Ok, first of all, the movie is done as well as it could have been. It does leaves out some facts that the book felt was important to include. But miniscule things must be omitted. They did the best job possible that they could have done to eliminate less important plot lines. The opening scenes could have been allowed more time, and made it feel less rushed, but it worked out well. The acting in this movie is a definite improvement over those last 3 movies. You will applaud Daniel Radcliffe’s performance. Emma Watson is as much of an amazing actress as she has always been, and I still think that she is underused. Her scenes at the Yule Ball were awe-inspiring. The effects, visual and CG, are amazing. You can feel as if you are there right now. Ralph Fiennes plays Voldemort beautifully and sends chills down your spine and makes you loath him from his first second on screen. Miranda Richardson really hit the nail on the head with Rita Skeeter. Her scenes are some of the funniest of the entire movie. The Director of this installment of the highly successful Harry Potter series was Mike Newell. He does an outstanding job. There are some scenes that are so cinematically amazing. The overall feel of the film is without a fast-paced action thriller. You fear for Harry’s life every second of the film. I was thoroughly impressed with this film, and with the fifth book being my favorite, I am praying that the film works wonders.

Deleted Scenes

SCENE 1: Dumbledore ask to his pupils to welcome the Durmstrangs and Beauxbatons students. All the Hogwart students then start to sing Hoggy Hoggy Hogwarts or the school song.

SCENE 2: A Durmstrangs student asks a girl if she wants to go with him to the Yule Ball. She says “yes” and the two friends make gestures in the background.

SCENE 3: Harry tries to speak with Cho Chang, but her friends are around her and the opportunity never works out .

SCENE 4: At the Yule Ball, Flitwick introduces the Weird Sisters band. The star singer addresses the crowd and then the music begins.

SCENE 5: Karkaroff tell to Snape about the mark on his arm. Snape ignores him and removes points to Fawcet and Stebbins, who are briefly shown, and Snape disregards Karkaroff’s concerns then.

SCENE 6: Mr. Crouch and Harry are speaking, then Madeye appears as Barty leaves.

SCENE 7: The trio speaks about the death of Mr. Crouch. Ron thinks that the Daily Prophet will cover it up on Fudges orders. Hermione believes that this death, Harrys burning scar, and the fact that the Dark Mark had been cast , are too much of a coincidence, and she thinks Harry should go talk to Dumbledore about all of this.

SCENE 8: The trio discuss their suspicions about what Karkarov has on his arm. Hermione asks Harry what ingredients Snape think he stole from him, and she relises that they are all ingredients in a polyjuice potion.

Games, AND MUCH MORE

P.S. It doesn’t matter that Hermione’s dress is Pink instead of Blue. It does matter that Harry’s eyes are supposed to be green, when they are Blue in the movies!

In this forth instalment in the ever popular Harry Potter series based on the novel by JK Rolwling we see Harry mature in many ways, he must over come three deadly tasks, face a fully formed Lord Voldermort and possibly the most horrifying task of all for the 14 year old Harry, he must get himself a date for the Yule Ball!

The performance of the trio in the Goblet of Fire is amazing, every scene seemed to be executed perfectly and the on screen chemistry between the young stars is evident. Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) reaches new heights in this movie perfectly portraying the uncomfortable adolescent Harry has become; he faces the new emotional roles in the movie with confidence and enthusiasm, like wise for Radcliffe’s young co-stars Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) Once again we see terrific performances from the likes of Dame Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall), Alan Rickman (Professor Snape) and Robbie Coltraine (Hagrid) as well as meeting some new faces amongst the students, including students from two other magical academies who join the students at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry to participate in the Tri-Wizard Tournament! Another highlight of this marvellous movie is Ralph Fiennes’ portrayal of Lord Voldermort which can be rather alarming even to an adult!

