same old dull stock and rip us off by getting us to pay more for it.

Twenty years on, Terry Gilliam’s 1989 fantasy epic is still extraordinary – inventive, funny, touching, and on a scale few movies today would even dare to go near. Unfortunately, the 2008 transfer of it to the new format is more Blur-Ray than Blu-Ray. And while it’s not awful all the way through – it’s not far off it. For large parts of the film there’s grain and blocking – the colours in some instances are better for sure – but it’s also obvious that little or no restoration has been done to the print – when like “Time Bandits” – here is a fantasy film that is crying out for a clean up – and would surely have been much more commercially viable if it had been cleaned up – and a big deal made of it (even a re-launch in the cinemas?).

The extras mimic the special edition DVD issue – reviewed elsewhere – nothing great.

When you see “Cool Hand Luke” or “Zulu” or “2001: A Space Odyssey” on BLU RAY, the clean up work is immediately apparent and evident throughout the entire film – making them an enjoyable ’spot-the-difference’ experience for the whole duration. But you know you’re in trouble with “Munchausen” the second the washed out “Columbia” logo comes up at the beginning – I’ve seen crinkled videotape look better than this. What a huge disappointment and what a disservice to a really great fantasy film. I can only think of the gobsmacking beauty of Uma Thurman as she appears in a seashell to cheer myself up…

Unfortunately this release is why Amazon reviews are necessary. Avoid this overly expensive poor reissue unless you absolutely have to own it…

The picture quality of the disc is very good considering the fact that the material is so old. The selections could have been better, because there are some better shorts with Curly that I have enjoyed more. I have waited for Columbia to release the stooges on DVD. Beware of other no-name companies that are releasing the Stooges on DVD, because the quality will not be as good. I did not like the fact that after every short on the DVD, the disc goes back to the menu. I hope on future releases that the disc just plays through all the shorts continuosly without stopping.

Any Curly short pre-1944 or so is great but the best are these early shorts where the boys are still young enough to pull off some great violence and sight gags.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Three Stooges: Curly Classics! Click Here

“The Woman haters” is their first Columbia short and Curly is actually referred to as jackie. The episode is done 100% in rhyme or song which turns a lout of people off but I think is fabulous. The Boys become Members of the Woman Hater’s Club but Larry secretly marries a girl and the boys go wild on a train. Then ending with the boys singing togehter and smacking in rhyme is classic.

“Three Little Pigskins” the boys are mistaken for 3 football heroes by gangsters and then have to actually play a game to disastrous results. Co-stars a young Lucille Ball.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Three Stooges: Curly Classics! Click Here

“Punch Drunks” is the first in what would be a long running theme in Stooges plots…Curly going nuts when he hears, sees, or smells something. In this case he goes nuts when he hears “pop goes the WEasel”. Moe makes a boxer out of him and takes him to the title. A Classic!

“Men In Black” Parody of “Men in White” a popular drama of the day. This short was nominated, but did not win, an Academy award. The boys are three dimwit doctor who go on a rampage in a hospital. Contains some of the greatest lines and sight gags of any Stooges short. “Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard!”

“A Plumbing We Will Go” The stooges pose as plumbers and are hired to fix a leak in a fancy mansion. They wind up crossing the electrical system with the plumbing and generally ruin the place. To escape the wrath of the homeowners the stooges escape through a magicians trap door.

“Micro-phonies” A later Curly short. Curly is mistaken for “Senorita Cucaracha” a singer who Curly mimicked. The boys show up in their disguises to “sing” at a Mrs. Bixby’s party but run into trouble when Moe smashes the record Curly Lip-syncs to over Curly’s head. The real singer tries to help by singing from behind a curtain while Curly mimics, but she is discovered and the stooges exit to a hail of phonograph records.

