I loved this movie. It was largely panned by American critics, never even making it to American theaters, except for maybe one or two in NYC (none in LA) .

The film provided a righteous, complex viewpoint of some of the problems that modern-day Brazil faces. If you peek at comments of reviews of this film on major publications’ web sites (like NYTimes, LA Times, etc), you will scrutinize that the overwhelming majority of comments are from Brazilians who: 1) loved the movie, and 2) stated that the movie got the station apt.

The film shows the point of idea of patriotic police officers that want to do proper by their country, although they are confounded by their fellow police officers, the well-armed drug dealers, the bought-off constituents of the slums (favelas), as well as the leftist middle class that excoriates the police on the one hand for its heavy handed tactics as well as its corruption while at the same time sustaining the local drug lords by buying their product.

It is the film’s viewpoint towards the leftist middle class that I reflect doomed the film to never regain a sterling showing in the US. That, and the fact that this “unbiased” police force feels obligated (and in the eyes of some in the viewing public, justified) to consume extra-judicial, heavy handed tactics to regain results in fighting crime.

SEE THIS FILM!

The movie is quite violent, so it will appeal to action movie fans, but more than that, it is a social movie.

I was born and raised in Rio, cessation to one of the many favelas in that city.

Years ago, I attended the same university one of the characters in the movie did. The students there are accurately depicted. They are upper middle class students that preach peace and social services, but while doing that, they also smoke pot. When I didn’t eye any problems at the time, but now, I can ogle the hypocrisy of preaching peace, but also financing the violence by smoking pot.

I also have a really first-rate high school friend that’s a Capitain now in the PM (Military Policy) . He’s not piece of that Elite Squad, but he’s an objective cop. So while severly underpaid, there ARE just cops out there.

Not really a movie review, but a rant, but this movie was quite realistic and nostalgic for me.

At a time when the James Bond films were collected current and going strong, as were their imitators, British television viewers were watching a 10.5 hour, 12-part miniseries called “Reilly, Ace of Spies.” Based on the biography by Robin Bruce Lockhart, this engaging series is now available in a boxed station of 4 A&E DVDs (AAE-71748) and makes for some really tantalizing viewing.

With Sam Neill in the title role, we follow the career of the man who taught British intelligence that if ruthlessness gets the job done, then ruthless spies are what they need. Sidney Reilly, an assumed name as is learned later, remains right to friends but not altogether to his employers and casual acquaintances. And if he treats his wives questionably when his job gets in the design, he makes up for it by treating all the other women with mammoth feeling and tenderness.

Having slight patience with incompetence on any level, he gets a stout contract for battleships for Russia away from a British firm and to a German firm for which he works, he gets oil concessions, he steals plans by posing as a fire expert in Germany, and he finally tries to develop himself head of a provisional government that will overthrow the Bolshevik regime. And so on.

Along the intention he runs into two titanic villains: Basil Zaharov (Leo McKern, who can say more with a watch than most actors can with a page of text), and the chilly head of Soviet Intelligence Felix Dzerzhinsky (Tom Bell), who has position up a phony organization that pretends to be against Stalin and rakes in millions from rich anti-Bolsheviks all over the world. A terrifying moment comes when Stalin (David Burke) orders all in the group to be shot, because even following orders to appear disloyal “is no excuse”! Which is what happens when personal power is far more well-known than human beings.

Other major characters are Reilly’s boss Cummings (Norman Rodway), his fellow agent Hill (Hugh Fraser), and an astute oriental police officer (David Suchet) .

Like another two series about spies, “Tinker Tailor” and “Smiley’s People,” the memoir is complex, you never quite know at first who is who and who is lying more than the others. Except for some possibly supernatural business towards the ruin, you peer with both fascination and a vague disgust that this is what many people are really like-and that, from what we inspect, it is not the meek who are doing any inheriting.

Fascinating and curious viewing on a definitely “adult” level (i.e., lots of violence and a lot of naked flesh, the latter of which is comely gratuitous) . Neill does a suited job of portraying the complex and highly ambiguous main character.

There is an inviting documentary of the precise Reilly as a bonus feature, which should be seen after the series, not before.

Reilly – Ace of Spies is the best extended series of examine films ever made, in my understanding, for many reasons.