I believe this movie to be of an excellent standard not only due to the charismatic trio, but also thanks to the special effects of this movie. We see many fascinating creatures including a ferocious fire breathing dragon (which Harry must fight armed with nothing but his wand!) and while watching you can truly forget that these creatures were created using blue screen and you can honestly believe that you are in this world, that it truly exists just behind closed doors. This is very true to the novels making this a movie every Potter fan can enjoy and indeed fans of spectacular plots and mind-blowing special effects alike can appreciate this, making the Goblet of Fire a movie for all the family! Overall I would call this movie riveting and n absolute gem of the movie world. You do not want to miss this brilliant piece of film history, no DVD collection would be complete with out it! Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire amazing 5 stars!

First, let me start by saying I love the Die Hard movies. So when I saw this collection on BD, I just couldn’t refuse!

You already know the movies, so let’s get to the overall package.

Positives:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Die Hard Collection! Click Here

+ DTS MA on every movie that really reinvigorates the films

+ Good set of extras, not a single feature from the standard DVDs is left out, making you think these are the definitive versions to have

+ Special box saves you space on shelf and keeps discs safe. It’s a little bigger than the Planet Earth – The Complete BBC Series [Blu-ray] boxset (without the slipcase).

+ Exactly the same discs as individual releases, so you’re not getting gimped versions of the already released BD movies –they’re the same.

+ Live Free or Die Hard is a total show-stopper, demo material, A+ reference disc. Both in terms of video and audio, this is one of the best movies to showcase what High Definition is all about (and the movie itself is a great ride, btw)

Negatives:

- In the first three movies, both subtitles and dubs in spanish are CASTILLIAN, not Latin American. Why on earth did FOX included castillian dubs/subs on an AMERICAN, region locked disc, goes beyond me. They should know by now that most latin people HATE the castillian dubbing, specially when these movies have such great voice acting. Granted, I always prefer to watch movies in their original languaje w/subs, but there’s always the chance to borrow or watch the movie with people that prefer to hear it in their own language. Even the regionalized castilian subtitles are distracting. This is not a problem on the 4th movie. The voice acting and subs are the way they should be for an american release.

- The first 2 movies look downright awful, to the point it seems you put the SE DVD and upconverted it. Time is totally not an excuse: just look at the impressive video quality of Batman: The Movie [Blu-ray]: a 40 yo movie that looks absolutely fantastic (more than it deserves, if I may be so bold). And that flick is probably just being released to make a quick buck on the batman fever, so FOX, you’re telling me you couldn’t give a AAA movie such as Die Hard a proper transfer? Come on…

- The 3rd movie looks way better, but still does not compare to the visual blast that is Live Free or Die Hard.

- The 4th movie is the theatrical, PG-13 version, not the UNRATED one. Again, what’s going on here! Simply put, FOX could have put both version on the same disc via seamless branching. This has been a reality since the days of DVD, and there are a couple BD that have this feature already, so NO excuse.

- The special features on every disc are Standard Def. only to the point most of them look like VHS (this is no exaggeration). Not a single drop of remastering love (let alone HD treatment) has been poured on even the alternate endings.

Bottom line? This is looking like a future double dip. If you don’t care for extras or hearing the movies in a language other than English, this will probably suit you fine, even without the unrated cut of Live Free or Die Hard.

However, this is far from being the Definitive version of the movies to have, to the point of getting me wondering if FOX actually knows the fact that this edition of the movie should be the one for all the american continent. Moreso, I’m left guessing if they care about what their public wants: both their High Definition users and their non-north american audience.

When I think Blu-ray, I expect high quality video and sound, otherwise there is no point to buying a blu-ray version of an already existing dvd.

The first two movies, Die Hard 1 & 2 from the 80’s, look terrible visually. FOX did a horrible job in re-mastering these for blu-ray, or they did not re-master them at all. It is possible they used the regular dvd’s and just up-converted them without remastering/restoring them digitally. Sound is decent. The third film, Die Hard with a Vengeance is more recent from the 90’s, but it doesn’t look great. The fourth film does look good and sounds great, but it would be more convenient to just purchase the fourth film as a blu-ray version and get the first three on regular DVD if you don’t own them already. You would save a lot more money and you would be getting the same thing as this box set here. FOX definitely messed up with this whole set.

