Guillermo Del Toro has become the fresh master of dim fantasy — first with the quirky clockpunk “Hellboy,” then with the Oscar-winning “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Not to mention forthcoming travels to Middle-Earth.

So you know he has the skills to pit Mike Mignola’s scarlet anti-hero against an army of fairies and elves, and not acquire it droll. Instead, it’s a spectacular sunless fantasy rotund of humor, action, quirky appeal, romance, and some truly wonderful special effects. But what really shoves this movie over the top is Del Toro’s gleaming direction, and the pleasing performance by Ron Perlman.

Decades ago, Professor Broom (William Injure) told a petite Hellboy a yuletide bedtime narrative about the Elf King Balor and his unstoppable Golden Army, and how the crown that controls the Army was split into thirds and divided among fairies and humans.

Well, you can’t really demand that kind of power to never be revived.

Cut to novel day. Hellboy (Perlman), Liz (Selma Blair) and Abe (Doug Jones) investigate a irregular supernatural attack on an auction house, where the archeological curiosity known as the Crown of Bethmoora was being sold — only to be attacked by savage tooth fairies. Turns out the crown was stolen by Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), a resentful young elf who is definite to acquire the world help from humanity — using, of course, the Golden Army.

And while Hellboy chafes against strict original commander Johann Krauss (a suit filled with ectoplasm), Abe encounters Nuada’s sister, Princess Nuala — who also happens to have the last third of the crown. But Nuada will not allow anyone to oppose him as he searches for the Golden Army’s spot, and Hellboy and his friends must venture into a unfamiliar, old kingdom to close him from destroying all of humanity.

The worst you can say about “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is that it sticks to the formula of the demonic outsider with a gloomy destiny, and his continuing romantic woes. There’s some retreading as Hellboy realizes anew that he’ll never fit into the world of humans, because he’s tall and red and has horns and a tail. Okay, we got it. Next stout psychological inform!

Fortunately those flaws are relatively minor ones. Del Toro is aloof able to move a gloomy, hooked anecdote with some truly bizarre creatures (the utterly alien, eye-winged Angel of Death), clockpunk robots, trippy underground goblin markets and a unique BPRD agent who is basically ectoplasm in a suit. And for the action scenes, Del Toro does not pull punches when it comes to the smashing action scenes — giant thrashing vines and a one-on-one duel with Nuada are among the highlights.

With all this going on, it would be easy to neglect the characters. But Del Toro packs the script with solid hastily dialogue and some poignantly romantic moments — including some graceful startling actions from dear ol’ Abe. And he also adds slight moments to this record legend that remind us that these are supposed to be people — such as Hellboy’s bickering with Krauss, or Abe and Hellboy getting drunk and having a runt Manilow singalong together. It’s unprejudiced so cute.

But what really sets this movie apart is the “children of the Earth.” No flitting Victorian sprites — these are creatures that are outlandish, grotesque, risky and immensely remarkable, from cross puny tooth fairies up to sizable rock monsters and plant gods. There’s an alien, bizarre handsome to these creatures that feels wholly true, as if Neil Gaiman casually dropped a few sketches onto the drawing board.

But as unbelievable as the visuals are, Del Toro never neglects the characters. Perlman is perfect for the role of “tremendous Red” — he’s gruff, sarcastic, short-tempered, but also endearing and self-deprecatingly likable. There are more hints of his potentially shaded future, and he faces some delicately-handed temptations. But Tall Red’s reliable heart is aloof very grand in the forefront, no matter how great human beings fright him.

Blair gives a more attractive performance here as a spunkier Liz, who also has some surprising developments in store. Jones is pitch-perfect as the fish-man, who experiences the first pangs of young appreciate for Nuala, while Goss gives a chilling, whispery performance as a rebel prince who is willing to do whatever it takes — even ruin family — if it helps him restore the fey kingdom. Glowing proper villain, since he clearly isn’t trying to be unpleasant.

There’s also loads of extras in this particular edition of the movie — feature commentary with director Guillermo Del Toro, Jeffrey Tambor, Selma Blair and Luke Goss, as well as some deleted scenes also with commentary with Del Toro, a prologue to the movie, a digital script, image gallery, a “Puppet Theatre” for the opening sequences of the film, plan art, interviews, and other such stuff. Also making-of documentaries — seven mini-documentaries that visit the situation, the “Troll Market Tour” in the movie’s most memorable “faerie” setting, and the two-hour “Hellboy: In Service Of The Demon.” Basically, it turns the film inside-out and lets you seek information from its guts.