First, the cast of this twelve episode account is uniformly reliable beginning with Sam Neil as Sidney Reilly, a Russian born jew named Sigismund Rosenblum, who goes to work for the British Secret Service and takes the name Reilly because he thinks the Irish are well common all over the world. And Reilly travels over distinguished of the world doing the dirty work of the British government. Neil brings complexity to his role as an agent who believes the waste justifies the means. Machiavelli would be jubilant with Neil’s performance.

Leo McKern as Basil Zaharov, an arms dealer with morals similar to Reilly’s and ability almost the equal of Reilly, is the best of an outstanding supporting cast. McKern is worthy throughout the series. Zaharov goes head to head with Reilly and their conflicts result in many dramatic and surprising encounters.

Next is Tom Bell as Felix Dzerzhinsky, head of the Russian secret police at the beginning of the Russian Revolution of 1917. Bell is totally convincing as he deals first with Lenin, in a dazzling performance by Kenneth Cranham, and then Stalin, played by David Burke. Dzerzhinsky loves Lenin, hates Stalin, and respects Reilly, his nemesis and more than his equal. Reilly wants to overthrow Lenin and place himself in Lenin’s station. He almost succeeds.

Norman Rodway and Peter Egan are both convincing as Reilly’s control officers in the British Secret Service. Spying is a atrocious business and we are never positive who will betray whom.

Women, particulary Reilly’s wives, played by Jeananne Crowley, wife #1, Celia Gregory, #2, and Laura Davenport, #3, play a supporting role to the ace of spies, but each wife figures prominently in the ongoing epic. All give effective performances.

2. A short biography of Sidney Reilly is presented as the final presentation on Disc #4. It is apparent that the producers have stayed fairly end to historical fact. Even without the history lesson the epic stands on its absorb merits and is totally intelligent and genuinely lively. I planned to recognize two episodes at a time, but often found myself playing a third episode to rep out what would happen next, and then watching the scenes from the next installment to wet my appetite for the next display. The only films I have seen that compare favorably with The Ace of Spies are Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Scrutinize and Smiley’s People. I must admit that Alec Guiness, as George Smiley, is a better actor than Sam Neil, but I contemplate the Ace of Spies series is at least as satisfactory as the Smiley stories, with the added serve of mighty more history delivered in the Ace series. Reilly – Ace of Spies is a grand tale from beginning to slay.

3. The production values of this series are top-notch. It feels like we have been transported in time to the first 25 years of the 20th Century. From the offices of the Secret Service in London, to Port Arthur on the Russian Pacific Cruise, to St. Petersburg, Moscow, Paris, etc., attention has been paid to the smallest detail. These films observe and feel like a colossal budget production.

4. The only negative reviews of Ace of Spies on Amazon picture to the DVD transfer, which was unbiased safe enough not to spoil the indicate for me. Unless the viewer is especially particular about the quality of DVD transfer, I recommend Reilly – Ace of Spies heartily. This is high quality entertainment from beginning to destroy.

I watched this explain from the very first episode because its premise caught my attention and was pleasantly surprised by fair how beneficial it turned out to be. The two actors who play the Winchester brothers play very well off of one another and have tall chemistry. Jensen Ackles, who plays the older brother is really the atomize out star of this indicate as his performances are outstanding. On the surface he appears to be limited more than the shimmering ass enormous brother who simply wants to hunt down and slay any supernatural creature he possibly can. By the waste of this first season, I was completely enthralled by the storylines and looked forward to the exhibit every week. The action only gets better and better until the season finale that leaves you wondering, what are the Winchesters going to do next and how will they possibly top this in season 2?

Supernatural is a expansive note that breaks the mold of it’s WB predecessors. Unlike Buffy and Charmed, it strives to be edgier and less kitschy. Even the music has more bite. I really like the relationship between Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) and his younger brother, Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) . They are brothers who grew up fighting supernatural creatures with their father, John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) . Their mother was killed when Sam was a baby and their father has been obsessed with finding her killer ever since. Now 22 years later, Sam’s girlfriend, Jessica, is killed in the same plan and coincidentally their father disappears. Sam joins up with his brother, Dean, to not only glean their father, but track down the killer once and for all.

The brothers disappear across the US in Dean’s ‘67 Chevy Impala searching for their father, and helping strangers along the contrivance. Dean is obsessed with helping people. He feels strongly that what they are doing is their calling. Sam on the other hand wants a normal life and plans to return to it as soon as it is all over.