This film is well written, has an all star cast and has wonderful photography. Filmed well before Top Gun, The Final Countdown has great areial combat/flight scenes and shows the awesome capabilites of the navy’s modern nuclear aircraft carriers and the stressful environment that all aboard have to live with every day.

Kirk Douglass and Marten Sheen show why they were “A” list actors when this film was made. Both gave excellent performances.

The script was well written with the exploration of the ships crew trying to deal with a potential paradox that would effect every person on the planet.

Great acting a good story and super photography of aircraft carrier and flight operations. If you like these features, you will love this movie.

“The Final Countdown” is one of my all-time favorite films, because it has just about everything I like: military hardware, heroism, and history — with a delicious helping of sci-fi fantasy. Off the coast of Hawaii, the modern day USS Nimitz encounters a bizarre storm, which is actually a portal through time. The crew gradually becomes convinced that they have emerged in 1941 just prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor — and that they have the futuristic firepower to stop it. But can history really be changed? Initially, it seems likely! In the highlight scene of the film, F-14 Tomcats go to the rescue of a yacht under attack by Zeros. Survivors, a suspicious Congressman and his assistant, as well as an incredulous Japanese pilot, are brought on board the spectacularly anachronistic aircraft carrier. From there, the mission to change history begins to go awry as paradox-producing events occur. Nonetheless, the Nimitz never falters. And you really anticipate, even as the time portal begins to close, that her guns and aircraft will engage the oncoming enemy. “The Final Countdown” is a wonderful fantasy, very realistically enacted. For a time-travel epic, I like the way all the “loose ends” are neatly tied up. History is preserved, with a sensitive, and I must say, emotional, tribute to the heroes of Pearl Harbor.

An American Werewolf in London is available for streaming or downloading.

1981 was The Year of the Werewolves…the furry fiends leaped onto movie screens in three major films: “The Howling,” “Wolfen,” and the classic of the genre, “An American Werewolf in London.” There has never been a greater werewolf film, there has never been a better transformation scene, and few horror movies can match the entertaining mixture of humor and scares that writer/direction John Landis (”Animal House,” “The Blues Brothers”) achieved here.

Although there had been humor in horror films before this movie, “An American Werewolf in London” showed once and for all that having comedy in a horror film didn’t mean that the film would lose out in the scare department. Landis makes it clear that the film is NOT a comedy — the horror scenes are carried with dead-seriousness and shocking impact — but there is so much quirky humor surrounding these scenes that the film becomes incredibly likable and buoyant. Most of the laughs come from seeing the old movie werewolf premise dropped into the modern day and watching the characters try to deal with it.

Actors Griffin Dunne and David Naughton, neither of whom had been in a movie before, create a wonderful ‘ordinary guy’ feeling to their characters of two young American boys backpacking through Europe. In rural England, they have a nasty encounter with a legendary monster, and Naughton faces the consequences of being bitten when he returns to London and takes up living with a pretty nurse (Jenny Agutter).

The transformation scene is justly famous and a milestone in visual effects. Make-up wizard Rick Baker lets the viewers watch a real-time twisting of a human body into a wolf shape: limbs stretch, snouts pop, hair grows, the body contorts…it’s amazing to watch. (And on DVD, you can watch it over and over and over again). Even computer graphics can’t achieve an effect as startling as this one.