All in all one of the best Curly Collections

This is one of the greatest Godzilla movies ever produced, but this DVD version is far from perfect. Unfortunately, this is just a re-issue of the same DVD released a few years ago. The film transfer is exactly the same as the one previously released by ADV films, which has a recently re-dubbed mono soundtrack. The ADV soundtrack is much inferior to the one originally produced for American International Pictures in 1968, which featured an excellent voice-cast and a different script. Apparently the AIP version can’t be published because the ownership rights are in limbo. Based on the cover notes, I bought this DVD believing it had the original AIP voice-tracks. No such luck. The folks at ADV deliberately stretch the truth. The cover art claims it’s the “50th Anniversary Special Edition”, but Destroy All Monsters was made in 1968, which makes this DVD issue the 36th anniversary for the film (in 2004). The 50th year, is a reference to the first Godzilla movie “Gojira” made in 1954, but the text makes no mention of Gojira or Godzilla. It also claims to contain “The original motion picture and soundtrack”, which is misrepresentation. The original film was Japanese language, and this DVD isn’t even the original English version. I would’ve been a lot less disappointed if they had at least given this version some chapter stops and stereo audio (which there isn’t). There’s not even a menu for this low budget version. If you try to hit the chapter advance button, the movie starts over from the beginning. There’s no menus, no extras, no subtitles, no secondary audio tracks, no trailer, no nothing. The only thing that’s different from ADV’s first issue of this movie, is the cover art and the addition of a music CD. The CD contains 30 mono-audio music tracks from the movie soundtrack. The music score is wonderful, but the audio is not stereo and the fidelity is only fair. My point of contention is that ADV is trying to fool us into believing this movie has the original audio soundtrack, but instead gives you fine-print on the back mentioning an extra music CD. Buyer beware, if you already own the original release of this DVD, don’t be fooled into thinking this is a different version.

For the 50th anniversary of Godzilla, we have a special relelease of Destroy All Monsters on DVD. This in itself is good, and an added attraction is that there’s a second disc — a CD of the soundtrack. But there are two downsides:

— there are no special featuers — not even a theatrical trailer.

— the dub is the poorly acted recent dub from a few years ago. The original dub is not great (what dubs are? Why, oh, why, don’t they also offer subtitled versions), this one is very poorly acted, more so that usual even for these types of films.

Overall, I’d still recommend this to Godzilla fans (and I’ve been one since seeing King Kong vs. Godzilla in its original US showing at the drive-in when I was a kid), but it could have been so much better.

I bought discovery a few years back, and to be honest I wasn’t impressed, so into the back of the collection it went. Then I saw Interstella 5555. Now I can’t stop listening to the damned thing, and smiling when certain tracks come on, because Discovery finally has a context that is pleasing.

Interstella 5555 really is an over the top, sentimental piece of anime, and that’s what is so great about it. The fact that the hero of the story flies around in a gigantic space guitar only really bothers you the first time you see it.

I really liked that there is zero dialogue in this movie, just Discovery as the soundtrack, and lots of non-verbal communication, meaning that there’s no need for translation, or bad dub-overs. One can view it in any country.

The animation is trully top notch, if not heavily 70’s themed. It’s deffinately a cheesy movie, but that cheese pays off big time in the form of charm, and in the end a kind of sci-fi optimism, which is kind of nice in an age when everyone is surly, sarcastic, and irony ladden.

This movie will leave you feeling good, so why not buy it?

This is an anime cartoon set to the soundtrack of Daft Punk’s “Discovery.” There are NO other words, dialogue or songs!

If you like “Discovery” and don’t particularly care about anime one way or another, you will still like this movie. If you love anime but don’t have any particular feeling about Daft Punk, you will also like the movie.

If, however, you happen to be someone who really likes anime AND really likes Daft Punk, this movie will make you wet yourself. Go nuts.

Haunting, exquisite, dreamlike film, which brought out my hidden-deep-inside emotions, myself not being a very emotional or demonstrative person, making it a definitely one-of-a-kind experience for me, just like “I’ll Never Forget You” (1951), a remake of Leslie Howard’s “Berkeley Square” (1933), starring Tyrone Power and Ann Blyth, made a likewise impression when I was just a child. Although, it must be said, “Portrait of Jennie” is a superior film.