“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is a wild, darkly ornate straggle through the world of half-forgotten gods and fey. While it has a few flaws, those are far outweighed by the lustrous of Del Toro’s vision.

You know you’re not watching a formulaic silly book film when one of the highlights is a drunken rendition of “Can’t Smile Without You” by Hellboy and Abe Sapien. “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is a more confident, assured outing than the first film and while it does not procedure from Mignola’s comics for its area it is perhaps better off for it, lacking the usual burden of comparison and expectations. “The Golden Army” is more fantastical than the first film and is less sci-fi oriented but this is the sort of thing Del Toro does exceptionally well as a writer. He never lets the fantasy become the focus of the film, instead concentrating on characters and delivering action scenes that can only be described as, forgive the crass immaturity, kickass.

As spellbinding as many humorous book-to-film adaptations are it is a rare event when one can call one of these films a proper artistic achievement. I am convinced without a shadow of a doubt that Guillermo Del Toro’s entire career has been leading up to this film, particularly regarding his work as screenwriter here. The comedy feels less forced and is worked incredibly well into the script here, so mighty so that it doesn’t feel remotely unnatural when the scene of humorous drunken singing leads directly without a wreck into one of the film’s most intensely dramatic sequences. Del Toro’s handling of character has never been better, not even with “The Devil’s Backbone”, which is unexcited my well-liked of his films, and his sheer skill and ability when it comes to telling a fairytale-esquire fantasy is fantastic, as proved in the prologue to this film. In short this is Del Toro at the top of his game and providing artistry the likes of which we rarely if ever recognize in summer blockbusters. It’s only stunning that an astonishingly shiny comical like “Hellboy” by an astonishingly smart artist like Mike Mignola is adapted this well and by someone as talented at what they do as he is.

How refreshing it is, a week after the release of “Hancock”, which to me epitomizes everything cross with action film-making today, that we come by “The Golden Army” which features hands down some of the finest action scenes we have ever seen in this sort of film. Unbiased stunningly ravishing, well-shot, well-crafted, the sort of thing that leaves one wondering how great time and pain went into it and endlessly thankful that some really talented people went to the distress of making the film.

The film is generally impartial obedient on a technical level. Why am I even saying this? Of course it is. Danny Elfman composing, Guillermo Navarro serving as cinematographer, great editors, improbable special effects wizards. It’s a world-class crew that made this film. I shouldn’t be surprised at its quality but “The Golden Army” really objective floored and astonished me with how obedient it is. The cast is also expedient, proving once again that you don’t need ‘big names’ to carry a movie. Unprejudiced about everyone here is reliable, particularly Perlman with another expedient turn as Hellboy and the underrated Selma Blair as Liz Sherman.

“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” provides essentially everything a Del Toro or Mignola fan would want. I imagine it will entertain and charm many outside those circles as well with its incredible action sequences, intelligent characters, and astounding sense of humor. I would personally go as far as calling “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” one of the top five or so laughable book movies ever made.

In the final release of Warner’s Batman the Engaging series we come by another 28 episdoes of one of the finest titillating shows ever created. I would heartily disagree with John Q. Public’s concept of Anime-style animation and musty shriek acting. Suitable the animation was done by Studio Junio and has some Anime influence I would not contemplate this Anime style at all. John Q. evidently has never seen proper Anime before or such a ridiculous statement would never have been made.

Batman was honest a large series and far worthy to the Batman Beyond and the Unusual Batman series. This is the tough, gritty Batman of Bob Kane although updated for current times but tranquil spacious to watch at for its art-deco stylings. My common episodes on this collection include:

“The Demon’s Quest parts 1 & 2″ Batman must agree to an uneasy alliance with arch-villian Ras Ah Ghul when his daughter Talia and Robin have been kidnapped under similar circumstances.

“Sideshow” Killer Croc escapes on the scheme to a prison and takes refuge with a circus band of sideshow freaks who wait on Croc when Batman comes to rep him.