This DVD offers some nice extras. The image is good, and the 5.1 Surround Sound is decent (although there’s not a lot of back speaker sound). Actors Naughton and Dunne do feature commentary on the film, and provide some interesting information and sound as if they were having a great time reliving the experience. I wish that Landis had been on the commentary as well, but you can hear his thoughts on the film in an 18-minute interview. Landis is an absolute hoot to listen to; the guy is as funny as his movie, and he absolutely bursts with ideas and observations. To go along with the Landis interview is an 11-minute interview with make-up maestro Rick Baker. He provides a fascinating look at crafting what he calls “the coolest werewolf film ever made.” Also included is a vintage featurette on the making of the film, although it’s only about five minutes long (but you get more of wise-cracking John Landis), ten minutes of archival footage of Baker making a cast of David Naughton’s hand, and an assortment of storyboards, outtakes, and production photos.

“An American Werewolf in London” is a major turning point in horror films and visual effects — and even over twenty years later, it is still one of the most entertaining movies of its decade. It hasn’t aged at all, and this DVD lets you experience it the way it should be seen (and in the company of wild-man John Landis!)

This is one of the few movies that have consistently given me nightmares since I was a child. It is at least a decade ahead of its time. Most of the negative criticisms that I have read use the word “uneven” a lot. Even Roger Ebert, whom I admire, claimed that the humor and the horror were an uneasy mix. This was years before he gave the movie Scream a positive review. Now I LIKE the movie Scream, but there is no way that one can claim that it gets the balance right whereas Werewolf gets it wrong. Scream simply benefits from occurring in the cynical nineties – Werewolf suffers from being avant guard. .

The new DVD has a few good extras on it – especially a new interview with Landis. Even after all these years, the film still holds up. Unlike most films, I see more things in it the more I look. What, for instance, is up with the townsfolk of East Proctor and what is their relationship with the original werewolf? My guess – they brought it on themselves somehow. Maybe one of their own ran over a gypsy and was cursed. Instead of killing the bloke, they all decide to hide beneath the pentangle in The Slaughtered Lamb every full moon.

I am recently returned from England and this movie is listed in Fodor’s as one of the films that best showcases London. I heartily agree. I visited the infamous tube stop at Tottenham Court Road and it still looks much the same as when the David made his kill there. And as I walked, alone in the countryside, beneath the light of the full moon, I had to ask myself, “Am I crazy?” Fortunately, I made it to the pub. There I waited, beneath the pentangle, for my friends to walk me home.

I have seen this DVD about 30 times! After reading all the Henning Mankell Wallander mysteries, I ordered it from Amazon UK and switched my computer to Region 2. Boy was it worth it. Fantastic actors and crew. The high quality of the production is unmatched. Branagh won several awards for this series already, both for acting and producing. They are set to create three more this summer, again based on the magnificent books by Henning Mankell. There are two DVDs in the box. One has show 1 and 2 on it. The other DVD has Show 3 and then a ton of wonderfully produced specials. These include a fantastic and long chat between Kenneth Branagh and Henning Mankell. Mankell is delighted with the series and you will be too!!

The Kurt Wallander novels, authored by Henning Mankell, are quite popular in Europe but rather less well known in the US. “Wallander-Series I” brings to television and DVD the dramatization of three of the novels. Wallander, portrayed by veteran and gifted Irish actor Kenneth Branagh, is a detective on the police force of the gritty seaside town of Ystad in Sweden. He is a borderline physical and psychological burnout case, who has lost his sense of detachment from his cases and takes everything far too personally. At the same time, he is a brillant sleuth with an ability to make intuitive connections between seemingly unrelated cases. Assisted by his staff and supported by a faithful daughter, he manfully plugs away at some rather unorthodox cases.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Wallander: Sidetracked / Firewall / One Step Behind! Click Here

“Sidetracked” opens with a brilliantly staged scene in which Wallander fails to prevent a young woman from self-immolation in a sunlit field of flowers. He is also beset by a series of murders in the local art business, and by the health issues of his estranged father. Only Wallander can see the connections, which lead to a deadly sex ring and a surprising killer.