The chemistry between Dean and Sam is colossal. I especially care for the episodes their father is in. One of my popular episodes is Home. I also adore Phantom Traveler (Dean’s awe of flying is hilarious) .

I always loved how Buffy was amusing with the mammoth banter between the characters. If I could pick up a fault with Buffy it was that it wasn’t scary enough. I don’t have that jam with Supernatural. It has a substantial blend of the hair raising, spine-tingling moments and the brother’s wise-cracking wit.

I saw the cast and crew at the MT&R Television Festival assist in March and they are unbiased as charismatic in person as on film. I hope this explain continues to do well. After the cliffhanger we were left with from the first season, it will be a long summer until we seek what happens next with the Winchester clan.

With all of the above in mind, we might be tempted to minimize the significance of the bloodshed that occurred during the Reconstruction era and the entire century of strife that followed the war; Aftershock, however, does an outstanding job of illustrating the broken-down. This film tells the stories of a variety of individuals and organizations, including the Arkansas National Guard; ex-Confederate soldiers; status officials; African American troops; displaced Southern civilians; and one of our nation’s oldest homegrown terrorist groups, the Ku Klux Klan. It also devotes a few (though far from enough) moments to the often overlooked role of Native Americans in the post-war years. It even touches on the frustration that some government officials felt with Andrew Johnson’s calamitous advance to the nation’s troubles.

This is one of the few documentaries on the years immediately following the war that I would believe incorporating into a larger class project.

This DVD from the history channel is well done. It highlights some of the outstanding events of reconstruction after the Civil War including the founding of the KKK. It makes the point grahphically that while the North won the Civil War, the South won the period of Reconstruction. It is primary to understand this period of time in order to understand subsequent American History.

Well, I have to disagree with those who don’t like this film. I read the book and I saw the film and the film is actually easier to grasp in some ways than the book. Both are attractive grim, there’s no getting around that. Frank McCourt’s childhood was a difficult affair.

The film and the book are works of art. The job of the artist is to shake us up, to beget us gaze what we did not contemplate before. The Ireland that Frank McCourt experienced was abominable, dirty, downtrodden and very Catholic. Although I am not Irish, I grew up Catholic, and his depiction of the RC clergy was right-on. I can remember at the age of eight having a nun yowl so hard she grew red in the face. I was haunted.

Well, read “Irish Immigrants and Exiles” if you deem Mr. McCourt is exaggerating.

The film faithfully follows the book and I idea the film was more “hopeful” than the book. The child actors who play Frank at three different ages are astounding. Mr. Mccourt said that he belief the film was a fantastic film that exactly captured his family. Guess we have to trust his judgement.

Whether you want to be subjected to this misery is another matter. The legend reminds me of the films Carlo Ponti made about Italy after the War. Dirty, hungry children and pregnant 15-year olds. There are plenty of places serene like that in the world, if only we can bring ourselves to observe at them.

Like so many millions of people I adored the original of Angela’s Ashes with a passion and was terrified to hear that a film version had been made. My doubts were slightly dispersed when I read that the direction had fallen upon Alan Parker, who is a favourite, but composed some doubts remained. Let me status categorically that it is a righteous film from every possible perspective, except for the screenplay. It is not that the screenplay is poor, it’s honest impossible to condense the unusual. It is hard to stammer, but I deem that anybody who has not read the current, might have problems following the memoir and definitely will not earn the indepth references.

Parker has done a fine job with the direction and the fact that the cinematography did not at least garner an Oscar nomination is a crime (and a comment) . The film is shot in sepia-coloured repressiveness and the exercise of colour is extraordinary. Rob, for example, the red coat Angela wears, which jumps out of the cloak.

The acting from Carlyle as Malachy and Watson as Angela is likewise of the highest possible calibre, although the three boys playing Frank take the display, which is as it should be. Carlyle does a particularly obliging job of making the boys’ continued devotion to their father believable, when his character could so easily have become an arch villian. Watson’s Angela is understated as it is in the novel: she is the life force as well as the life-draining force of the drama. An edifying performance from a most gifted actress.