“The Trial” Batman is engage and taken to Arkham Asylum where he is effect on trial by most of his arch-foes including The Joker, Twoface, and Poison Ivy.

“Bane” Batman meets Bane, the chemically enhanced killer who would rupture Batman’s serve in the funny book continutiy.

“Harley’s Holiday” harley Quinn is released from Arkham and wants to go straight but ends up stealing Bruce Wayne’s car resulting in a wild run through Gotham.

“Deep Freeze” mr. Freeze escapes from Arkham with the befriend from an faded billionaire, intent on bringing about a second ice age in the world.

“Showdown” featuring Ras Ah Ghul and a legend of this past where he encounterd the legendary Jonah Hex.

One mark is that the series technically changed to the Adventures of Batman & Robin during the last season. No grand deal. I wish there would have been a few more extra but this is unruffled a must-have place for Batman fans.

I absolutely savor this series!

For those of you who don’t know Ghost Stories was originally realesed in Japan a few years ago as essentially a cramped kids reveal. It’s kinda like “Scooby Doo” or something, you now the senario, miniature kids fight ghosts, blah blah blah, clich’e, clich’e, it’s all been done before. However when the present was brought to America a couple of changes were made. Basically the people at ADV films saw it fitting to change the script entirely build it’s unique version. Basically the story’s are the same it’s fair the dialogue centered around the memoir that’s altered. And maintain me it was a beneficial opinion, because “Ghost Stories” is probably the funniest anime Ive ever seen.

For those of you who have bought the first volume of Ghost Stories and understanding that was silly, wait till you contemplate this. Ghost Stories, without a doubt, will definitely be one of those series that impartial keeps on getting funnier and funnier as it progresses with each volume. Heres a review of each episode:

Episode five: Episode five was tremendous. It was mainly about Keichero(I cant spell his name), competing in the school sports vestival. But of course theres an aroused ghost on the loose who apparently likes to regain the feet of the runner running in lane four, which spells difficulty for the gang. This episode was truely comic. The line about the cripps stealing Kechero’s shoes was hysterical. I don’t know why but it’s always really laughable when exiguous kids say things they really arn’t supposed to say, it unprejudiced is. As usual the humor was very Topical here, and objective about all of it hits the effect, Ghost Stories has a nack for that. I have to say though one thing about GS is the fact that you really cant view the point to with a very miniature knowledge of pop culture. Becuase you probably won’t accumulate most of the jokes, but if you understood them all in volume one, then go for volume two.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ghost Stories, Vol. 2: Semester 2 – Sophomore Scares! Click Here

Grade: A

Episode six: This was probably my well-liked episode on the disc. It’s about a ghost called Babasara who likes to attack children while there home all alone at night. And of Course our five main characters impartial happen to be all alone, and while Kechero, Leo, and Hajime have “Guy’s Night,” Satsuki and Momoko have girls night. And that alone unbiased creates all sorts of crazy Hyjinks for our characters. I have to say that even though Momoko is essentially a one joke character, she consistantly stays amusing the entire series, unbiased about everything she says is a stitch. And it shows here.

Grade: A+

Episode 7: I like epispde seven, it was really comical, nothing more to say.

Grade: A

Episode 8: Another grand episode. Impartial tedious outmoded Ghost Stories fun.

Grade: A

As you can protest I thoughroughly enjoyed this disc, it was sharper, funnier and crazier than volume one, which is graceful with me. Don’t miss this title.

Age recomendation:

Japanese version: The japanese version, as far as im concerned unprejudiced about anybody can leer. There are some composed scares here and there along with a couple of PG reated potty and panty jokes, id say it would be graceful for agaes 8 and up.

English Version: The english version on the oter hand dosn’t catch off as easily as that. I must say as GS presses on to it’s second volume it definitely begins to become more and more offensive. It basically makes fun of almost everybody and there are quite a few sex jokes, and, I mean, there not horribly bad offensive or anything, but there aesthetic heavy at times. Lets set aside it this arrangement, if the reveal was on Adult Swim it would probably be TV 14, a strong TV-14. But one must designate that the humor here is only verbal, theres no nudity or anything physical in it. I would give it a 14 and up.

I was very joyful with the second volume of this anime. First, it is down suitable droll. Many times, you objective don’t pick up the jokes in an anime or they are really stupid. This is not upright of this anime. The jokes are very contempary.