“Firewall” opens with the seemingly senseless murder of a taxi driver by two young women. As other bodies start to pile up, Wallander picks at a strange statement by one of the two young women, who escapes from police custody and then is herself horribly murdered. Wallander’s persistance leads him to an unorthodox terrorist plot, and a betrayal by a friend.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Wallander: Sidetracked / Firewall / One Step Behind! Click Here

“One Step Behind” involves Wallander in the deaths of several young persons who were connected with a midsummer’s eve celebration. Additional deaths lead Wallander into a wider case in which the police seem constantly one step behind the killer or killers.

This series was filmed in Sweden, which makes for some beautiful location shooting. The sets are contrasted with some grim social rot in Swedish society, as exemplified by the gritty portrayal of Ystad society. Wallander’s crew, all British actors, provide low-key support to Branagh’s haggard and unshaven lead detective. His personal suffering over each case and over a personal life seemingly in shambles, imparts a gray tone to the stories that may be unsettling to some viewers. However, the stories are intricately plotted and thrillingly concluded; Branagh carries the day in a fascinating portrayal. This series is very highly recommended to fans of PBS Masterpiece Mystery looking for something different in a police procedural.

He’s an old man living alone on a remote Swedish island. The island has only 600 inhabitants, and the locals respect his desire for solitude. When visitors ask where the old man lives, the locals say they don’t know. When we meet him he’s 86, and he’s been a widower for the past eight years. While he once thought of death as nothing more than a light being extinguished, he still feels his late wife’s presence each day. This convinces him that whatever death may be, it is not nothingness.

This man is Ingmar Bergman, just a few years before his death in 2007. As a film-maker he explored all aspects of the human condition. And in the fascinating documentary BERGMAN ISLAND he reveals many of the ways in which that exploration was autobiographical, driven by his family history, his personal failings, and his ever-present demons.

When we meet Bergman, we discover that he starts his day with breakfast then a walk on the island. He sits down at the same time each day and writes for three hours. It’s a routine he maintains in order to avoid giving into the demons or slipping into depression. His housekeeper comes in at 3pm. Some days he doesn’t talk to another human being.

But he’s been working again. Directing “Saraband,” the belated follow-up to his internationally acclaimed “Scenes From a Marriage.” In his talks with documentarian Marie Nyreröd, we also learn some interesting facts about the autobiographical nature of many of the most dramatic scenes in those highly personal movies. He also opens up about the cruelty he has inflicted on others and the “family laziness” that led him to abandon nine children born to five different wives.

Bergman’s recollections span everything from his childhood to his later years. We hear about physical abuse from dad and a trip to the shrink with mom (who was concerned about his “girlish” need for hugs and caresses). We gain insights into his days at film school, as a stage director and a pioneer in TV direction, and discover the inspiration for several famous scenes (playing chess with Death in “The Seventh Seal,” for instance). We relive with him his early successes–at Cannes and in Hollywood. These successes gave Bergman carte blanche to write and direct his own movies from an early point in his career. Looking back, he has some regret that this autonomy also made him miss finding a great collaborator or having a critic who would really give him an unvarnished opinion about his work.

All in all, this a fascinating documentary about the creative and personal life of a man who came of age in the pre-TV (and pre-Prozac) era and who created many of the most penetrating and psychologically astute tales that shaped world cinema. You don’t have to have seen all of Bergman’s movies to appreciate this film, but it is sure to inspire you to catch up on some you may have missed. Highly recommended.

This is a wonderful documentary–and is included in the new 2 disc Criterion Collection re-issue of The Seventh Seal–so spend $10 more and get them BOTH together!

