This box actually holds nothing but a single button and a stranger lets them know that a simple press of that button promises to give its owner a million dollars. However, if this button is pressed, somebody in the world – another human being – will die. Norma and Arthur, who are strapped for money, only have 24 hours to keep this box and make their final decision – a morally startling predicament that will make them, and their viewers, face humanity’s true nature. Although set in Richmond, Virginia, the majority of the film was actually shot in Boston, Massachusetts and other localities near the vicinity, such as the campus of Milton Academy. A huge indoor set was also built inside a North Andover building to look like a NASA laboratory. The crew of production even travelled to NASA’s Research Center in Virginia to shoot several of the film’s scenes since Kelly’s father worked there in the 70s. A lot of extras were used in various scenes and most of the cars were from the 60s and 70s period, making the setting much more realistic as you watch The Box online.
Written and directed by Richard Kelly, most well-known for writing and directing equally mind-boggling Donnie Darko in 2001, this story line was taken from Richard Matheson’s short story “Button, Button”, which was also turned into an episode of Twilight Zone in 1986. It seems that Richard Kelly can’t make anymore good movies after “Donnie Darko”. The Box online movie review after its appearance at Sweden’s Fantastik Film Festival has proven that Kelly appears to be nothing but a fluke. With poor editing and a dull and predictable storyline, The Box movie review shows that it will go in and out of the theatres as quickly as ever. You might not even want to watch it on DVD.
The Box online movie review cannot really tell if Kelly just can’t tell good stories or if the concept of the movie was far too high for him to tackle or if his editors are just bad at what they do. Perhaps it is all three of those things combined.
What make The Box movie review tank even more is the bad performances by the actors. Cameron Diaz can’t speak with a Southern accent to save her life and thus relies on looking sad most of the time while acting with her eyebrows to avoid sounding too comical. James Marsden really doesn’t suit the role of a NASA scientist cum astronaut, either. Fortunately, Frank Langella is around to carry the film’s weight around. His frightening and menacing character is reminiscent to Freddy Krueger and can send chills up one’s spine.
Since this film is based on a story written by Richard Matheson, The Box online movie review shows that the film definitely isn’t the greatest version out there for the story. Although every piece exists to form a story that is compelling, Kelly doesn’t seem to bring them properly together.
However, Kelly cleverly chooses to look at the film’s concepts through the views of an existentialist play, making The Box online movie review better than it should be. There are a lot of other layers that bring the audience deeper into these existential themes, which make it hard to say that this movie is a complete waste. Thankfully, there are a lot of interesting points of discussion within The Box online movie review, making it much better compared to Kelly’s last movie.