Secondly, the epic stats strong and they stick to the set. I can’t inform for the Japanese version but the American version, the position is solid.

Thirdly, if you are a fan of the anime series “Chrono Crussade”, you will be cheerful to know, two of the tell acotrs from Chrono Crussade” are in “Ghost Stories” which are Hilary Hoag(Sister Rosette) and Greg Ayers(Chrono) . It is very easy to identify which character’s voices they are.

Another reason I like this anime is because of the extras on the disc. If you go to the extras and clikc the ghost profiles, they give you a summary of the ghosts they expend in the anime. These ghosts are noted ghost stoires and legends in Japan. I particullarly like it because I like learning about different ghost sotires from different places. I also like that the characters are becoming more developed through storyline. If you like the first volume of Ghost Stories, lift up the second volume. You won’t be disappointed.

“24:Redemption”, two-hours long TV movie that premiered last night, is a “bridge” connecting the last season that ended 18 months ago and the original one which we, the fans of the reveal have been waiting impatiently and which is scheduled to begin in January 2009. The film takes position in dependable time format, impartial like all episodes do. After watching it, I am exasperated about upcoming season and I hope that 24 – Season 7 will be more like season 1 than season 6. Judging by the movie, “24: Redemption”, there are many reasons for hope. The film is thrilling, absorbing, it uses every one of its minutes effectively, and it is distinguished more plausible with its space and Jack’s relations and intentions. It was a profitable understanding to rob Jack out of LA and station him in one of hot places on the planet, Sangala, the fictional country in Africa, with very valid problems that notice too familiar. Jack is assist, and he is in tremendous shape, unruffled invincible, resourceful, the man of action who would not lose ability to consider clearly and to construct the proper decision even when being brutally tortured. I am truly sorry that we may not leer Robert Carlyle again – the chemistry between him and Sutherland was very dependable, and their last scene together moved me like not many scenes during all seasons did. But who knows, nothing is what it seems when it comes to 24. Jon Voight’s presence promises a creepy risky villain, and if the writers of the series preserve up with what they did for the movie, we are in for thrilling, captivating, unforgettable 24 hours from the life of one very special Federal Agent, Jack Bauer.

Let me launch by saying that I worship “24.” I worship each season for its acquire particular strengths. I even loved Season 6, with all of its flaws. But as for “24: Redemption,” I can only say that it’s…OK. Granted, the producers had a blooming stout hurdle to overcome from the outset, with 18 months of anticipation having built up. But the movie was operating under so many constraints that it never developed any of the depth that makes the series more than unbiased an action expose. It was as if the producers were expecting us to be so wowed by the exotic African and DC locations that we wouldn’t witness that the anecdote was passe. Having Jack trying to rescue a group of dreadful, oppressed African children was not only stereotypical, but it tried to play on the sympathies of the audience in the most blatant manner imaginable. Having the child soldier pointing a rifle at Jack while repeating “Demolish the cockaroach” over and over, before running away in apprehension at the supposed power of Jack’s words, gets my vote as probably the worst moment ever in any episode of “24.” And, of course, they managed to cram in the obligatory torture scene from which Jack immediately recovers without missing a beat. I judge the main predicament was that they tried to give us two storylines in only two hours. They usually have 24 hours in which to make a memoir. As a result, neither plot-line really ever went any spot inspiring. If the makers of “24″ ever return to their view of making a “24″ feature film, they really need to learn some lessons from this experiment, because for me it proved that “24″ can’t work in a two-hour format without some serious overhaul. After all, everyone knows that Jack and company (except for those who regain offed) are eventually going to conclude the terrorists, before the season even starts. It’s the limited moments that earn “24″ enormous for me. I fancy it when Mandy the assassin is reduced to tears by the death of her girlfriend, while she stands in the crosshairs, in the first season. I fancy the conversation that Senator Palmer has with the two vandals who demolish his windows in Season 1. I worship Palmer’s impeachment in season 2, and the pained perceive on Mike Novick’s face throughout. I worship the final moments between Jack and Chappelle in season three. I adore Michelle’s farewell to Gael, also in season three (probably my approved season) . I savor it when Jack robs the convenience store in season four. I admire the stare on Lynn McGill’s face as he helplessly watches a fellow CTU agent die, in season five. And I savor it when Assad says “You’ve taken the inferior path, Shaheed” as he kills the friend who betrayed him in season six. These are the kinds of moments you lose when you have to strip everything down to two hours, and for me, “Redemption” showed that the action and intrigue alone aren’t enough to obtain it stand out from the plethora of similar shows and movies. I’ll leave my critique at that. I’m clear that other diehard “24″ fans will waste up buying the DVD, anyway, but for those who are novel to “24,” I’ll unbiased say that this is not the best starting point. Stick to the series. And I hope that Season 7 ends up being grand better than this.