The final word, though, has to go to the “feel” of the film, which I felt to be spot-on with the modern. Comedy and tragedy are blended to perfection and sobs of tears and laughter were almost perfectly matched in experiencing it. That is what the film is: an experience, not objective a film. Obviously it can never be the fresh, but as Frank McCourt gave his personal seal of approval I search for no reason why anybody else would not.

Okay, Kurumi is THE best anime. And Encore honest makes it all better. Lots of laughs, especially the first episode where Saki becomes a movie star. And, if fans can enjoy it’s possible, Kurumi redefines the meaning of stupidity once again for all our enjoyment. I must say though it’s amusing because I maintain the creators were making up for the nudity quota in the 1st 4 discs all in this one, the bathhouse scenes with Saki and Kurumi are aesthetic humorous. All in all unbelievable and chubby of laughs, as they say, “a must for all Kurumi fans!” Plus there’s a preview of Kurumi 2, I deem it’s the opening theme, and the allotment with Kurumi transforming is hilarious. So please, assume Encore, you’ll appreciate it!!!

I really liked these four episodes, but I personally contemplate Karinka got a miniature soft in these episodes. The first one is when Saki becomes a movie star. In the second one, Karinka get’s a admire letter (awwwwwww!), third one Karumi becomes a women (haha!), and the last one is when a whole group of angels wants to fight Karumi for a kiss from Nakahito! The last one is my personal popular. Ample DVD. I recommend it.

More GR eps restored and on DVD!

When I saw that the ep Psychocrypt was going to be on this volume, I was jumping for joy. Psychocrypt, one of the more pivotal episodes of the series, was never released on commercial VHS. (Let me utter you – this was one of *the* most sought after eps for the fan trading – everyone wanted to know who had this ep and did they have *hopefully* a well-organized copy in stereo? )

It goes to indicate how strongly Zach loves his wife and how the Queen of the Crown played on that worship with Eliza’s crystal. You also notice how considerable of a lawful b*$%# the Queen of the Crown is. Very well written ep and definitely not your aveage kiddy reveal!!

Rainmaker – agreeable myth, more hints about how Goose gets really inflamed when Niko gets wound. *g* (Yes, I’m an admitted G/N’er! :-p), and wow…. the trick Niko pulls out of her hat in order to do Sheriff Ladd’s daughter, Amy…. (Oh yes, worthy homage in the name, Sheriff Ladd there…. :-p) I don’t remember – is this the first time the team had pulled their talents together for something like that?

That is one of the things that has always impressed me over the years about GR – they didn’t really have your typical “Kids don’t remember yarn lines…” writing, and the characters were really believable. I gotta hand it to Sir Robert – he knew what he was doing when he assembled the writing staff! Thanks to Christopher Rowley, Brian Dayley, and Dan Fiorella (unbiased to name the few that pop up honest off hand!) for making this explain stand the test of time.

I can’t wait for the next two volumes to be released!

Why does this deserve a five? It hasn’t primitive well at all. The animation is clunky, the assure “acting” is questionable and many of the area lines are hokey. But it is sensational. Why? The characters are easy to admire and acquire unhurried, the music is awesome and the whole premise is absorbing. This disc contains the pilot and first episode of the series. The theme song plays over the extended “begin” scene where the rangers enter the elevator, activate or recharge their powers, board the tram and finally open their station craft. A astronomical lead in that is eventually shortened in later episodes (reflect Voltron, G-Force, Power Rangers, etc originate sequences) . Rainmaker has a bit of a hokey situation in the midst of the futuristic science fiction in the rest of the series, but it is light hearted and fun and contains an recent song that is very catchy. I wish they would do a live action movie of this.

Having followed the shining build movement since its inception, most of the material in this video was not unusual to me. However, the depictions are well-behaved and really awe-inspiring–especially those in the last one third of the video. When you leer a computer simulation of specified complexity at the molecular level, it sticks in your consciousness. Sheer tiring, luck could not have done this.

I have seen this presentation three times. Each time I am impressed with the comments of the experts and the care in which the interesting material is presented. The subject is approached in a smooth and scientific manner. The audio clips are long enough to account for tough concepts. Especially telling is the interview with Dr. Dean Kenyon, a pretigious scientist and author who eventually gave up on chance and necessity as the parents of human life–and this after defending it in a well-received volume called “Biochemical Predestination.” He marvels at the nature of life and argues that a mindless universe could not have generated it.