In THE NEVERENDING STORY, Bastian Bux (Barret Oliver) is an average student who finds himself repeatedly being abused by bullies who like to steal his money and throw him into dumpsters. Bastian’s mother is dead and both he and his father are still trying to cope with the loss. However, Bastian’s father is a realist and thinks that Bastian spends too much time drawing pictures, reading books, and daydreaming. He wants his son to buckle down and get serious about school and life. He means well, but his advice doesn’t do much to improve Bastian’s condition. Eventually Bastian ends up meeting a strange bookstore owner that leaves a book, “The Neverending Story”, where Bastian is able to borrow it. Bastian sneaks away to the attic of his school, locks himself in, and begins reading. The story is a fascinating tale about a place called Fantasia, a seeming endless world filled with countless creatures of every shape and size. Fantasia is under attack by an unknown force known as the Nothing that destroys everything in its path. The Childlike Empress (Tami Stronach) selects the mighty warrior from the plains people, Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) to go on a journey and find the one person who can save Fantasia from total annihilation. Atreyu sets forth on a long, difficult journey, traveling all over Fantasia, but no one seems capable of helping him. As Atreyu journeys, Bastian secretly accompanies him and shares in all of his adventures. The book reads like none other that Bastian has ever read and it seems that he is a part of the story. As the Nothing grows stronger, Bastian has to decide if he will give into reality of what he sees around him or allow his imagination take control.

In THE NEVERENDING STORY II Bastian (Jonathan Brandis) is once again transported to Fantasia. Bastian is no longer threatened by bullies, but is instead taunted by his classmates when he joins the dive team. His father (John Wesley Shipp) misguidedly prods Bastian into overcoming his fears. Frustrated, Bastian returns to Mr. Koreander’s bookstore and though he is warned that the story in “The Neverending Story” doesn’t remain the same, Bastian borrows the book and ends up returning to Fantasia. Upon entering Fantasia, Bastian finds that he has the symbol of the childlike Empress, Auryn, around his neck. He is informed by the giant bird Nimbly (Martin Umbach) that anytime he makes a wish, the power in Auryn will make the wish come true. However, there is a dark secret to Auryn. To save Fantasia, Bastian must find out Auryn’s secret, defeat the evil witch Xayide, and stop the Emptiness from consuming Fantasia.

Of the two movies, THE NEVERENDING STORY is a far superior film that its sequel.

The DVD doesn’t offer many extras. On THE NEVERENDING STORY side of the disc, there are some notes about the book and characters and a trailer for the film. THE NEVERENDING STORY II side has a trailer, cast & crew list, and a word scramble game called “Bastian’s Challenge.” Also, both movies are shown in full screen and not widescreen.

The original NeverEnding Story movie was a masterpiece. A complete work of art. I remember watching that movie when I was a kid, it amazed me. I watch today, and it amazes me how it still draws me into that story so easily. In my opinion, it is a pure fantasy world with no flaws, in acting, in plot, in direction, in visuals; the characters are all wonderfully original and well played.

*sigh* Now…to the sequel.

Besides the fact that every single character was recast (aside from the bookkeeper?), and besides the fact that every character has a brand new personality which contradicts how they were in the first movie. Besides the fact that Bastian had brown hair in the first movie, and now all of a sudden he has blonde hair. Apart from the fact that Bastian’s dad has quite the receding hairline in the first movie, and now, in the sequel, where’d that full head of hair come from? Aside from the fact that Falcor turned stupid for something reason. Apart from the fact that Atreyu, the brave warrior in the first movie, turns into a confused sidekick that can only speak broken english now…

*sigh* aside from all of that…

The thing that gets me the most, throughout the sequel they call the Empress, “The Child-like Empress”… *sigh*

…She is not child-like; she is, in fact, just a child! “Child-Empress”!!!

The magic that was the first movie disappeared in the second. I think the thing that sets the movies apart the most, a thing that hurts the sequel quite a bit, is the fact that we have to views of the story, in the original, Bastian’s point of view as he reads the book, and then Atreyu’s and the others view from inside the story.

With the NeverEnding Story II, there is no outside view. It’s very linear, inside the story only, except of course, near the end, when the father starts reading the book, but the adult point of view doesn’t fit in very well with the story.

I just popped in The NeverEnding Story into my VCR. The visuals are stunning, the Fantasia world in the original movie is so well thought-out, and obviously so. But there’s something lacking with the sequel, it seems like you’re in a different, low-budget version of Fantasia.

*sigh*

So, I think I’m done with my rant.