There’s nothing too complicated about the situation. A rich American businessman played by Jack Lemmon has to form a sudden fling to Italy to claim the body of his father who was killed in an auto accident. He meets a young English woman, played by Juliet Mills, who has advance to Italy to claim the body of her mother who, it turns out, died with Lemmon’s father. It seems that these two were in the midst of their annual month long tryst. For many years they had been meeting at exactly the same date at exactly the same Italian resort for what was obviously their raison d’etre.

Strait-laced Lemmon is frightened that his father could possibly behave in such a manner. Life loving Mills is thrilled that her mother had found care for and happiness. The rest of the station consists of the complications of dealing with Italian bureaucracy and the evolution of Lemmon’s character from chilly efficient American businessman to a warm loving human being. Mills has “unprejudiced a bit” to do with these changes in Lemmon.

There was a running gag throughout the movie that exactly reflected my believe experiences in Italy. The morgue was closed until 4:00 because it was lunch time. There were no taxis because it was lunch time. A helicopter was told not to land at a local airport because it was lunch time. In my have experience, when attempting to cash some travelers’ checks in Rome, I was made to wait at a bank window for over 30 minutes while the cashier finished his sandwich and looked at a newspaper. No, no other window cashed travelers’ checks and yes, he’d pick care of me when he was ready, but he wasn’t ready yet. I reflect that the feeling of “been there, done that” really added to my enjoyment of AVANTI, and the jokes built around the Italian inefficiencies did a lot to effect the atmosphere of the whole movie.

You don’t have to have been there, however, to be pleased this movie. It’s warm and amusing on its occupy. Lemmon and Mills seem destined for one another, and the hotel manager, played by Clive Revill, who is obviously in like with fancy, adds another dimension of humor. No tall drama, but loving good-natured comedy is what you can inquire of from AVANTI.

Accidently caught this gradual night movie while channel surfing in a hotel room on a freezing London night far from home and nursing a frigid.I was enchanted as I’d never heard of it.Jack Lemmon as Wendell Armbruster and Juliet Mills as Pamela Pigott give convincing portrayals of a millionaire american and a working class englishwoman reach to Italy to retrieve the bodies of his father and her mother, who unknown to their families had been lovers for years and had died tragically together in a car accident.Jack Lemmon displays his acumen for comedy without even trying and miss Mills gives an understated performance. But kudos must go to the person who cast Clive Reville in the fraction of Carlucci the indispensible hotel manager. When he blurts out ‘idiota’ to an incompetent underling in absolute frustration its an absolute delight. It was a while before I realized he wasnt neapolitan. What a pity his talents have not been more recognized.I would also commend the melodic theme music arranged by Mr Rustichelli. The ending was not a complete surprise but fitting all the same. Please rent this one out all you romance lovers, you will not be disappointed, …as for my frigid,lo and view the next morning it was gone!,silly that…

The title tells the truth. Even by 1930’s golden age of Hollywood standards, these five movies are literary masterpieces and proper film classics. I remember all five fondly as a teenager in the unhurried 1960’s and early 1970’s in long-gone San Francisco art theaters, and sever to threads on morning prize movie TV shows. It is an honor to notice them now in a comfortable bedroom, uncut and non-commercial. They are, of course, MGM studio print editions that in one instance, MARIE ANTOINETTE, even contains roadshow music and an intermission never seen on television.

TREASURE ISLAND (1934) stars Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper, was directed by Victor Fleming (CAPTAINS Heroic, GONE WITH THE WIND), and is based on a Robert Louis Stevenson current about pirates and buried worship. In exquisite B&W, it reunites Beery and Cooper from THE CHAMP (1931) and also features Lionel Barrymore and Lewis Stone. Near to believe about it, this is a reunion for half the cast of Immense HOTEL (1932) .

