OhmyNews 2007 International Citizen Reporters’ Forum Recap

OhmyNews brought together leading thinkers and practitioners in the field of citizen journalism and user-created content during their 2007 International Citizen Reporters’ Forum. Panel participants have shown us ways to realize the vision of user empowerment without exploitation by designing fair and sustainable business models.

Distinguished guests and citizen reporters of OhmyNews examined the status of citizen journalism and user-created content and discussed ways to empower citizens on the Web and encourage their participation. There were a host of pressing issues tackled throughout the three-day forum: How can practitioners in citizen journalism balance user participation and editorial accountability? How can citizen journalism foster cross-cultural exchanges and contribute to the vision of a global village as envisioned by Marshall McLuhan? How can we sustain citizen journalism by identifying the right business models?

MediaChannel has put together the package below to highlight some of the issues discussed during the forum. Check them out and start reporting!

Participant Reaction and Recap

OhourNews
Can ordinary citizens actually function as journalists? Or, as many in the mainstream media would have it, is journalism some sort of priesthood of professionals who venture, Moses-like, to mountaintops and then return to deliver the news as divinely revealed truth to the rest of us earthbound mortals?

“Every Citizen is a Reporter”
The model presented by OhmyNews and many of these other ventures contrast with Daily Kos and much of the U.S. blogosphere in that they are focused on creating an alternative media, being the journalists that they wish they had in their countries.