But if you’ve lasted with me this long, here’s my advice:

The original movie is, no doubt, a must have in anyone’s movie collection. If you must see the second one, just to see how bad it is (if you haven’t seen it already), borrow it from someone or rent it, but don’t buy it. It’s not worth the money.

I, like many, first saw Style Wars back in the early 80’s on PBS as an impressionable youth who was just discovering Hip Hop in all it’s forms. It has remained to this day, one of the best (certainly the most honest) accounts of Hip Hop in it’s relative infancy. While the focus is squarely on the “writers” (graffiti artists for all you new jacks), we do get to see other aspects of Hip Hop culture in play (most notably b-boying with the Rock Steady Crew). Watching the film on dvd after so many years was literally like going back in time. It not only holds up, it has aged like fine wine. Every shot in the film reeks of NY & Hip Hop in the early 80’s. A true, 100% bonafide classic in every sense of the word. The filmakers have succeeded beautifully in capturing the spirit of the time, the place, the people and the culture. This is a true time capsule if there ever was one.
Ok, enough with accolades. Now on to the disc. Dang. Talk about getting the deluxe treatment. Whereas the Wild Style DVD is incomplete (see my review), Style Wars is not only complete, uncut and un-altered, it is absolutely full to brim with fantastic extras…close to 4 HOURS worth. Highlights include art and interviews with many of the films participants. Most notable for me was MIN ONE. He’s the tough little curly-haired, white kid who tries to get the rest of the writers to retaliate against Cap for “going over their burners”. (”That’s never forgive action”). All I can say is he looks like he’s been through one hell of a lot in the last 20 years. Very sobering to say the least.
Other extras include outtakes, audio commentary by the filmakers, and (this is very cool) a 30 minute loop of “whole cars”.
If you consider yourself a serious Hip Hop head, you have no excuse not to own this dvd.

The very fact that in the special features section there is an entire segment of photos of the cars that have been tagged with graffiti and the fact that the individuals who tagged the trains are presented, interviewed and paid homage to tells what a phenomenal slice of history this documentary is.

It was filmed during the time that these artists were doing their work and the ones still living are followed up with many years later. It really dives into the history and development of the phenomenon. Who can forget images of dirty big cities with the trains riding along with huge works of graffiti art on them? Someone was there to document it all. This film is a result of that work.

This is the story of it all. Interesting is the documenting of the lengths the authorities had to go to in order to control the “problem” (which, of course, is a matter of perspective). One of the artist is shown years later with his mother gleaming with pride and his mother, interviewed earlier in the film as well, still rolls her eyes at his pride.

The artists are interviewed, both then and now, and the connection of graffiti to hip-hop and B-boy culture is touched upon, although this is probably the weakest link in the film. Wild Style and The Freshest Kids take you deeper into the world of B-boys and Scratch takes you deeper into the world of hip-hop and the emergence of rap from it. But this is a great film on graffiti in its heyday.

It’s a common flaw for the MOH series: you’re tossed an idea that wouldn’t make for a bad little horror story, but the execution is ruinous and the tension is deflated by a running time that’s forty minutes too long. Take “Sick Girl,” for example.

An entomologist who has a bad habit of taking her work home with her loses in her apartment a bizarre Brazilian bug. This happens at about the same time that she finds an equally bizarre girlfriend. The two sexy ladies frolick and cavort, but one of them has an encounter with the AWOL insect, an encounter that leaves her … altered. What fate lies in store for the lovers? What will become of the strictly conservative granny-ish landlady? The lovably sexist coworker? The adorable little girl in the ladybug costume?