DAVID COPPERFIELD and A Anecdote OF TWO CITIES (both 1935) are towering masterpieces based on Charles Dickens novels; both are impeccably produced by David O. Selznick. Painstakingly faithful to very long books, they both have ravishing art direction and are cast to perfection down to the bit roles: W.C. Fields as Micawber, Freddie Bartholomew and Frank Lawton as David, Basil Rathbone as Mr. Murdstone, and Edna May Oliver as Aunt Betsey in DAVID; and Ronald Colman in maybe his greatest performance in Myth, which also features Oliver and Rathbone. At about 130 minutes each, they are long enough to do justice to the Dickens novels; I am distinct he would have loved both immensely.

MARIE ANTOINETTE (1938), presented in a never-seen 157 tiny roadshow edition, has an Oscar-nominated Norma Shearer in a unbelievable role. If someone wanted to know who Shearer was, I would expose this incredibly opulent and literate costume romance to them. It is the underrated masterpiece of this box area and also stars Tyrone Power and an Oscar-nominated Robert Morley as a terrified, child-like King Louis XVI. The shapely art direction and regal music were also Oscar-nominated. W.S. Van Dyke (THE THIN MAN, SAN FRANCISCO) directed.

Finally, we have a splendidly cast and written adaptation of Jane Austen’s PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1940), starring Greer Garson as Elizabeth Bennet and Laurence Oliver as Mr. Darcy. Aldous Huxley and Jane Murfin scripted this elegant and witty romantic comedy of manners that won an Oscar for B&W Interior Residence Decoration.

But you don’t honest collect five expansive movies in this Warner Home Video boxed site. Cherish ISLAND also comes with two shorts, a cartoon, and a theatrical trailer. DAVID COPPERFIELD has the well-behaved Technicolor short PIRATE PARTY AT CATALINA ISLE, along with a second Technicolor short, a cartoon, and a theatrical trailer. A Myth OF TWO CITIES has a memorable 60 slight Lux Radio Theater adaptation of Myth from 1942, starring Ronald Colman, along with two vintage cartoons and the theatrical trailer. MARIE ANTOINETTE has two shorts and a theatrical trailer, all tied in to the 1938 movie. And PRIDE AND PREJUDICE has an Oscar-nominated patriotic short on Navy training during World War Two, plus a color cartoon and theatrical trailer. It is one hell of a DVD boxed site, a labor of admire and an absolute must-see on a dull TV week.

We acquired this collection because we wanted to enjoy the 1935 version of A Fable of Two Cities. We unbiased watched it and had a improbable experience. The movie is very cessation to the place, the performances are safe. Charles Dickens’ book will forever be a testament to the struggle of humanity between the have and have nots.

The performance of Blanche Yurka, as Madame DeFarge is outstanding. The citizens of France, seeking to keep an ruin to the tyranny they experience from the oppressing aristrocracy, presents the never ending example that when rights are stepped on, it always ends in revolution and change. The Marquis St. Evremonde, played by Basil Rathbone, provides a belief to the apprehension it represents for anyone to reveal they do not care about those who suffer. Especially when it comes to children; for the anxiety committed against this family, sparks the fire that leads to events that establish an ruin to the ruling society.

Dr. Manette’s performance as the innocent man who was a prisoner at the Bastille for over 18 years is noble. His daughter, played by Elizabeth Allen, represents the person that inspires expansive care for in two men, one Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton, superbly played by Ronald Colman.

The character of Miss Pross, played by Edna May Oliver, is awesome. We go from disliking her, to admiring and then loving her for her sacrifice that saves the life of Ms. Manette. In the raze, the sacrifice made by Sydney for the like of Lucie is one of the most sensitive and touching of all esteem stories. He finds purpose for his life, shiny elephantine well that his actions shall forever live in the hearts of those he sacrifices for. Would highly recommend owning this DVD. The other movies shall be reviewed as we recognize them.

Although it is seldom seen today, in 1970 Constantin Costa-Gavras’ “Z” picked up both the Unique York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Describe and an Academy Award as Best Foreign Film. In the wake of the John and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King assassinations of the 1960s and fueled by the later Watergate scandal, the film had immense resonance with American audiences, becoming one of the highest grossing foreign language films ever released in that market.