The Secret is one of the best produced and edited DVDs of its kind that I have ever seen. And the line-up of teachers and presenters is sterling. There is only one reason I give this DVD four stars instead of five. The Secret is about the Law of Attraction, and how we can exhaust that Law to “attract” into our lives anything we want. But it spends 95% of the time talking only about being focused on what you want (rather than what you don’t want), and generating obvious feelings about that. It only spends 5% of the time making it definite that what we really attract into our lives is the people, circumstances, and opportunities that lead us to what we want. In other words, when we exhaust the principles mentioned in The Secret, doors commence. But we have to watch those doors for what they are and go through them. And that involves action. Many people who gawk The Secret straggle away with the impression that visualization and determined feelings is all it takes. It isn’t. You composed have to do something. As long as you support that in mind, The Secret contains information that can be life altering. Be Pleased!

With all the hype about The Secret, I was keen to get out what everyone was talking about. I bought both the DVD and the CD spot and watched with sizable anticipation.

Perhaps because I have studied and utilized for over 2 decades some of the most worthy mindset tools, processes and technologies for creating what you want, my expectations may have been skewed compared to those who have never heard of or applied such concepts as the law of attraction.

That is not to say the DVD/CD does not have value. I am clear there are people whose lives have been changed by it. I judge they did an outstanding marketing job. An outstanding “packaging” job in creating The Secret. The attraction principles do work, and they provided a huge introduction to those who have not been exposed to them before.

For me personally, my first disappointment was the fact that what was dramatically (and cleverly) built up as “a secret” – which to me something you know that I don’t – was hardly a secret. These principles have been around for centuries, have been mainstream for decades, with thousands of books, seminars, etc. covering the same principles. I don’t luxuriate in books, tapes, etc. that overpromise and under sigh. So, to me, hardly a secret.

My second disappointment was the lack of depth around the subject matter. If you want more in-dpeth and leading edge info about how our thoughts perform our reality, invest in the DVD “What the Bleep? ” It offers bright leading edge quantum physics principles, along with colossal animation explaining in simple layman terms, why and how we obtain our realities. In fact, some of the scientists on The Secret *first* appeared in “What the Bleep? ” I almost felt when I was watching The Secret, that they copied “What the Bleep? ” in many respects, although at a more superficial level.

My third disappointment/concern is how some Secret followers will account for the messagge in the movie. Again my perspective may be slightly skewed because I trained in and work with NLP (Neurolinguistic Programmming) which works drectly with the subconscious mind for helping people design accelerated breakthroughs in their lives. The suggestions, recommmended processes, etc. in The Secret work primarily with the conscious mind. Yet it is our subconscious mind that drives 80% of our behaviors and outcomes in life.

Yes, if you practice their recommendations for months and months, the suggestions may eventually sink into our subconscious. However there are simpler, quicker ways to compose what you want. The other share of that, because the subconscious mind does drive our results, there are many blocks — such as “secondary gains” for staying stuck, values conflicts, dinky beliefs, etc. – below our conscious awareness that stops us from having what we want. Because the movie does not address the incompatibility between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind, and treats the whole topic superficially as why some people manifest and some don’t, it creates the illusion that as long as you practice their suggestions, you will change your life. There is so mighty more than what is presented as to what are the differences that fabricate the disagreement to creating what you want.

While I am pleased that so many people are becoming more aware of these principles, I am concerned about the fallout as well. I am hearing people do potentially deplorable things like go into deeper debt, making dramatic life changes with blind faith, because the DVD tells them they can have what they want if they fair have, etc.

I would suggest if you acquire the DVD to consume a few things that most resonated with you, and apply them to your life, as long as you don’t sacrifice or overhaul other areas of your life without looking at the gigantic narrate. Sort out the glitz from the message. Also check what is not apt for you and let go of it.

I would recommend the movie “what the bleep? ” It goes hand in hand with The Secret, although more in depth and was the unusual movie that brought these concepts mainstream.

Third, I recommend that you check out book on NLP (as well as hypnosis which is a sister discipline) . Out of all the mindset tools and technologies I have venerable in over 20 years, I have found they are by far the most considerable. One of the best “beginner” books is: “NLP: The Current Technology of Achievement”.