There’s something with these people-meeting-from-different-times-theme-based films, that have this special, strange & weird effect on me, being this movie (in my opinion) the definite masterpiece of its kind. For those who are interested, besides the mentioned above, you can try both versions of “Smilin’ Through” (1932 & 1941), “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir” (1947), “Somewhere in Time” (1980), and although not strictly of the kind, “Peter Ibbetson” (1935).

Jennifer Jones does a very fine job in the difficult part of the ethereal Jennie, giving credibility at the character’s different stages of her life. Joseph Cotten, a very fine actor, is absolutely believable as the obsessed artist, who learns (unknowingly) that until one really loves somebody, one hasn’t really lived.

Ethel Barrymore, grand dame of the American Theater and an occasional character film actress, gives a great performance in a part worthy of her talent, as the owner of an Art Gallery who befriends Cotten, becoming sort of her mentor. Others in the exceptional supporting cast: Cecil Kellaway (as Barrymore’s partner), sweet grand lady of the silent screen, the legendary Lillian Gish (as a Nun) and funny and very human David Wayne (as Cotten’s pal).

Trust me, if you’re a sensitive person, this movie will linger in your mind for several days after watching it, and it won’t end there, you will want to “experience” it again and again. Since I bought this dvd, and I’ve got a big video and dvd collection, I have watched it at least four times, not counting all the times I had previously seen it on TV’s late night showings.

The dvd edition quality is very good and it gives one the special opportunity of watching the film in the original way it was intended to be seen, most of it in black and white, then switching to green shading (for the storm sequence), then to sepia tone and the final shot in full Technicolor, a special treat.

The dvd has no bonuses, except for the film’s original trailer and, believe me, this picture does not need anything else!!

Jennifer Jones & Joseph Cotten starred in three other excellent pictures prior to this final pairing: “Since You Went Away” (1944), “Love Letters” (1945) and “Duel in the Sun”, all of them produced by David O. Selznick, Jones’ second husband.

“Portrait of Jennie” is the embodiment of ethereal supernatural melodrama at its very best. The film stars Joseph Cotton as disgruntled artist, Eben Adams. Disgusted at his inability to make inroads into the artistic community, Adams artistic sensibilities are castrated by gallery owner, Miss Spinney (Ethel Barrymore) who points out that there is no passion in his work. Disillusioned once more, Adams is all set to toss his fledgling career in the ash can when he suddenly comes in contact with the sprite, Jennie (Jennifer Jones). Though she too doesn’t have much to say about Adams work, he suddenly becomes inspired by her and begins to sketch her portrait in Central Park. However, before he can finish, Jennie vanishes into thin air. Taken with the experience, Adams persists to draw Jennie from memory and consequently finds his muse. Throughout the film, Adams will repeatedly come in contact with the ghostly Jennie; each time she grows older than during their previous meetings. Not until Adams confronts an old nun, Mother Mary of Mercy (Lillian Gish) is the secret of Jennie finally revealed.

By 1948 David O. Selznick was fighting a losing war on a double front. His dreams of transforming his wife, Jennifer Jones into an actress, the stature of Garbo, had been met with increasing critical disdain. He was also by this point in his professional career well into a period of economic decline from which he and his studio would never recover. That “Portrait of Jennie” failed to find its audience at the box office suggests more of a post war cynicism for films with embellished romantic subplots – all of which had been highly successful and in great demand during Selznick’s 30s tenure. However, at the time of its release it did nothing to alleviate Selznick’s fiscal crisis.

MGM’s DVD is rather impressive. The B&W picture exhibits a very nicely balanced gray scale with smooth, solid blacks and very clean whites. Age related artifacts are present throughout but do not distract. Some minor edge enhancement crops up but pixelization is kept to a minimum. Overall the picture will surely not disappoint. The audio is mono but more than adequate for a film of this vintage. There are no extras.