Based on the new by Vassilis Vassilikos, which was itself based on the 1966 “Lambrakis Affair” in Greece, “Z” is at once a political thriller and satire. Location in an unnamed nation, it presents a politician who is strongly distinguished of American and Russian nuclear gain up and his nation’s participation in it. Denounced by the dwelling quo as a communist, he is met with civic obstruction when he arrives to give a speech and afterward is struck down and killed by a speeding truck in the streets. A drunk driving accident, according to local officials. An assassination, according to his entourage.

Although the film has a somewhat tiring, and dangerous produce, once fully underway it becomes a rapid-fire series of sharply edited scenes in which the sloppy assassination position is unraveled by a dispassionate magistrate sent to conduct an investigation–an investigation plagued by assaults on witnesses and civic cover-up. But in such a unfavorable society, can the corpulent truth ever be known?

Director Costa-Gavras walks a very comely line here, presenting the characters as archetypes but endowing them yet endowing with enough human emotion to bewitch our interests and sympathies. And the cast is grand, with Yves Montond, Irene Papas, and Jean-Louis Trintignant particularly vital. The script is at once chilling and covertly laughable, jeering at officialdom around the corners of its more serious business, and the overall survey of the film–particularly in the violent crowd scenes–is truly memorable.

The film has been restored to a pristine condition in its unique widescreen and the DVD offers a number of language subtitles (including English) in easy-to-read yellow script. Bonus features are petite, but include the new trailer, samples of restoration work, and an extremely gripping conversation between novelist Vassilikos and director Costa-Gavras. Consta-Gravas also offers an audio-commentary–in French, which will be frustrating for those who (like me) do not snarl the language.

Although some viewers may not even witness the satirical tone of the film, and while some will be set off by its distinctly liberal slant, I believe most viewers–including those who don’t normally care for foreign film–will gain “Z” a attractive sail, particularly if they enjoyed the likes of JFK or THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. Time may have dimmed the origins of the portion, but sadly the subject of governmental corruption and the mendacity of powerbrokers remains as timely as ever.

GFT, Amazon Reviewer

Z is a political thriller with few action scenes, none of the “thrills” associated with conevntional thrillers. The Execute takes station fairly early on,and it is clear who is respnosible. The thrill is in the dogged investigation by an incorruptible magistrate{interesting comparison to Stones’s JFK},which leads to the highest seats of government. Based on a terrific new by Vassilis Vassilikos{and an suitable screenplay by Jorge Semprun},this tells the memoir of the execute of the Greek parliamentarian and doctor Gregory Lambrakis. That it was a political assasination is clear, though the complicity is so multilayered that it appears that the truth will never approach out. Yves Montand is,as usual, righteous as Lambrakis [referred to as Z throughout the film.Z comes from the Greek verb zei, HE LIVES} Irene Pappas is his suffering wife{and widow}. Costa-Gavras travelled this territory often, {the Confession, Missing} though not with this brilliance. The editing is crsip, leading to the sense of breathlessness among the defendents. I will leave the ending to the viewer. This is probably the best political thriller that I have ever seen, and 31 years later,is till genuine,if not intellectual

This exhibit is so safe, I have watched the 1st season 10 times over. Workin on that with season 2. If you haven’t seen an episode of this reveal, you have to at least rent it. This demonstrate is a hit with my whole family over and over again.

MUST Possess!!!!

I have always loved Rodney Carrington. He makes me laugh so hard that I have to be careful or I will finish breathing. I don’t eat or drink while watching Rodney because I might laugh that hard. I have seen him live, heard him on the radio and steal his albums. He is the best. ABC really blew it by not promoting this display. THe first episode in which Rodney decides to support out by taking on some duties for the preacher is a side splitter. His mountainous relationship with his friend Barry and his family develop this a family pleasant display. It is like my family anyway. Rodney’s spontaneaous humor is not stifled by this explain. Mac Davis as his father in law and the rest of the cast are tremendous. I view several country stars in supporting roles in the first site and I know there are some in this also. I had been begging for this DVD status since Rodney went off the air. It is well worth it and shows those ABC execs did not know what is safe fun.