This horror-less gem takes an hour to answer these questions, and by the time they’re resolved, it’s hard to remember why you were ever supposed to care. Adding to the mix of Reasons Why This Thing Bites is the incompetent acting of our two lesbian leads. I’ll admit I know little about horror veteran Erin Brown, but if her performance here as Misty Falls is any indication, she’s very good at moaning, screaming, and looking through her bangs in a sultry, come-hither kind of way. And that’s all she’s good at. Angela Bettis was great in “May,” but she performs every scene here with the studied grace of a telephone pole, and she delivers every line as if she just underwent orthodontic surgery. If those idiosyncracies are meant to be intentional, then I guess at least they’re employed with some consistency, but I found them grating. They are to acting what constipation is to reticence.

Worst of all, however, is the tongue-in-cheek attempt of the movie to make a sly little statement about true love, about infidelity and dedication, and about the supernaturally wholesome power of childbirth and rearing. I’m known for reading too much into things, and I (really really really) don’t want to give the MOH overlords any more credit than they’re due, but there was so much empty space in the script that they had to fill it with something. Instead of tension, spookiness, or dread — y’know, stuff you’d expect in a horror — there’s a lot of pablum about relationships and dating. It doesn’t take much of a leap to see there’s a theme at play, and it’s as flat and uninspired as every other part of the product. I’m not saying I disagree with the message (such as it is), but the delivery needs some serious work. Or maybe just an econo-sized can of industrial-strength Raid.

This movie is just great, I saw it for the first time on Showtime In Australia and cannot wait to see it again. Its got a great plot and some very interesting characters. There are also some very sensual girl on girl scenes, although not very graphic (sorry guys). Its got a wonderful director and the fans of the movie May will not be disappointed. Angela Bettis plays a more gown up role in this movie and also sports a deeper voice (probably added for effect). This movie is well paced and kept me interested all the way though, don’t miss this gem!

The Perfect Holiday is not necessarily a bad movie but its far from a good one too. While I admire a movie that does not try to be offensive and wants to be positive there is a thin line from being a little schmaltzy to laying it on real thick. The movie is not unwatchable. It has a talented all-star cast that do a decent job acting but the script is hackneyed and cheesy to a fault plus its pretty bland.

Spoiler Alert!

The story: Gabriell Union plays Nancy, a newly divorced woman who’s daughter overhears her conversation about what she wants from a man: a compliment. The daughter goes to a mall Santa(played by Morris Chestnut) named Benjamin and wishes that her mom gets a compliment by her man. Benjamin(Chestnut) gives Nancy a compliment and soon they begin to date. Problems arise when Nancy’s naive son, John John gets annoyed by Benjamin because the little tyke misses his arrogant and thoughtless wannabe-rapper father J-Jizzy(played by Charlie Murphy)who would rather be large than be with his family. Then things get even more complicated for the relationship between Nancy and Benjamin when J-Jizzy asks for Benjamin, who also sings to record with him. Queen Latifah plays Mrs Christmas, an angel who is also the narrator of the movie.

Opinion: Positive: this movie is not terrible. Negative: but its not memorable either. Positive: it has an all-star cast. Negative: they are all wasted on a script that pulls every Christmas cliche out of the book.

Positive: The Perfect Holiday is earnest and has a heart. Negative: its syrupy to the point of cheesiness. Positive: it makes an effort at humor. Negative: The humor misses more than it hits. Positive: Its the least offensive Christmas comedy ever made. Negative: It wallows in mediocrity like pigs do in mud. Positive: Its great to see a movie especially an African-American film that is not based on sex and violence. Negative: Its kind of bland and the schmaltzy scenes are a bit much. All in all I would recommend this movie to you if you want to see a Christmas movie starring African Americans that is not offensive but Last Holiday and This Christmas are much better. Perfect Holiday is far from a stinker but when compared to great movies like This Christmas Soul Food, The Wood, The Inkwell, Love Jones, Brown Sugar etc Perfect Holiday can easily be forgotten.

I love Gabrielle Union and Morris Chestnut BUT The Perfect Holiday was not perfect. The story line was CUTE but not written for a major motion picture. This type of movie would have been great for Lifetime or a movie that goes straight to DVD format. I gave the movie 2 stars because the cast was well picked but the story line was lackluster.
